Let's pay tribute to these fascinating old-timey jobs and the equally fascinating stories that led to their demise.
The only ID on this picture is “Philippines, 1949”, probably Manila. Anyone know about this rail vehicle. I suspect it was hand made using a large truck engine and cabin mating it to an old tranvia streetcar. Photograph taken by a “Life” magazine photographer. After WWII and probably before 1950. My guess would be 1946 or 1947. The original old photograph is in my personal collection.
A picture from a group of Smithsonian Institution, National Anthropological Archives listed as “Philippine schools and other subjects, 1900”. No other identification or location is given with the individual pictures. The scanned resolution is poor where many of the signs cannot be read. I do believe but not entirely sure that the pictures in the folder are all from the Manila area. Smithsonian Institution, National Anthropological Archives
Although he is best known for his stirring photos of the Vietnam War and Cultural Revolution in China, Marc Riboud also visited the Philippines in 1958 and used his talent to preserve a lot of memories. Some of these candid shots featured people from all walks of life and classes--from the late President Carlos P. Garcia to ordinary folks doing ordinary things.
