کندوان در 50 كيلومتري جنوب غربي تبريز؛ يكي از روستاهاي دهستان سهند مي باشد كه در 18 كيلومتري جنوب اسكو، در دامنه سرسبز سلطان داغي واقع شده است. اين روستا طبق سرشماري عمومي نفوس و مسكن سال 1375، 137 خانوار و 750 نفر جمعيت دارد كه به كار كشاورزي و دامداري و صنايع دستي اشتغال دارند. آنچه به كندوان هويت باستاني داده وجود 117 خانوار و منزل مسكوني در درون توده هاي مخروطي و هرمي شكل صخره اي است. روستاييان كندوان داخل اين توده ها براي خود خانه مسكوني، آغل، انبار و كارگاه ايجاد كرده اند. معماري صخره اي، حاكي از صحنه هاي مبارزه و جدال انسان با طبيعت و در خدمت گرفتن صخره هاي طبيعی است. در معماري معمولي، به وسيله مصالح ساختماني گچ، آهك و خشت، هيئت اصلي بنا را به وجود می آورند، در صورتي كه در معماري صخرهاي فضاي مورد نظر در درون توده سنگ هويدا مي گردد و سنگ، مانند كالبدي، قشري مستحكم در اطراف اين فضا ايجاد مي كند. Kandovan (also spelled Candovan[citation needed]) is a tourist village near Osku and Tabriz, Iran. Its fame is due to its special houses which are carved inside rocks. Some of the houses are at least 700 years old and are still being inhabited. Kandovan also has scenic beauty. It's a popular resort with hotels and restaurants there to serve tourists. Its mineral water is also popular by visitors and is believed to be a cure for kidney disease.
