Want a fun math puzzle for kids? Make a set of pentomonoes! This pentomino math game is an awesome brain teaser for kids!
I finally broke down and ordered this book from Amazon last week, and it came in the mail today! It is Pentomino Puzzles: 365 Teasers to Keep Your Brain in Shape by Eric Harshbarger. I was surprised to find that it came with a set of pentominoes! I guess if you can read the little purple circle at the top of the book in the picture, then you would know that it "Includes a full set of 12 pentominoes." I figured I'd just use the book with the set I already own, but a new set is nice! The book contains 365 shape outlines. The challenge for each one is to place all 12 pentominoes so that they create that shape! Trust me, this is much harder than it looks! As I tried to solve some of these challenges, I thought to myself that it would be really nice to have a grid to work on. So I whipped one up in Photoshop. Each square of the grid is 5/8ths of an inch, so the pieces that come with the book fit the grid perfectly. You can download the grid by clicking on the photo above. Just watch that your printer doesn't resize the image. I make sure"Scale to fit media" is NOT checked when I print, to alleviate this problem. I even picked a challenge and drew it onto the paper. It certainly helped to be able to fit the pentominoes into a more visual grid. I do wish the pentominoes that came with the puzzle were marked by square...like these... Pentominoes are composed of 5 squares each. It's easier to visualize possible spots for the pieces when the squares are marked on them, as well as having a grid. But maybe that's cheating?! In any case, here's a picture of the train puzzle solved. It took 2 brains to solve this one, plus a hint or two from the answers. I thought this one would be easy as there are several spots where only one or two pieces could possibly fit. This was supposed to help whittle down the possibilities, but it didn't seem to help that much! But having a grid was definitely a bonus. Feel free to print as many of these as you like. I'm sure kids would appreciate having a grid to work with. Especially if you draw some challenges out for them too! This book would be great for older kids and adults. Younger kids would probably get way too frustrated with the challenges, but I'm sure they would enjoy building their own creations with them! You could also use the grids to copy down creations that your children have made. More information about Pentominoes can be found at Eric Harshbarger's website. While I was surfing the web for Pentomino information, I came across some really fun make-it-yourself versions. Check these out! I began using math stations today. One of my kids favorite stations was the area and perimeter station. I filled a black tub with one inch square tiles and pentominoes. Pentominoes have five squares hooked together on a flat plane in 12 different variations. Students can do so many activities with them in relation to shapes, rotations, reflections, translations, area, and perimeter. I created a set of pentominoes which you can download for free. Click here for your free download. Ideas for using the pentominoes includes: 1. finding the area and perimeter of each pentomino 2. using the pentominoes to cover a given shape (like a puzzle) 3. combine the pentominoes together to create a shape with a given area 4. combine the pentominoes together to create a shape with a given perimeter 5. using the pentominoes to cover a given shape and then find the area and perimeter Do you use pentominoes in your classroom? If so, do you have an idea you can share? I would love for you to leave a comment and let us know.
Key words: Math, Geometry, Transformations, Pentominoes Student pentomino sets help students deepen geometric understanding. In this activity students will practice transformations including slides (translations), flips (reflections), and turns (rotations). This set includes12 pages of pentominoes with 8 on each page. Each pentomino can be printed on its own sheet of color paper so that each is unique. With a pack of paper from Michaels, I made each of my students their own set. Included is an info sheet with the names of the shapes and the informal and formal names of transformations. There are also two pages of pentomino designs for students to explore. The pentominoes are standard 1 inch size and can be used with store bought pentomino pattern cards. A few days ago we did some learning station work in my regular math classes. We made three different learning stations and rotated them between the six table groups in my class. It certainly was much easier to do these learning stations this quarter because I have a student teacher. Two teachers are definitely better than one! My fifth hour class is my inclusion hour and there were three of us. The stations were pretty loud and sometimes chaotic with more than one group finishing different centers simultaneously, but the students were really engaged in their problem solving and most groups collaborated really well. Two of the learning stations were activities I found in the binder Tangrams and Pentominoes purchased many years ago from Nasco. I was shocked how many of my students had never used tangrams or pentominoes. In past years they were really familiar with tangrams and this year some students said, they had used them in previous years. No one knew what a pentomino was. The tangrams with the introductory tangram packet. Students working. This girl really wanted her hand in the photo! :) The pentomino station seemed to be a student favorite. They really enjoyed solving the pentomino puzzles. Several students asked to do the next pentomino packet after they finished the three learning stations. Pentominoes with the intro packet. Students really worked together on this and had fun. Many wanted to keep doing pentominoes. The final station was measuring the radius or diameter of cut out circles in either centimeters or inches. Then students needed to calculate the area and circumference of the circle. Our text teaches circumference and then area of circles separately and we definitely felt that this center really helped students to be able to keep the formulas for area and circumference straight. The special ed teacher who teaches with me cut out all these circles, bless her heart! I had the idea for the center, but no time to cut circles and she volunteered to do it. I was thrilled with how the station turned out. This is a complete station (we stored it in a large ziploc bag. They needed a full sized ruler for the large blue circle. Working on the station. Measuring and calculating. I made a chart on the SMARTBoard where we kept track of each group's progress on the stations. While a group was working we put a check mark under that station and after they checked their work with one of the teachers we changed the check mark to an X. It was important for us to have a visual record of where everyone was to minimize the chaos. These activities were perfect to keep students focused for the last two days before Spring break. Can we say it was a bit crazy?! I was really proud of how well the majority of the students worked together. I would love to hear about any learning stations you have been using in your math class. For more learning station ideas shared by other teachers check out this post on Corkboard Connections.
