Juniperus scopulorum is a remarkable pyramidal shaped tree better known as the Rocky Mountain Juniper. This slow growing evergreen maintains a slender width while growing to a moderate height. This useful combination makes it an ideal selection for locations in your landscape project that require a visual height element but may not have the width to accommodate a wider tree or shrub. The Moonglow variety of juniper is also an ideal choice for horticulturists interested in creating bonsai. The upward forming branches produce needle shaped foliage in a deep blue-green color with a delicate silvery tinge, and these maintain their color throughout the entire year. Its hardiness also means that it is suitable for locations that may experience drought conditions, adding to its versatility. If you are in need of a slender and beautiful evergreen plant that can adapt to nearly any design feature, the Rocky Mountain Juniper is the tree for you.
Several types of evergreen trees and shrubs are easy to grow as a living privacy screen and a great source of year-round greenery. These plants include varieties of fir, cedar, pine, spruce, false cypress, cypress, arborvitae, holly, and yew.

Polystichum acrostichoides is a wonderful, easy-to-grow, deer-resistant US native (Minnesota south to Florida) with sturdy, dark, evergreen fronds emanating from a central point, making a 2' wide clump...particularly effective when used in drifts. The fronds first emerge upright, then flatten with age. Christmas fern (known in PC circles as the Seasonal Holiday Fern) is one of the finest of all evergreen ferns and retains its attractive appearance all winter...simply superb for woodland gardens, especially those with deep shade areas! Maintenance: Christmas fern is a maintenance free, evergreen perennial that requires little if any care in the garden. Since Polystichum acrostichoides holds onto its leaves for several years, the old ones will eventually degrade. In nature this needs no assistance, but in the garden, these may be removed to improve the plants appearance. Do not ever remove the current year foliage, since this will kill the plant. Growing Conditions: Polystichum acrostichoides prefers average to slightly dry soil with good drainage. It will not survive in soils that remain waterlogged. Acidic soils to pH's near neutral are fine. Christmas fern is very shade tolerant, to all but the very darkest sites. It also has a bit of tolerance to sun, but this should be limited to 1-2 hours. Garden Value: Evergreen groundcovers which do not spread or require maintenance are invaluable in the woodland garden, and Christmas fern provides both. Ferns provide a wonderful textural contrast between bolder textured plants like hosta, asarum, and Solomon's seal.

Whew, this time of year is sheer madness, garden designs and installs, interior designs and installs, equals one tired gal! Thankfully the shop is in the best of hands with the best of staff. One bit I am focusing on constantly when adding plantings into the designs is my clear focus on foliage shape and color, the two most important elements to an interesting landscape, with impact. It is how to extend a colorful garden Gorgeous? YES! But.....what happens when those flowers are gone? Sure there may be some flowers to follow however it could have season long impact. In this case all green, smallish leaves = b-o-r-i-n-g Same here. It is easy to create a lovely garden in mid-summer, it is the remainder of the year that is important too Uniquely attractive, in a subtle way. Today however it is all about impact created with diverse foliage POW! YES! Virtually few perennials, massive interest with diversity of colored foliage and varying leaf shapes GROUND COVERS Lamium 'White Nancy', sparkles in the evening Ajuga 'Bronze Beauty' with the added bonus of blue flowering spikes in Spring Lysimachia 'Aurea' ORNAMENTAL GRASSES Miscanthus 'Zebra Grass' Festuca 'Elijah Blue; Miscanthus 'Purpurascens ' For shade, 'Hakonechloa 'All Gold' HERBS Purple Sage Purple Basil Variegated Thyme 'Lemon' ANNUALS Caladium 'Ansel Adams'........to die for! White Birch Cornus 'Golden Shadows' And........that is just for starters! Now, how to combine these plants in your borders. This is where the leaf shape takes center stage. The best neighbors are opposites; thick leaf next to thin leaves More of the above Thick and thin Something else to note......if you have a bed that appears to be messy, the cause is often too many small leaves. Large leaves lend order. Imagine if the above tropical was not there, there would be no focal point and the Verbena would appear medowish Let's take a look at great examples of this conversation Hope you found some inspiration, I love this topic! The Serbian Spruce is a beautiful evergreen conifer with a very narrow conical growth habit with the potential to be 50-60'. Like many spruce trees it will maintain its lower branches until someone cuts them off to mow around the base. The lateral branches near the top of the tree are more ascending with weakly pendant side shoots. May have a nice bluish cast. They look great in a grove like this see at Whistler Mt. in BC. I have seen only one here in the county but I am sure there are others. As with all spruce trees, the leaves are linear and are attached to the stem by a stub like projection called a pulvinus. However, unlike most spruces, these 1/2 - 3/4" long leaves are flattened in cross section (most spruce leaves are easily rolled between your fingers). The tree as an overall bluish cast due to the lower surface of the leaves being very blue while the upper is greenish. Shoots are orange brown with dark hairs as seen above. Cones prevalent on young plants. Purple when young maturing purple-brown and usually resinous. 1.5-3" long. One of my favorite cultivars 'Burns Pendula'. Misidentification: Spruce trees in general can be difficult to distinguish from one another. This is one of a few that have flatted leaves, meaning you cant roll them between your fingers. Location: Aptos 49 Pebble Beach Dr. 661 Pleasant Valley Ridge, all the way up and on your left. Looks like a private driveway, so be warned.
The sculptural, textural, and colorfully steady presence of conifer trees is reassurance that the garden is there all year to enjoy.
