My self-imposed ban on blog reading and posting is over as Lent ends tonight. I was only posting finishes on my blog, since this is my way of keeping track of what I've done and, more importantly, when. I missed reading about everyone's quilting adventures, but it was good for me to stop for a bit. As with most of us, the mask making continues. In between making masks, I worked on this scrappy quilt using 2 1/2" squares. As those who follow me know, I do not enjoy making scrappy quilts and am not a huge fan of how they look, either. This quilt has been fun to make, though. I kind of used it as a leader/ender with the masks, but then just began sewing the blocks so it could move along. When cleaning my Hidey Hole, I found a bag of 2 1/2" squares I had cut several years ago. I dug into my hug bags of scraps and cut more, adding to the mix. Then the 16 patches were made. There are all kinds of fun things to find in this quilt... butterflies, crabs, fish, whales, flowers, basketballs, golf clubs and bags, snowmen, shells, the sun, etc. My favorite though is the fussy cut Snoopy in the photo above. :) At least two borders will be added; one of the cream and then another round of squares. I may add another round of cream after that, but we shall see. If I add another round of cream, I may use a scrappy binding. Needless to say, there are A LOT of 2 1/2" squares left. Maybe another scrappy quilt is in my future. ***Edit*** I have had several questions about the pattern for this quilt from No Reply Bloggers. I did not have a pattern for this quilt. The design just came to me as I went along making it. Now back to making masks! Happy Quilting! Be safe and be well.
Hello hello! I've been lucky enough to have had the chance to play with Tilda's new fabric range Harvest over the past few weeks. It's such a pretty collection of colours and prints and today's the day I get to share what I've been making as part of the Blog Hop 2 Green
Are you remembering to write 2017 yet? Are you still stunned to realize Christmas is behind us and Valentine’s Day is a month and 2 days away? I had such great plans for the Christmas holiday…
For the more traditional types, country quilts are the best to bring that homey, rustic feel to a room or furniture.
Another quilt finished! Almost two years ago I posted pictures of my Early Bird quilt top , and it’s hung in the closet ever since. Until last month, that is, when I summoned the courage to try an all over free motion quilting design on it. I actually quilted this quilt before quilting my On a Whim quilt , because [...]

Catalina loves Cats. That's why as soon as I saw this quilt pattern, I knew it was for her. It is titled Pins and Paws from the Missouri Star Quilt Company. There was some fun quilting on this quilt. I love pieced backs. It's also a good way to use up left over fabric. This backing idea is from Gyleen Fitzgerald. This is one of my favorite border quilting patterns. I love quilted straight lines. They add so much movement to a quilt. The whole quilt. Richard thought the quilting was odd, but I think it is very modern. As always, a label.
What a perfect name for this elegant quilt. The little four patch between the blocks gives the effect of hanging blooms. And the piecework in the border adds a lovely touch for this romantic quilt. The pattern includes instructions for: Throw 78in x 78in Twin 78 in x 97 1/2in Queen 97 1/2in x 97 1/2in

Sew a beautiful Chandelier Quilt Pattern with just 3 yards of fabric! This fabulous quilt design is so popular, but I couldn't find a single pattern for a 3 yard Chandelier quilt... until now! I had so much fun designing a Chandelier quilt for you that only takes 3 yards of fabric. This free quilt pattern makes a throw quilt that is approximately 48'' x 59'' with 8'' Chandelier quilt blocks.

This is Marg’s Sampler quilt which was a guild project from 2005 and I have quilted many of these quilts over the years. Marg asked for light custom quilting to highlight the piecing. I tried a double line piano key border which I really like to quilt as your mainly traveling in the outer edge and not in the inner border seam like with normal piano keys. Free hand curls in the sashing and lots of CC’s, loops and curls in the blocks. Quilters Dream Blend batting and So Fine thread.
There is nothing I like more than a simple quilt pattern that looks complicated. Behold .... the Jewel Box quilt. Shibori is a Japanese term for a method of dyeing cloth. Traditionally using Indigo, it is a form of tie-dyeing that goes back to the 8th century. This quilt block is called: Jewel Box I did not use a printed pattern - but by reading this post and the links below you will be able to master this :) Quilt Specs: The fabric: A fat quarter bundle of Shibori II from Moda. This collection designed by Debbie Maddy contains 20 different designs and I used all of them in this quilt. The 'background' fabric is Kona white. Note: If you are using pre-cuts like charm squares or a layer cake, do not starch or iron with steam - they will shrink. If you are using yardage for this project, feel free to starch and iron with steam. 1) Cut 5" x 5" squares from both the Shibori fabric and the Kona white: a TOTAL of (126) each. 2) Take (63) of the blue and (63) of the white squares and make (126) half square triangles. Use a scant 1/4" seam. Trim to an unfinished size: 4.5" x 4.5" A good tutorial for making HST's with charm squares is HERE from Scrapish. 3) Take (63) of the blue and (63) of the white squares and make (126) 4-patch units. See pix above. These should be unfinished at 4.5" x 4.5" Note: A good video tutorial on how to make 4-patches from 5" squares is HERE from Me and My Sister Designs. If you are using yardage (cut into 2.5" strips) - a video HERE from Missouri Star Quilt. Co. is helpful. Or, you just cut up 2.5" x 2.5" squares and a post HERE from Fabric406 explains this method. Assemble all your units the way shown above with the 4-patch focus fabric on the top left - and HST focus fabric - top right. That's it! Sew away and stack them up. I figured out my quilt size based on a 4" finished square. 14 squares across & 18 rows down = 56" wide x 72" long. NOTE ABOUT YARDAGE ... The yardage for THIS quilt in two colors would be exactly 2 yards of each. But since I would err on the side of caution with mistakes, pre-washing, squaring up and starch - I would get 2.5 yards of each to be SAFE ! Bonnie Hunter from Quiltville's Quips & Snips has a great chart for yardage if you choose to make this quilt with just two fabrics ... a light & a dark. Just figure out how large YOUR quilt will be - and go to the chart column for 5" squares. See the Jewel Box pattern emerge as you rotate these units and match up the triangles and the four patches. I made this diagram which explains the assembly in detail - the colors are not important. Two good links below are also helpful with instructions & pictures. *Make all your units (#1). *Take two units (#2) and rotate them so the focus fabric HST's are pointing out (#3) *Sew blocks together with 4-patches and triangles next to each other (#4 and #5). The backing is a beautiful midnight blue minky. Wavy line quilting was done with a walking foot in Aurifil 50wt. threads. Following the seams makes it super easy to quilt and creates cute little squares. More Links: 1) Shontelle from England Street Quilts has a great PDF and diagrams for a Jewel Box quilt here. While our assembly techniques are different (Shontelle stripped pieced her 4-patches, I made them from 5" squares) - her pattern guides are the best. 2) For some step by step pictures of Poppy's Jewel Box quilt, visit Cuckooblue. Thanks to everyone for their tutorials and for all those who left comments that corrected my horrible math skills. I'm away on a little road trip but I couldn't wait until I got home to share my latest finish! My lovely Aurifil threads! Hard to beat black and white binding! I'm trying to perfect the quilt swirl! These photos are taken outside Lakes Entrance, in the east of Victoria, in a region called Gippsland. I think the fold lines came from it sitting in the warm car on its little road trip! I like the way the hexie shapes highlight the lovely Heather Ross prints. There was a bit of wrangling getting those side triangles pieced in, requiring some 'y seams'..... and maybe a bit of unpicking! #**!! I'm not one to shy away from a challenge. Maybe you can see the double rows of quilting in this photo? These photos are taken in Metung, a beautiful fishing village long on my bucket list! I have tentatively named it Violet Crumble but I will finally decide when I get home to make a label. It's always nice to have a close-up of the backing and the binding... And here's a better photo of the quilting lines, 1/4" on either side of the hexagons. Is there anything nicer than taking a quilt with you on the road trip? This one certainly came in handy for afternoon naps after a long day of walking! I'm looking forward to getting home to start a new quilt! Happy sewing! Looking back on things, I chose the perfect time to make a scrappy quilt. Sewing together 2 1/2" squares in a somewhat random way is really mindless. I didn't have to concentrate on anything, really. I went back and forth on what to do with the borders of this quilt and after realizing that I didn't have enough of the white fabric to do what I had in mind, I decided to add three more rows of the scrappy squares. I love it!! There are so many fun fabrics in this quilt and some go way back to the beginning of my quilting days. There aren't many batiks or Christmas fabrics in the top. I've saved those fabrics for other things. It's a little bit of an "I Spy" quilt. Do you see golf balls, a sneaker, an orange, a pumpkin and a dreidel in the squares above? I need to get the backing ready and then get this quilted. I may do it myself by quilting a grid across it. This quilt top made a huge dent in my bucket of 2 1/2" squares! *****Edit**** I have had several questions about the pattern for this quilt from No Reply Bloggers. I did not have a pattern for this quilt. The design just came to me as I went along making it. Since we are all at home and not able to go out much, I've been cooking more. One of the things I have wanted to make for a long time is pasta. An order for pasta making attachments was put in and they were delivered last week. Easter Sunday Doodlebug and I made homemade fettuccuni with shrimp scampi. There are things I learned making pasta for the first time. One thing is that we will be doing it again!! Coronavirus Cooking. YUMM!! Happy Quilting! Be safe and be well.
