By José Alberto Hermosillo Every year, film festivals create a commemorative poster to celebrate the festival’s culture, heritage, and diversity and showcase the selected newest projects to the public. In those festivals where the magic happens, artists travel hundreds of miles to meet the press and other filmmakers and to hear the public’s opinion about their films, shorts, documentaries, and series. After three years of the pandemic, audiences returned to the theaters in full swing. The fact that audiences rebounded to the movie theaters inspired creators, artists, and graphic designers to compose numerous colorful pieces, alluring the event with stunning results. Festival in LA has chosen fifty out of five hundred outstanding works from around the world as the best film festival posters of 2023. In the selection process, we followed five basic principles in graphic design: alignment, repetition, contrast, hierarchy, and balance. The essential information in the headline, such as order, colors, size, and perspective, is crucial. Other vital factors are focal point, harmony, balance, and positive impact. In 2023, the posters were colorful and festive. The selection includes less-known film festivals, and for the first time in nine years, the most prestigious film festivals reached the higher positions on the list, achieving excellence to validate their hard work. This year, the number one spot went to Award-winning Mexican animator and filmmaker Jorge R. Gutierrez (“The Book of Life”), who created a masterful, colorful, and joyful piece with elements referring to the festivities of Día de los Muertos, where the “Cantrina” and many other happy Mexicans ready to mingle arrive at Lake Annecy. It represents what a film festival is about—a festivity for all. Cannes 2023 brought us a more sophisticated black-and-white design featuring French actress Catherine Deneuve.
