Store in a cool and dry location such as the refrigerator or basement to best preserve germination rates. Planting Instructions: Soil Preparation and Fertilizing: Carrots are a cool-season crop and don't do as well in hot summer months. Carrots like loose, well-drained soil to allow the roots to expand easily. If the soil is full of rocks and clods, the roots can become misshapen. To prepare the soil, clear the area of rocks, trash, and large sticks. Small pieces of grass and leaves can be mixed into the soil to make it richer. Spade the soil 8-12 inches deep and completely cover plant material. You may optionally scatter 1 cup of a complete fertilizer on the soil for each 10 feet of row to be planted. Rake the soil until it is smooth and work the beds into 4-6 raised ridges to allow soil to drain and let air enter soil. Space the ridges 8-12 inches apart from center to center or further apart if carrots are to be followed by a summer crop. You plant 2 or more rows of carrots on each ridge. Planting: Plant seeds as soon as the soil can be worked in the Spring and soil temperature reaches about 45F. For a Fall crop, plant in mid-to-late Summer for a harvest before the first frost. Use a hoe handle or stick to make a 1/2 inch furrow deep down the center of the ridge. Plant 2-3 seeds in the furrows spaced 3 inches apart within the rows. Cover lightly with loose soil then sprinkle with water. You may cover with a thing layer of fine compost or potting mix to help retain moisture. Planting Depth: 1/2 inch Within-Row Spacing: 3 inch Between-Row Spacing: 12 inches Care During the Season: Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged during the germination period, as carrots are sensitive to drying out during this period. Water the plants well weekly if it does not rain. Weeding: Keep the carrots free of weeds, which rob weak root systems of nutrients and moisture. Insecticides: Insecticides may be used to protect plants. Before using a pesticide, please read the label and always follow cautions, warnings and directions. Diseases: Check plants daily and treat with an approved fungicide if disease do appear. Neem oil, sulfur, and other fungicides are available for use. Please always follow label directions. Harvesting: Wash and taste-test carrots to determine if they are sweet, crisp, and flavorful to help determine when to harvest. Carrots are often harvested when they reach a mature size of 6-8 inches in length or when they reach 3-4 inches for baby snacking carrots. Though, carrots can be left to grow larger if desired. Harvest carrots by pulling from the tops until the roots separate from the soil. May be started inside in seed trays and transplanted when soil begins to warms outside. Direct-sow Carrot seed 1 to 2 weeks before the last spring frost date, when the soil has warmed up to 50°F. Prior to sowing, cultivate the bed deeply and thoroughly to promote baby root growth. Keep the soil moist until they germinate. Thin seedlings 1 to 2 inches apart so each can grow with space and nutrition. 50+ seed pack Please also note that plants are living organisms and their germination and growth depends on many factors, such as temperature, soil type, humidity and the frequency that they are watered, sowing time and conditions, use of fertilizers and plant protection agents (pesticides), as well as weather and climate conditions. Cosmic Purple Carrot Heirloom Vegetable Seeds Daucus carota Listing is for 1 packet of minimum 30 seeds Learn how to grow carrots from seed all the way to harvest with my YouTube video tutorial: https://youtu.be/nsEZCDwjxFw I love the deep purple skin color of these carrots. The inside part of the carrot is bright orange and coreless. Therefore, the purple and orange contrast beautifully together when I am cooking with them. This is a "Danvers" type of carrot, so it handles compacted soils better than other varieties. It produces carrots that are on average 7 inches long. I like to harvest at the 4th month mark (not 3), for bigger and sweeter carrots. General planting guidelines suggest to direct sow carrot seeds 3 weeks before your average last frost date. Then succession sow every 2 weeks for a continual harvest. Carrots prefer to grow in temperatures between 45-80F. If it gets too hot (over 80F), they get stunted and stop growing. If your in a warmer climate. zones +8, it can be a challenge trying to grow them as there is a short window where temperatures land in the ideal range. Using my garden as an example to determine when to direct sow carrot seeds - I use www.plantmaps.com to calculate when I should direct sow seeds in my zone 9B garden. Put in your zip code and it will generate a lot of important gardening information specific to your area. At the bottom is a monthly chart of average max and low temperatures. Look for the months where the average maximum temperature doesn't exceed 80F. For me, this is November thru March. I can start direct sowing seeds in November, with December being the last chance. This allows 4 months of growing time so I can harvest before April arrives when temperatures now exceed 80F. If carrots are grown in too much heat, it can stunt their growth and cause a bitter flavor. Follow me on social media because I post a lot of information on how to grow the very same seeds available in my Etsy shop. Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok: jerrasgarden. PLANTING Germination: 10 - 21 days ***Carrots are notorious for difficult germination. You must keep the seeds moist at all times to have successful germination. I water the spot where I direct sowed the seeds daily and get good germination, usually within 10 days.*** Seed Sowing Depth: Sprinkle the seeds over the soil surface, press them down gently to make contact with the soil, do not cover with soil. Sowing: Direct sow 3 weeks before your last spring frost date. If your in zones +8 - direct sow during the fall, in the first month where average maximum temperatures fall below 80F. Harvest: Most seed packets will say ready to harvest in 90 days. However, I find that if I let my carrots go to 120 days, they are much bigger and have better flavor. I would not allow them to go past 120 days as they will start to get woody in texture. Terms and conditions READ THIS PLEASE: - Seeds will be shipped with no planting instructions to keep seed costs low to the buyer. Germination and plant care information is included in the description. I encourage each gardener to research specifics on how to be successful growing them. I also have lots of information on my TikTok, Instagram and YouTube channel all under the account name jerrasgarden. I started this shop to share my love of certain seed varieties and spread the knowledge of gardening. Please contact me if you cant find information or have additional questions. - No returns or refunds once shipped. I am not responsible for lost or damaged packages caused by USPS. Since there are so many factors that affect germination and growing success, no refunds or exchanges are allowed once seeds have shipped. These are the same seeds I use in my personal garden so I can attest to their viability.
