The main difference between DNA damage and mutation is that DNA damage is a structural change in DNA whereas mutation is a change in the nucleotide sequence of DNA. Furthermore, DNA damage prevents DNA replication while mutation alters the genetic information encoded by DNA
Somatic Mutation vs. Germline Mutation. Somatic Mutation occurs in somatic or body cells. Germline Mutation occurs in germ cells.

Neo-Darwinism offers this basic equation for evolution: mutations + natural selection + millions of years = particles-to-person evolution. In this view, evolution is like a white-haired tinkerer, fiddling around with components in his shop until a workable innovation is rolled out.

HHMI has a Genetic Mutations and Disease Interactive that shows how mutations can occur. We know that mutations are changes in DNA that can occur at any point. Some of these mutations cause diseases and other don't depending on where in the genome they occur. This interactive shows how mutations can affect a person if it occurs in either a somatic cell or a germ cell.

A mutation occurs at a single base on a polynucleotide DNA chain is called point mutation. A mutation is a natural event that changes the genetic constitution of a genome, either helpful or harmful to us.
The heterozygote advantage is shown in several genetic diseases: cystic fibrosis heterozygotes are resistant to cholera, and the thalassemia trait confers a benefit for coronary artery disease. This article explores different genes that have mutated with unexpected consequences.
This is a bundle of 5 activities plus a foldable codon chart to help students learn about mutations. Gene mutations AND chromosomal mutations are covered, as well as missense, nonsense, and silent mutations. There is also a digital version included hosted on Google Slides, see folder titled DIGITAL for PDFs with links. In the bundle you will find... ❃ Gene mutations flap book (deletion, insertion, substitution) -students use the diagrams to determine which mutations are represented, and provide the details. ❃Chromosomal mutations flap book (inversion, translocation, deletion, duplication) -students use the diagrams to label the mutation and provide the details under the flap. ❃Missense Nonsense Silent -students create their own missense, nonsense and silent mutations using the codon chart ❃Modeling Insertion Trifold -students follow the directions and create their own insertion mutation, comparing the amino acid sequences before and after. ❃Point mutation vs. Frameshift mutation Venn Diagram -Students compare point and frameshift mutations ❃Foldable DNA codon chart -lifts up so students have room underneath should they need to jot down a few notes You may also be interested in: Mutation Simulation- Modeling mutations Mutations PowerPoint Notes ☆☆Follow me on☆☆ Pinterest Facebook Instagram Newsletter
This bundle includes everything you need to teach about genetic mutations! Begin with a lesson on the different types of genetic mutations and then reinforce the new content with a hands-on activity analyzing the effects of several different types of mutations on a DNA sequence and the protein produced. To represent the randomness of DNA mutations, a dice is rolled to determine what type of mutation each student receives. This activity can then be followed by a subsequent lesson on different types of genetic disorders, if desired. Finally, assess student understanding with 3 pages of review worksheets! DISTANCE LEARNING: This product is completely digital and can be easily emailed to students or posted to an online classroom page. If using Google Classroom, these file types can be opened using Google Docs and Google Slides. As the lab activity only requires a six-sided die (which many students have at home from many board games), this can be a great distance learning option! Students can type directly on the document and submit it virtually. If a student does not have a dice at home, instruct them to Google "virtual dice" and they can roll a virtual dice online! Included in this Bundle: 1-DNA Mutations Lab Activity w/ Answer Key 2-Genetic Mutations and Disorders Guided Notes w/ Answer Key 3-Genetic Mutations and Disorders Power Point Presentation 4-Genetic Mutations Review Worksheets (PDF) w/ Answer Key

The differences between silent, missense, and nonsense mutations can be quite challenging for my students to master without some practice. I use this worksheet to cement the differences between each type of mutation and the effect that it will have on the resulting protein. In addition to the three mutations mentioned above, this worksheet also asks your students to identify what type of mutation occurred in the DNA sequence: substitution, insertion, or deletion. To use this worksheet, you can assign it as a Google or Kami Assignment through your school’s LMS. You can also save the document as a PDF for use in your physical classroom! Note: The document will come as a Google Doc that is designed to be posted by you and edited by your students. There is a separate link at the end of the document for you to make a free copy of the Kami & Printable version. The only difference between the two versions is the way students answer questions. Both versions are included with the purchase of this activity. Pick what works best for you! Struggling with getting your students to understand the 3 types of mutations? THIS IS THE WORK SHEET TO HAVE THEN. 1st page explains: •Genes •DNA •Nucleotides •Mutations Next it shows them what the 3 types of mutations are with REAL SENETNCES so they can understand them better. Finally, they have to demonstrate mastery by explain which mutation happened in the DNA examples. Great, easy to use and understand worksheet to use as an introduction into mutations!
