Protestant cemetery, Penang, Malaysia This is a strangely affecting place, right in the middle of the busy island city of Georgetown. I was told that most locals don't know it's there. In fact, when I told some locals I'd visited it, they were genuinely puzzled as to why I would want to. There are some interesting comments on graves. Some died very young, on ships or soon after arrival. One wonders about the lives they left and their families. There are some graves with Chinese inscriptions, presumably of servants who converted to Christianity.

Setting is incredibly important for me in my writing. I often start with setting and then write a scene to fit the place, rather than the other way around. I'm primarily a visual person and the aspects of place in terms of resonance and spirituality are also important. For my novel Prophecy I wanted to have the theme of bones throughout the book so these places were great inspiration. For a villain who wants to kill a quarter of the world, the dead are important witnesses.
