The small municipality of Kirkkonummi, in southern Finland, can trace its history back millennia, from a medieval stone church to World War II–era bunkers. Next to that church, JKMM Architects revitalized a concrete library from the 1980’s, the result not only the IIDA’s institutional category winner but also taking home the best of competition award. “Contemporary libraries are where people get together to share knowledge and experiences,” JKMM founding partner Teemu Kurkela says. “This is why Finns today refer to them as public living rooms.”

A leading European book publisher founded in 1950, Suhrkamp Verlag is a household name in much of Germany. Its literary portfolio includes such international heavyweights as Samuel Beckett and T.S. Eliot. Following a relocation from Frankfurt to Berlin in 2010, however, financial troubles and internal strife left staff languishing for years at temporary headquarters. Whilst designed by David Chipperfield Architects, Pacific Quay (docks are never called 'dock' these days) Studios was completed by Keppie Design in a slightly controversial move which some say was an example of the BBC bottling-out of their much vaunted commitment to top-notch architecture. Suffice to say though, the quality of detail is still a delight in this somewhat deceptive building... Pacific Quay is a completely modern name: the partially-filled dock that formerly occupied the site was known as Prince's Dock. It was the site of the 1988 Garden Festival: the subsequent permanent regeneration took almost twenty years to materialise. The red, or Dumfriess-shire, sandstone came from a quarry that was re-opened for this project. It's a rather nice use of material giving the building a sense of place.
