With this clever sewing tip from Threads #174, you can get rid of those scratchy zipper ends.
My girlfriend came over to refill my estrogen reserves last week, and brought with her a fantastic craft for us to do together while chatting, laughing, gossiping and catching up after her long vacation. One third of the way through summer vacation with three boys, she knew just what I needed. She brought over a bunch of stuff for us to sit down and make our own button bracelets. So fun! The greatest part was that each of our bracelets turned out differently! Do you want to join us? Let's make some funky Button Bracelets! Materials: Buttons in various sizes (test to be sure your cord will fit into the holes) Round leather or coated cotton cord (1 mm in diameter) Instructions: Arrange your buttons ahead of time to lay out your pattern Begin with a length of cord about 18 inches long (you will adjust this to fit at the end, but cutting it too short will result in frustration and some swearing...trust me, I know). The more knots you intend to make the longer the cord. Fold your cord in half and tie a knot in the looped end, like this: Now, begin threading the cord through your button holes. Criss-cross your cord for the 4 hole buttons like this: The same is possible for the two holed buttons. Bring a cord up through each hole then back down the next hole like this: You might also want to thread your button onto one piece of cord then knot, like this: To finish off your bracelet, just pull the cord through the last button and tie in a square knot. See? You can pull the last button through the loop at the other end to attach to your wrist. Now, go crazy! Try to be random and mix it up, stack some, knot some, criss-cross some, there is no right or wrong way to do this! Get creative, girl! You might end up with something like this: Or simple shell and wood buttons look like this: Or you could go nuts and work in some beads like this: Now, gather some buttons, call up some girl friends, set the kids into the back yard to play, and have some fun! PS (JoAnn's has some bags of fantastic HUGE buttons with HUGE holes for the little ones to get in on the act. It will be a HUGE relief to use these buttons for them. A bloggy friend suggested dipping lengths of yarn in clear nail polish and twisting. Once dry, they will thread easily for the kiddos.)
I've been chomping at the bit to make one of these Bionic Gear Bags! I riled up a few pals to make them too! I found it because I was looking for a needle book with a grid to make as Goodie Gifts for our Spring Retreat. I came across this image on Google and trotted off to Craftsy.com to buy the pattern for it! Bionic Needle Organizer Wallet Well after that, true to "Jan-Form"....I ended up clicking through links and searching some more. That's when I realized that the Needle book was actually an ACCESSORY to a much COOLER item! Bionic Gear Bag, Dumpling Dish & Needle Wallet Bionic Gear Bag "Tricked Out" Pockets Several people in the Facebook group asked for details of what I did to "trick out" my pockets. The pattern designer has a very unique way of writing patterns. It's very very long (wordy), but she says early on that she wrote it in this manner so that you can feel like you are sitting along beside her making the project with her! If you are a thorough instruction reader, you'll love it. If you are the type of quilter that goes right for the bullet points, cutting list and pictures....you WILL struggle with this pattern. Any way, at the point in building the bag that you can add features to the zipper pockets, she tells you. And makes some suggestions! Here's what I did: Added Magnetic Snaps to the bag AND the Dumpling Dish so that I can stand stuff up behind the bowl without the bowl moving. A small pocket for my screwdriver\or thimble. (Mostly screwdriver - I am the resident "Vintage sewing machine fixing person" at every sewing gathering...so I always need it to rescue a machine from it's owner Small square Vinyl pockets on THREE of the pockets. The paper tab that is in there was the thing I used to determine size. I swear I forget what's in zippered pockets, so a label to fill out is really helpful to me! Couple of different small sections of elastic, spaced for specific tools. I want to be able to stand up and easily grab certain things while I'm working and have a quick place to put them back Vinyl on 4th zipper pouch. One side is for Index cards (shopping lists, or "put-it-in-the-BGB-list", etc. and the other is for business cards.(Grin - MY business cards) Bionic Gear Bag Closed. I spent a LOT of time making sure the binding was perfect and it was totally worth it. I can't tell you how many projects I've done where the last step is to "bind" and it makes the entire project look like crap. It's one of the most valuable things I've learned from the By Annie Classes I'm taking. GLUE BASTE BINDING!!! THEN SEW!! Stars 'n Stripes 'n Scraps Quilt (queen size--just finished Sun 3/13/16) Answering the question--what to do with all those lovely fabric scraps? I'm still pecking away at my fabric scrap piles, building as many scrappy queen size quilts as I can by May, then I'll switch to building purses, baby quilts, table runners, and pot holders. I am full speed in my commitment to reduce 3 big bins of scraps, mostly 2.5" strips. I have a fourth bin full of 1.5" strips - and here's what those 1.5" strips made in the past: a decorative pocket for a soft luggage, this travel bag is 22 x 22. and I make other soft luggage out of upholstery material--oh yeah, got a big bin full of upholstery material scraps. Here are a couple pics of the soft luggage the small cotton fabric scraps I build these . . . little padded pouches with metal swivel clasp to carry cell phone or eye glasses. and rope baskets that are cool seriously, it takes a full day to make one of these. I wrap fabric strips around 1/4" cotton clothesline rope to create a disc (bottom of the basket), then I start nudging the disc upwards with my left hand to build the wall while I stitch. A zig zag stitch holds firmly. Ok, ok back to photos of current quilt Stars 'n Stripes 'n Scraps . . . my signature free hand edge to edge quilting "Feather Bouquet" I confess, even after doing the last three quilts--I made only a dent in the scrap piles. Ah, oh well. I'll keep sewing 'n sewing. I'm sure I mentioned one more scrap pile of 1" wide or less strips and short lengths?? I give them to my friend Jerry who uses all the colorful bits in beautiful rag rugs he looms. They are gorgeous! Here's the half way point of long arm quilting process. Lots of color loading quilt (floating quilt) After removing the quilt from the frame, I cut away excess batting and backing, square the quilt, sew 400+ inches of fabric binding, install the binding, then sit for 5-6 hours turning the binding and hand stitch. It's not complicated work. Its time consuming, but relaxing. I'll drop in more photos later. Right now, I'm going to take a nap. Talk to you later.
