Learn the theory behind the quilt-as-you-go technique by working your way through a charming potholder before creating the Tinker patchwork bag from blocks you create on the fly. Tara shows you how to use scraps from your stash to build out from a single square using a freehanded approach that celebrates the uniqueness of each quilted bag. Whether you prefer straight-line or free-motion quilting, your extemporaneous blocks will blossom as your bag comes to life. Add a simple pocket or follow Tara’s instruction for a painless hidden zipper pocket. Learn how to add material to the bottom of your bag for extra durability and box corners for extra stability. Finish off your quilted bag with a magnetic closure and eye-catching bias binding. Or hand-sew an invisible binding for extra sophistication.
I had a lot of fun doing this project. I had a person in mind I wanted to make a purse for. As soon as I saw the fabric I knew it was meant to be used to make a purse. I love the colors. First I measured a purse my Mom made for me to get the dimensions. Then I cut out my pieces of fabric and my batting. I quilted the fabric and then I put binding on the pockets. Then I made the straps and sewed them on. I don't have a serger but I did a straight stitch and then a zig-zag stitch. I added a button and a little strap to tie the top closed with the button. I'm pretty proud of it. I think it looks nice for my first purse. You should see my Mom's purses. Her's are stunning and she is awesome at machine quilting. I am so excited to give this to my friend at church tomorrow. If she doesn't like it, I will be mildly pleased because that means I get to keep it for myself!

When I made a quilt several years ago, I accidentally cut a few of the blocks with the diagonals circling the center clockwise instead of counter-clockwise, as the rest were cut. No matter. The extra blocks worked fine when I finally got them back out of my UFO drawer recently and made them into this quilted patchwork tote. The bag is 15.5 x 15.5 x 7.5 inches, a great size for doing some serious shopping. 20150228_24-A
