Bejaia city and harbor taken from Gouraya National Park after sunset. 20 sec. exposure f13 100ISO. After a 5 hour bus ride from Algiers, I took a taxi to the end of the road near the top of the mountain, the driver didn't want to wait, but he assured me that there would be plenty of taxis at the summit after sunset. An hour later I go to the taxi stand: no taxis, no cars, nobody. It's getting pitch dark and beginning to rain, so I resign myself to the fate of walking back the 8km (5 mile) or so windy road down to the city, I have an umbrella and a head lamp, but this is not a good situation to be in at all. 10 minutes down the road a car stops and offers me a ride, single driver in his 20's, I'm saying what the heck, I can whack him with the tripod if anything bad happens. I get in the car: it reeks of alcohol inside, and there's a glass of pastis on the coffee tray explaining that. The first thought is of course, "Oh shit!", buy nothing to fear, it was just a regular Kabylie citizen offering a ride back to the hotel (at no cost) to the only tourist in town, and the traffic once past the hairpin bends down the mountain is pure congestion, making a high speed collision impossible. He even let me drink the rest of the pastis. Alcohol is rare in Algeria, but not in Bejaia. I hope my mother doesn't read this story, she's been commenting on my photos the past few days.
