good day ~ leaves… leaves… leaves! always a fun, artistic motif to play with, especially this time of year. and i have a gorgeous view in my imagination!this is how it plays out: first, i hand-painted the leaves with silks acrylic glaze paints. and i added free motion quilting in two motifs, tiny stippling and miniature feathers. a bit of bobbin ... Summer was wonderful! We had lots of hot summer days spent in the pool and at the waterpark. We did some camping and got a zillion mosquito bites. But it went by quickly! Now the kids are back in school, the temperature is definitely cooler, and life is crazy... but more on that later. Right now I want to show you part of what kept me busy all summer long. One of my customers, Rinda, brought me five very different quilts. (Sadly, I only remembered to take pictures of four of the quilts). This was a great creative outlet for me since the quilts were all so different! The first quilt was done with the Pro-Stitcher. I love the preciseness of computerized quilting, but it's not always as easy as some might think. Just learning how to use the program takes time. And once you start the machine, you do have to babysit it. The bobbin thread eventually runs out and if you don't notice it right away, you have to reset the computer and requilt it. Some of the fancy machines will stop when the thread breaks or the bobbin thread runs out, which is a great feature to have! I used an Oak Leaf pattern on this quilt. I thought it fit with the fall colors of the quilt. The second quilt was my first experience with a Stack-and-Whack quilt. The fabric pattern and colors felt a bit Oriental to me. I thought it was absolutely beautiful! This is another quilt I probably would not have ever made before seeing it. That is why I am so grateful for the variety of my customer's quilts. The exposure is so good for me. It helps me step out of my comfort zone and see the beauty of variety! The third quilt is a fun snowman quilt. It was cute and easy to quilt. The last quilt I fell in love with. Why? Because I love quilts that create unique designs with the use of light and dark fabrics. I am a huge fan of Judi Madsen of Green Fairy Quilts, and have been wanting to try some ruler work like she does. I don't know if I came very close, but I was still pleased with this attempt. I designed the border using Art and Stitch and quilted it out using the Pro Stitcher. Rinda has actually moved away to Arizona, but I have a feeling we'll be in touch again. She's a great quilter and a great lady. I know I've said it before, but I feel like I'm so lucky to do what I do! I mean, seriously, when you hug your customers goodbye, you know you have a great job! :)
In my humble opinion, two key thoughts in doing overall quilting motifs on your quilts are: 1. The general even-ness in distance among motifs — that’s what gives the overall look. Eve…

I posted a block of this one, but now I"ve gotten permission to post the full quilt and all it's wonderful blooms. Denniele Bohannan from Louanna Mary Quilt Design made this incredible Blue Dot, Blue Dot Where are you, quilt designed by Barbara Brackman who has a free BOM - Hospital Sketches which you can find on facebook. This one is super sweet. Two layers of batting, Hobbs 80/20 and Hobbs Wool, I used a 60 wt Glide thread that just blended wonderfully with everything. Yep only one color of thread on this beauty. And Denniele won a Blue Ribbon at the Missouri State Fair, congrats Denniele!! Get cozy and get ready for some wonderful pics of this work of art. Thanks Denniele for letting me quilt for you! Make sure to stop by the linky parties on the side bar, there is so much inspiration out there. Next week I hope to share more stories of the care givers. Have a great week!
I'm needing a new design fix today! This design is based on Basic Spiral, but with little pointy ends like flames to make it Blazing Spiral:I read somewhere last year that Spirals are the new Stippling, which made me laugh at the whole fashionista sound of that. After all, gray is now the new white! But

I've been home 24 hours and what a whirlwind it has been! I am completely exhausted and to my friends overseas I have some incredible news to share - but that will be in "Part Two"! The Australasian Quilt Convention has been sensational for a number of reasons, not least of all that this year the event celebrated 10 fabulous years! Judy and Gary from Expertise Events have contributed enormously to quilting in Australia bringing overseas tutors 'down under' to share in their skills. We arrived Wednesday morning to deliver our quilts and then after a brief tutor meeting we discovered our lovely accommodation…… For copyright reasons I can't share many quilts as I haven't asked permission from the quilt makers. I do want to share these though as I am sure these friends will be okay with that! Each year a prestigious award is handed out - the Rajah Award (which you will hear more about in Part Two!!)…….anyway last year's recipient was the talented Jenny Bowker and a display of her incredible quilts was on display and sadly due to illness she was unable to be there.…… Amongst the many other displays were quilts from some of the tutors. There were 14 tutors from around the world with many and varied talents….. Again I have only shown images of those that I am able…….Gloria Loughman A very special friend and first time teacher at AQC Faye Packham…….. Julie Haddrick…….and the self portrait is incredibly lifelike!……. And yours truly!………. Between classes I popped down to see more including the "Best of the Best" quilts from each state of Australia and and I was glad to find one very proud quilter Michele (also spelt with one "L"!), from the Northern Territory. She was thrilled to bits that her quilt was selected and she informed me her beautiful quilt was made entirely of silk………..thanks Michele….. I also came across this quilt from my first book and beautifully made by Patricia also from NT……. One of our talented girls from home, Helen Campbell…….love it Helen……... Elizabeth Camping is also from home and creates very original and innovative pieces………. And South Australia shines again with Ming's intricately quilted work………... There is also the Best of Show winning quilts on display and this was the one from Janet Treen of New South Wales who eventually won Best of Australia. Well done Janet…your quilt is stunning…….. I met a very excited Pamela Brockwell with her "Best of Show" entry from Victoria…. Jenny Bowker was the winner from the Australian Capital Territory……. Jocelyn Leath represented Western Australia…..a clever portrait done in manipulated cheesecloth…... Pam Hill from Queensland and her entry……... I have been very lucky to represent South Australia on four occasions and my quilt was glad to be unfolded and off the shelf! It will travel until the end of the year so farewell my friend…… and for some reason I seem to be missing Tasmania and Northern Territory but you can see them here on the Bernina Australia site. Every year Expertise Events sets a challenge to quilters with a set criteria and size. This year the theme was TEN in recognition of the 10th year of AQC. Some of them can be seen here on the AQC website but I did take the liberty of photographing one of our very own quilters from home as her piece is just stunning. Ming's work is impeccable and there are 10 hidden cats in this whole cloth quilt made from a recycled tablecloth…….. The venue never disappoints …. it is the World Heritage listed Royal Exhibition Building and has a stunning interior…... Faye was so excited to be teaching for the very first time and her skill is in piecing especially encouraging beginners…………... and this is one of her shining stars who happened to turn sweet 16 on day three of four days with Faye! Well down Faye on nurturing another future quilter…….and to Skye and your beautiful Mum…it was so lovely to meet you both. We all hope this is the beginning of a long journey of quilt making (and thanks for my beautiful scarf too xxx). Skye managed to produce these two…yes TWO quilts tops at this one event - WOW!….. Well I didn't take too many photos in class but I did have to take this one of Anne……she read her instructions well as it told her to have everything labelled with her name….but glasses as well Anne??? Loved having you and everyone else……bless you all xxx So I will try to remain calm and gather my thoughts as I am about to type one of the the most incredible things that has ever happened to me in Part Two……...

Okay, so I am thrilled to finally share with you the final results of this beautiful quilt, Harriot. This is another masterpiece by Sue Cody and appliqued to perfection by Beth, you have seen some of her other work on here - most recently, Sweet Surrender. Beth is an amazing appliquer and I am thrilled to be able to work on her quilt tops. This time I wanted to share with you Beth's work. You can see in the picture above how small her stitches are and how precise the hand stitching is. I am still in awe of her work, so thrilled to have a part of it. I only used 1 layer of batting for this quilt top. It is going to hang on a wall, so no need for the double layer- plus, that was Beth's request. Whenever I am working with a lot of applique I have to free motion quilt from one side to the other, I work my way to the applique, stitch around it and then fill all around. You can see that if you look carefully at the picture above. Beth requested that I do a similar fill that I had done on a previous quilt of hers, you can see that here. I definitely added more detail and feathers in this quilt and I think the end result is fantastic. I used almost a full cone of 60wt Glide thread and over 13 Magna Glide Bobbins. I ended up needing my straight ruler for the diamond shapes and my purple disappearing marker for the diamonds as well, other than that - this quilting was all free-motion work on my A1 Elite Longarm. It is so fun to look at the applique and I really love the quilting in the background. It makes the applique look like it was placed on top. That is my ultimate goal when quilting with applique. If you look at the applique, you see all the fussy cutting that went on. Amazing! Also, I had a lot of fun with some of the flies. I made the quilting look like they were in motion. Fun close up. Here is another look at the flies in motion, I just love it! I really had fun quilting this top. I just love the texture of the quilt. I hope you are enjoying it as well. I can tell you that the pictures do not give this quilt justice. It is so beautiful in person. I look at this quilt with so much awe. The designer, Sue Cody is amazing - the appliquer, Beth is equally amazing in her skill and then I had the chance to quilt it. It takes 3 people to create a masterpiece and I am happy to be a part of it. And, the back! I couldn't share this finish without sharing the back of the quilt. It looks amazing with all that texture. Okay, so on to the next project! I have lots of fun ideas for new patterns that will come out later this year. So, stay tuned for my next quilting adventure!

Feather 1 is my go to feather! I learned this style years ago from Patsy Thompson DVDs Feather 2 I rarely stitch out... back tracking over previous stitching is tedious and boring for me.
