I visited yesterday 5th Main Quiltfestival in Aschaffenburg. Just wanted to look around and see all the quilts shown. I didn't spend much time there and didn't buy any fabric from the shops there - sad to say, it's cheaper to order fabrics from US than buy them in Germany. And with prices almost twice as high here... well, I have to be in a really big need to buy any fabric in Germany. Another bad thing which I noticed were the prices of books. I planned to buy some. But when I saw the price of 36€ for a book which interested me, I decided to wait and check the price in an online shop (I buy book via amazon; prices are really good, sending fast and free). As you may imagine, the same book, new with free shipping was cheaper. And how! It costed only 23€ in amazon! I can understand few € difference, but not such huge one. Well... :/ The main purpose of my visit were quilts. Lots of quilts. Many traditional ones, few... hmmm... let's say extravagant and some, on which I could stop my eyes and looks with a pleasure :) Here are my few personal favourites (I don't have many photos): I like mini quilts more. Those exhibited on the festival were really wort seeing. This is my fav. Wonderful piece of art. Such tiny details, wonderful taste for colours. A masterpiece! Hugs
Create Stunning Results with More Complex Designs! Strips of fabric woven together were used to create the top for this mini quilt. It’s a fun technique that’s well worth learning, as it can be used many different ways. Part of the fun of the process is not knowing just what the final results will be …
It's Thurdsay. It's raining. I just finished up a couple large sewing orders. We're going away for the weekend. I can't get motivated to start anything new. So, I started looking through photos of items I made, in some cases, years ago. Maybe time to try these again?

Think about you, quilting. Pair that image with your wildest, most wouldn’t-it-be-amazing dream. What does your marvel of a quilting experience look like? For astronaut Karen Nyberg, her quilting adventure was a literal out-of-this world event: making a quilt block in orbit, on the International Space Station. Wow! Inspiration doesn’t come on a scale much …
Laundry can be fun! My laundry room features a wall of small quilts that I have made over the year. Most of them have been made using an antique doll quilt as inspiration. A lot of them are featured in this book. The quilt in the top left corner is a favorite. You can find the pattern in our Collection of Small Vintage Quilts. See the little quilt folded on the top of the basket? That is my mothers doll quilt and has here named embroidered on the back - so special. I use little tiny nails to attach yardsticks to wall. Leave the heads sticking out so you can hook the nail into the binding between the stitches.
Quilting…Where does it come from? How old is it? Why was it so important? Today, we’re going to take a look at a mini history of quilting. Hopefully, we’ll answer many of the ques…
Ahhhh pure happiness is... Freddy Moran! Here's some pictures of her forty quilts on display at Island Quilter on Vashon Island. Of course, she is famous for her houses... and her Lady of Guadeloupe works of art... whatever the theme, there is always a vibrant happiness! I arranged to have Freddy come teach a two day class. Sixteen lovely and quite creative ladies gathered at Aunt Mary's for a simply splendid soaking in of all Freddy had to offer. Here's the welcome basket I put together with some of my precious Freddy scraps! Also included were bubbles, a happy noise maker, polka dot pencil, Curly Girl stationery, and tissue. My husband recently returned from a trip to Guatemala where he bought some worry dolls, so I attached one to each basket (in a house of course). Just in case any lady had a worry... she would have a way to release it! Freddy shared some of her ideas on creativity. I took some notes and would like to share what I heard her say (a mix of what she really said with my own memory twist). You think you don't know how to do it, but you do! The hardest part is getting started. So, take the part (block) you like the most... make a few... put it on the design wall... or make some strata... or just start sewing some pieces of fabric together... pretty soon... the parts (blocks) will start to tell you what it wants to be...a medallion quilt, a row quilt, etc. Here's Freddy, without a ruler, making a liberated star. Here's Freddy, (with Carrol in the background) talking about contrast (of course!) Contrast can be light and dark, curvy and straight, etc. BUT, contrast can be a difference in mood! Ahhh.... Here she has three bolts she felt conveyed a different mood. She said it's not only the color, but the way color is used, and most importantly, THE VALUE! Freddy believes that the success of her quilts is probably due to color, BUT... because she learned VALUE, the colors can be seen! AHA! Here's Freddy searching through the ever generous Marta's glorious scrap collection. She demonstrated some of her parts department and then she demonstrated how she makes her collages. Collage is her new favorite creative play. Watch the magic... Freddy said quilting should be a total joy and each one of us has the potential to find that joy. I think... for me... the best thing about Freddy is that she is all about living life to the fullest doing what your love fearlessly that's a great philosophy not only for quilting but also for life!

These little inchies are great fun to work on and great for getting creative inspiration for other work. I have been tempted to do some for a while but it took signing up for a swap before I actually got around to doing some. For my first swap partner I made inchies with a blue theme in mind............... (click in the pictures for a closer look) For my second swap partner I made inchies with a black theme in mind..................... With this swap I have 2 partners each gets 12 inchies. So I made 16 of each colour theme and below are the 8 inchies I have decided to keep for myself. I figured I would soon build up a nice personal collection which I will probably frame. It will be nice to build up a collection in a variety of colours. In return for the ones I send I will hopefully receive 2 sets of 12 back, and hopefully again these will be in my colour preferences so if I build up a collection of these they should also make a nice collection to frame. So I have been thinking and wondered if anyone would like to swap 12 inchies with me, I would prefer fabric inchies, embroidered & embellished in your style. So if you are interested please leave a comment or email me privately.
Last week there was a lot of noise outdoors : it turned out to be the noise of a chainsaw (which makes me nervous most of the time) Some man were busy on the little island right on the other side of the water next to our garden. I looked in terror : Would they really ? ........ Noooo ! the gorgeous weeping willows In a devastating trapeze act the man were decimating the two trees untill ... there were only two pitiful remnants instead of two majestic trees ( "it will be for the best" the Parks Department will probably say ... yuk !) This tiny creature gave me more fun : Lissotriton vulgaris (a newt) he (or she) was hiding with another sibling and mum under the geraniums (but the picture of the three of them wasn't sharp enough) * And indoors the stitching on the sunny heart piece went on and on ... After all the "sun rays" were there (in rainbow colours) the magic thread was stitched in place. Which left me only with the invisible basting of the backside which I did today ! "A warm heart" will be send of to France tomorrow to a very dear friend (and namesake)

When it comes to the best thread for quilting, how do you choose? There are a lot of decisions to make and factors to consider. There's also the issue of whether you are looking for thread for machine quilting or hand quilting. Many of these thread tips are helpful for any sort of sewing, so keep this handy for your non-quilting sewing projects, too! The best threading for quilting is generally a cotton or polyester-cotton blend. Avoid cheaper polyester threads as they are more likely to break or snap over time. The weight of your thread depends on your fabric and pattern. Thicker fabrics or quilts with more layers of fabric need a thicker weight (or stronger) thread. First, we will discuss thread in general, looking at the terms associated with thread and how it's measured. Then we will go into the common thread materials each thread type from which each is made. We will then focus on types of thread you will see when looking at thread spools along with the types of thread that are readily available. Some are great for quilting and some are not as fitting. Finally, we will focus on the best machine quilting threads as well as the best threads for hand quilting. So, start reading and get ready to learn all about thread in relation to quilting and choosing the best threads for your upcoming quilt projects. These quilts designed by Libs Elliott after collaborating with Joshua Davis using a programming language called Processing are a an extraordinary addition to the symbiotic relationship between crafting and code.
Hello! I wanted to share with you my quilt top that I had recently completed and entered into QuiltCon West 2016. I had sketched out the bones of this design back in the fall of 2014. It was incomplete but mostly it was just a starting point. Just something for me to reference back to in case I ever felt inspired to finish it. Since inspiration never came, I decided it would be best to make this as a sampler, so I could see what it would like look as a quilt top. The majority of this quilt was improvised. I wasn't sure which shapes would be which colors, and since the design was not complete, I wasn't even sure what the final product was going to look like. It helped that I chose a cohesive palette. I originally was going to frame it in black and then place a white border around that before binding it. This was not planned and was not decided upon until I reached that point in the decision process. When I had completed the binding, the white border did not include the black pluses in the corners. I reached out to Instagram, and a lovely bunch of people suggested it. Thank you if you were one of those who suggested black pluses because it came out fabulous. I had also thought about incorporating 1981 somewhere in the quilt, but that never happened. To balance out the large negative spaces of color, I added a strip of small piecing in the upper left corner, and to balance that out, I added the four triangles in the bottom right corner. I would love to make this a bigger version as this only measures 39" x 42". The biggest crime and mistake I made with this quilt was not entering it to be judged at QuiltCon West. I only entered it. I still beat myself up about it, but the reason I didn't get it judged was because I felt that I would be critiqued harshly on my hand stitching. It's definitely not perfect, but I think that is what lends beautifully to the handmade look. It is handmade. I don't know why I ever listened to that little devil inside of me. Why 1981? This quilt is a dedication to my creative life and journey. I love making things, and I hope it shows. I had a few people say it reminds them of certain artists. Some I have never heard of like Charley Parker and Mondrian. Others, like Picasso, I do know. But none of these artists were in mind during the making of this. It literally was a sit down and draw, let's pull out some fabric, and let's-hope-for-the-best kind of quilt making. So it all worked out in my favor in the end, and I couldn't be more thankful. It makes me so happy when I look at it. :) xx nancy One year ago: Birchen Quilt top Two years ago: Crafty Travelers Series Three years ago: Creating with the Stars Four years ago: Fabric Birds I have a book!

This is a kit to make a mini quilt measuring 6” x 9.5”. Packaged in a plastic bag you will receive all the fabric to make the quilt along with a design sheet and detailed instructions. Fabrics may be different to those in the photo as fabric ranges come to an end. I always do my best to match as close as possible to the original design. You will need a fabric glue pen to complete the quilt and these are available on my shop or through other online retailers. This is a winter themed design with a large hare sitting in the moonlight using my technique of shadow appliqué and quilting where shapes are freely cut, glued to the background and then quilted with a layer of soft net over the top. It is a really fun and easy technique suitable for all levels of stitcher including beginners. You can see me demonstrate the technique on my Facebook page Julia’s Mini Quilts. This is a lovely quilt to make for your own use or as a gift for a friend. I hang my mini quilts at home in picture frames, stands or canvas boards.
