Let's take a little peek in a day in first grade! I love my job and working with the kids, tap to get some tips and tricks you can use too!
Well lookie there, school is about to start (or has started for some of you.) I cannot believe the summer has flown by so quickly. I wanted to hop on here and share a few COMPLETELY FREE resources for the first few weeks back to school. The weeks of starting back are hectic, crazy, expensive and oh so much fun! So grab these free resources to help make planning easier, learning engaging, and maybe hang on to your sanity a bit longer. :) First, I love these Beginning of the Year Agreements from PYP in Paradise. All you need is chart paper and post-its. I personally love to fancy up my walls a bit with the Chevron Chart Paper from Amazon, but the other stuff works great too! Have the students write down things they expect from you as a teacher. I also have mine do this as students as well. We do the teacher one first then the student one second. It is great for building community. It is free. It is engaging! Another activity I love involves candy. If your school does not allow this, you can do pom-poms or some other colored object. This is extremely fun for the kids the whole "sharing about yourself" thing a lot easier on the teacher. Now for this, you would need to buy candy (which is why I say, you can totally substitute this for something else that you already have.) I have even passed out crayons! It works great! I write this on an anchor chart on the board and then we go around sharing! I usually try to make sure all of the kids have one of each color. If not, that is okay too. Depends on how much time you have to share! Miss Decarbo has an amazing activity that you can grab for free as well! Simply click HERE and look at the PREVIEW of the resource. The PREVIEW can be downloaded and has the Magic Dough instructions and recipe for FREE. She did this on purpose, I promise. :) I encourage you to buy the WHOLE resource because it is amazing. But I promised FREE, so you can just grab this recipe for free. I did this with my 3rd and 5th graders....they loved it. Never too old for things like this. Also, we wrote about it. The kids really enjoyed making this. I also think it is important to start understanding your students. I always do this Reading Interest Inventory with my students. It is fun for the students to think about the different things they like (and dislike) about reading. I always emphasize being honest. Sometimes they want so badly to please us that they don't tell us how they really feel. This is especially true at the beginning of the year. I talk to them about my likes and dislikes with reading. This seems to help the students be more honest. I think we have all done this before but I have created free tags for the bag activity. I love this All About Me activity. All you need are brown paper bags and this free tag. I did share a Teacher Tip on Instagram last night though. I always have one of these made about me for the first day of school. I find it is the easiest way to explain it, it eases nerves and is a great conversation started with the kids! These are made to fit the bag even though they are bigger in the picture below. Lastly (because I could go on forever...) if you don't follow Jennifer Findley, she is great! I love using this free resource full of back to school (or first few weeks of school...because...life happens) activities. They are really great for multiple ages and my students are always so engaged when using these! I really hope these tips have been helpful! If you have a free resource in your shop for back to school...drop the link in the comments below! Sharing is caring! Happy Teaching! Hillary (affiliate links are provided for your convenience)
Mr. Wolf's Class is a fun graphic novel that captures the dynamic of a typical fourth-grade class. Anything can and does happen at Hazelwood Elementary.
The first week of school generally consists of getting to know one another, in addition to discussion and practice of classroom procedures and routines. We also got our creative juices flowing by creating summer reflection writing pieces, squiggle stories, and "All About Me" mini-posters. Students are getting to know one another and me, and we are learning to work together to build a successful and positive classroom environment. On Wednesday, I wrote out six questions, all having to do with how to make our classroom and ourselves function to the highest level, on six pieces of chart paper. Students, in groups of three, spent two minutes at each chart, collaborating and responding to each question on a sticky note. After all groups visited each chart paper station, I hung all of the charts up and we discussed each answer and noticed some very interesting trends. Here's the finished product, which you can click on to enlarge: Inspired by Life in 4B To tie into the previous activity, I was inspired by my wonderful teammates, Mrs. Fadden and Ms. Mattox, to develop at class pledge with my students. We reviewed our responses to the above questions, and then we put all of the ideas together to form a cohesive paragraph that we have all agreed will help us to remember why we are here at school and what our common goal is. Below is the rough draft of our class pledge (which I will type up, make pretty, and have all of my students sign): Since we were able to develop a class goal (to achieve success in third grade), I also had each student determine an individual goal after reading the story Matthew's Dream by Leo Lionni. I displayed our "Hopes and Dreams" for third grade near the classroom door, so that we can refer to, and revisit, them throughout the year. Lots of students are interested in learning how to sharpen their cursive skills, multiplication and division skills. I was very impressed by the number of students ready to take on our 40 book challenge! More on that later! Here's our class display of our hopes and dreams for third grade: Lastly, I read a book called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The premise is that everyone carries an invisible bucket everywhere they go. When your bucket is "filled" you feel happy. When your bucket is "empty" you feel sad or upset. People can fill buckets by lending a helping hand, smiling, being kind, including others in games, and more. People can empty buckets by teasing, being ungrateful, acting disrespectfully, and more. I encourage my students to recognize the actions of bucket-fillers by writing them quick note and sticking it in their bucket display. This helps make everyone feel good. When we feel good, we want others to feel good. Therefore, kindess is passed from person to person. This is our bucket-filling display, complete with ways we can fill buckets and ways we can empty buckets: I look forward to more of these types of meaningful activities that promote teamwork, kindness, and achievement with your child!

Too many classroom icebreakers require students to take big social risks with people they barely know. Or they don't really help students get to know each other. Or they are just plain cheesy.

I created this bingo card to motivate our kids to try new things during summer. It can also be used to make them realize that they did a lot of fun activities during their time off. I'll be using this bingo card with my own kids. You can give students a copy before the end of school year or use it as a back to school activity. Have fun! Happy summer! This authentic 130-year-old print was rescued from a disbound volume of The Encyclopaedia Britannica - A Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and General Literature - Ninth Edition – 1875-1889 – Edinburgh: Adam & Charles Black. This rare antique AQUEDUCT print is of the REMAINS OF AQUEDUCT OF METZ; AQUEDUCT OF PONT DU GARD NEAR NISMES; AQUEDUCT OF MAINTENON; AQUEDUCT DEL TORRE, SPOLETO; CHIRK AQUEDUCT (ELLESMERE CANAL), and DEE AQUEDUCT (ELLESMERE CANAL). It is Plate IV from Vol. II. It is a single sheet, blank on the reverse, and measures approx. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.5 x 27.5 cm), with clean borders for framing. It is not mounted, matted or framed so you are free to display it how you want. It would look great framed as a set with other Aqueduct, Rivers, Canals and Harbours prints in our range. Considering its age, this 19th Century print is in excellent condition, on well-preserved paper. The beautifully detailed design is still bright, and the paper has a lovely satin feel. There is tonal aging (to be expected from antique prints and only adds to their charm) otherwise it is very clean with no obvious defects to mention. These fascinating, antique prints make unique, original gifts and wonderful additions to your home or office décor. Click the ADD TO CART button, then take a look at our range of maps and prints on offer – you could even start your own exclusive collection! We take great care to make sure our prints reach you in perfect order by enclosing them in protective plastic sleeves and shipping them flat in rigid mailers. The shipping amount is for the first print - there is no additional shipping cost for orders of multiple prints, and we ship worldwide within one business day of receiving cleared funds. All prints, whether antique, vintage or modern should be protected from exposure to direct sunlight. Thanks for visiting our store and please stop by again soon as we’ll be adding to it regularly.
