This woman from the ethnic group of the Lobi people in Burkina Faso is over 90 years old and is wearing a small white lip disk. The Lobi people are perhaps the shiest people of Burkina Faso. Men still carry bows and arrows, and old women wear lip disks. Spread throughout Burkina Faso, Ghana and Ivory Coast, the Lobi also have the most characteristic villages; thanks in part to their shyness they have maintained their traditions intact. Perhaps a common initial reaction to the sculptural work of artist Francesco Albano is fright. It isn't entirely clear what is in front of us, but it seems human and and it seems wrong. Albano's sculptures appear to be parts or whole human bodies that are some how deformed or mutilated. Certain parts and appendages are easily discernible while others are more difficult to identify. The sculptures shed some light on the idea of ugliness, how we apply it to our bodies, and a general uneasiness with our physical selves. Albano's artwork addresses more than an just a physical aesthetic but a larger anxiety over physical well being. See more of his sculptures after the jump.

This seems to be a kite-weapon assembled using silk, leather and canvas, possibly for dispensing foul smoke over an enemy camp. Götz Quarg notes that according to Johannes Dlugosz' History of Poland, the Battle of Liegnitz was won by the Mongols using similar weaponry, brightly painted smoke dispensers full of chemicals that produced noxious gasses when shaken. This is what the Latin says, roughly: The flying dragon's head may be made of leather, it's center of canvas, but the tail of silk, colored differently. The head is located at the end of a three-part rotating body, assembled from wood, with a blower (zona - a drive unit?) in the middle. The head should be judged against the wind, and if it is so, let two lift his head, and a third party will bear the blower. Follow him [the dragon] on horseback, while the motion of its line of flight is directed upward, downward, rightward and leftward. The head was painted with red paint and the middle in a moon-silver color, with different [colors] at the end. Staatsbibliothek Gottigen: Cod. Ms. philos. 63 (In the Public Domain).
