Hi All, Well, I made another belly dancer doll. I just love making belly dancer costumes! They are so fun to make! It's all the embellishment that I just love doing. Anyway, It all started when I wanted to make a doll, but didn't want to start from scratch. I have so many unfinished dolls, that my new goal is to finish some of them to sell. So, I looked for a doll to finish (most are from classes that I've used as a teaching example to demonstrate on). I found a half-made Opera Singer doll I used when I taught that class in England 2 years ago. All I needed was to make a new costume for her, and re-do the face. Then, I got the idea of make a fat dancer after looking at some Pinterest sites (I love trolling through Pinterest, looking for inspiration.) I came across this photo: Don't you just love her? And, look at the socks/stockings! She kills me! So, I started to turn my Opera Singer doll into a dancer. First, I needed to put her in a "dance" pose. This became much harder than I thought it would. Because her legs were made "in one" with her body, there weren't any joints to move. I ended up cutting into the body to remove some stuffing to get her legs to move front and back, and to take a tuck at her waist so her hip would go up. I wanted this girl to be shaking it! Next, I got her armature set into a wooden base, so she would stand up. (I would have loved to make her belly bigger, but this body was originally designed to stand up straight, and be covered from neck to hem in a costume.) But, she does have wide hips & big breasts! So,-- on to the costume. I decided to use orange/gold as the main color, with a magenta accent. Of course I have to drag out all my fabrics to pick the right ones. What a beautiful mess I make! Like always, I start with the hem, and work my way up the body. I get the skirt and belt done first. I already had the arms, so that was easy. I just had to position them in a "dancer" way. Now for the top: By this time, I knew the original Opera Singer head wasn't going to work -- she was patterned with her mouth wide open, singing/shrieking a high note. So, I made a new head (slightly smaller) with a closed mouth. I gave her a big smile, and "smiling" eyes. (Smiling eyes are narrow, with a prominent lower eye-lid.) Next came the turban headdress. I also gave her a little metal crown, and some flowers (traditional for a fusion-style belly dancer). And, lots and lots of jewelry and ornaments. And, here she is: I gave her the name, "DANCE LIKE NO ONE'S WATCHING" I hope you enjoyed seeing my process. Right now, she is on her way to the "Road To California" quilt show in Upland, CA. Pamela is selling her at the "Treasures of the Gypsy" booth. Have fun!

Hi All, I've made another Tribal Belly Dancer candlestick doll. This time I gave her some yarn hair, and more skirt. I try to give the figure as much movement as I can, considering she's mounted on a candlestick at her hips. Hope you like it!
My three earliest paper doll memories are 'The Heavenly Blue Wedding', the two little ballet dolls I posted on January 25th and this set produced by Merrill. Two editions of this book were published, one in 1953 and this version dated 1959. I loved these dolls as a child. The costumes are some of the most original ever produced. I'm not sure of the exact differences between the two versions of this book but I have seen scanned images of two pages that are not part of this set and must presumably have belonged to the earlier one. Springtime Spring is finally here! Plum blossom in my garden.

I wasn't intending to return to blogging for at least another month - and then two things happened. First I received a lovely comment from my sweet friend Diane at Always Crave Cute, making me realise how much I miss everyone in the blogging community. Then I was sent a wonderful email from Patricia in California -a fellow paper doll enthusiast. Together they have prompted me to put together this post. One of the first paper doll books I posted in my blog was a set by Saalfield I called Little Ballerina Paper Dolls. This was back in January 2011 - the post has remained a popular one and is currently one of my top 10 most viewed posts of the month. When I bought the book I realised some of the ballet costumes were missing that I remembered playing with as a child. I kept searching and found this book. It has some of the additional outfits, but there are still 3 more dresses to be accounted for. Both these books are originals, not laser reproductions or recent compilations so there must be at least one more bumper version out there - the book I originally played with! As I haven't been blogging for a while I thought I'd also give an update on my swan family. They are still in the park and I'm hoping they have become such a feature of the place and favourite of everyone who visits that they will be allowed to stay. At Christmas there were seven - now there are six. I have no idea where the missing juvenile swan could have gone - the day before this happened another adult appeared in the park unexpectedly so perhaps they flew off into the sunset together. I'm not anticipating any new baby swans this year - but if these 6 stay I'll be happy! I took these photos the last morning I was able to go to the park. I now have a much longer commute into work I used to complain that it was bad before - now I have an extra half an hour each way! One of the things I have had to give up is my early morning stroll and this time spent with the swans. I can still go there at lunchtime but I miss these quiet moments in the morning tremendously. I no longer live in the mountains that in a short year had come to mean so much to me. The move was sudden and unexpected and I'm still feeling a bit bruised around the edges. Instead I now live in a vale - it is a magical enchanting place in its own right - and has made me find life quite baffling. If I had come here a year ago I would have been thrilled. For reasons I'll give on another occasion the fact that I am in this particular place is actually quite remarkable - in my lifetime I've travelled a long way and it has been quite an adventure. I don't always feel I'm controlling events but I usually recognise the pattern that emerges - I hope in time I will detect it here. I will just need a bit of time to get past the sensation of dislocation - I miss the atmosphere of isolation, the absolute silence and darkness at night and the sweeping vistas. My heart and my spirit are still wandering in the mountains - in time I'm hoping they will join me in the valley. Before we left we were snowed in and could not move from the house for about a week. This was one of the last photographs I took - it is my favourite! Please forgive me if I don't visit or comment with any regularity for a while and if my posting is a bit erratic. I still have a lot of things to straighten out and organise and I feel about 100 years older than I did this time last year! But I've put my big toe back in the water - with any luck before long I'll wade right back in.
