Catalina loves Cats. That's why as soon as I saw this quilt pattern, I knew it was for her. It is titled Pins and Paws from the Missouri Star Quilt Company. There was some fun quilting on this quilt. I love pieced backs. It's also a good way to use up left over fabric. This backing idea is from Gyleen Fitzgerald. This is one of my favorite border quilting patterns. I love quilted straight lines. They add so much movement to a quilt. The whole quilt. Richard thought the quilting was odd, but I think it is very modern. As always, a label.

UPD: After some people asked me for a pattern, I decided to share a free template for the dragon so you can make your own. You can find the link to the template and some tips here. No sun to be expected in the next couple of days, but I couldn't wait for a chance to take nice pics. I just had to hare this with you as soon as the sleeve was on it. She's going to my daughter's room and was already named Lily. Nice to meet you too. I've shown the beginnings of her when I wrote about the fun workshop Ruth of Charly and Ben's Crafty Corner taught at our branch of the Irish Patchwork Society. I made a point of finishing this quilt asap, but it did take me longer than I hoped. The wallhanging measures 30 by 51 in. This is the so-called ticker tape technique, of which you can find numerous beautiful examples on Pinterest. By using the black background I wanted to give some of the stained glass feel. The wings, which a rainbow of almost-solids look more like stained glass: Whereas the body, made of prints, does not really look that: As in this technique the scraps are attached to an assembled quilt sandwich, the quilting of the image part is done while stitching, which is handy. So the decision was to be made only about quilting the background. I rejected the most obvious idea of doing it in black on black and instead decided to add more colour with my beloved YLI variegated thread which I have already used for several quilts. Of course it means you can see all the mistakes and awkward turns, but I feel the bright curves give the quilt more of a fairy-tale look (or psychedelic look, if you like ;))) To add even more colour (and psychedelia) I used the brightest piece of fabric I possess for the binding. Funny how one corner turned out to be all blue. All in all it was a fun project, and it turned out more impressive than I could ever expect, thank you Ruth! Last week in the comments on one of the Bears in the Hills work-in-progress posts, someone asked if they could see it finished. How did I never post a photo of the finished piece? That's crazy! But it's true. :-P I shared it in the newsletter, but I never posted a photo here. So I'm

I finally finished a quilt!!! Do you remember this quilt top? I finished the top about a year ago. This summer I finally got the back put together, and sent it off to the local quilter. A week ago, I got it back and immediately got to work on the binding (it's my favorite part, eek!). On Saturday, I took it to my moms house (she will be fostering the quilt for me), and we got some quick pictures outside before the rain came in. The weather has started to cool here, and the trees are changing color. This is my favorite time of year, and its the time of year that I get excited to play with fabric again. I took another quilt in to the quilter, and hopefully I'll have that back in the next month or so. Until then I will keep working on piecing my long list of UFOs. It feels great to finish something, and even though this quilt won't be living with me, it was still nice to snuggle with it for a while. Do you snuggle with your quilts when you finish them? I feel like it's not really a quilt until it has kept someone warm. I hope everyone is having a great week! Cristina The Quilted Mitten

I'm away on a little road trip but I couldn't wait until I got home to share my latest finish! My lovely Aurifil threads! Hard to beat black and white binding! I'm trying to perfect the quilt swirl! These photos are taken outside Lakes Entrance, in the east of Victoria, in a region called Gippsland. I think the fold lines came from it sitting in the warm car on its little road trip! I like the way the hexie shapes highlight the lovely Heather Ross prints. There was a bit of wrangling getting those side triangles pieced in, requiring some 'y seams'..... and maybe a bit of unpicking! #**!! I'm not one to shy away from a challenge. Maybe you can see the double rows of quilting in this photo? These photos are taken in Metung, a beautiful fishing village long on my bucket list! I have tentatively named it Violet Crumble but I will finally decide when I get home to make a label. It's always nice to have a close-up of the backing and the binding... And here's a better photo of the quilting lines, 1/4" on either side of the hexagons. Is there anything nicer than taking a quilt with you on the road trip? This one certainly came in handy for afternoon naps after a long day of walking! I'm looking forward to getting home to start a new quilt! Happy sewing! Hi, all! How are your own personal scrap issues coming along? I have barely made a dent in my overflowing pile of scraps, but I do feel more encouraged by what I've done. I'm finding it's fun and I have so. many. ideas. rolling around in my head that I want to do! It seems like everywhere I look, I see another great thing to do with my scraps.... So I thought I'd share some of what I've found with you this week. Maybe it will inspire you too! *&*&*&*&*&*&* I love love love this scrappy flying geese quilt - the ones I've made in the past use a 6.5" rectangle and 3.5" squares for the corners, which might be large for some folks' scrap baskets, but you could reduce the size (4.5" rectangle and 2.5" squares) and achieve the same effect. This quilt was made by Dorthe, who blogs over at LaLaLa Patchwork - her site is in German, but there's lots of gorgeous eye candy there! And Staci, over at The Confused Quilter, is making this absolutely gorgeous version of Elizabeth Hartmann's Sparkle Punch quilt. Wouldn't it look fabulous scrappy? I am so inspired.... This beautiful Scrappy Chains quilt caught my eye - I can see this in a smaller block size, too, and I love the fact that it doesn't have a consistently colored chain. Truly scrappy! There is a video tutorial available for this quilt - click here to see it! And look at this beauty! What a great way to use up a rainbow of strips. It could be as small as a baby quilt, or go all the way up to king-size! It's also a great alternative to a traditional string block, if you want to do something a little "out of the box". And isn't this cute? It's the pattern I'm using currently for a couple of commission quilts, but it could easily turn into a scrap quilt - because don't we all have quite a few 2.5" strips left over from other projects? A sweet and simple alternative to a traditional jelly roll quilt too, for that jelly roll you've got sitting around that you bought because the fabric is just.so.pretty! This is a great rail fence quilt, which looks like it uses bricks and random squares. I haven't had a chance to graph this one out yet, but if I had to guess, I'd say it's 2.5" x 4.5" bricks and 2.5" squares in the darker zigs, and 2.5" squares in the light zags. Isn't this amazing? A great way to use up leftover strips of binding, I think! I save mine for scrappy quilts, but there are always times when the bin starts to overflow - and this would be a very different way to use those pieces! And here's another strippy block quilt, with a little twist - tiny block strips! I can see two ways to make this - one would be to use up all those tiny pieces of fabric you just can't bear to throw away, the other would be to make strip sets and cross-cut them to create those strips of tiny blocks. Either way, you're using up scraps! And is this not just the cutest quilt? I love the use of different prints in the same colors for these woven strips - simple, but it adds so much depth and interest to the quilt. 2.5" squares in colors and 4.5" white squares would make this quilt quickly! If you don't have time or energy to make a whole quilt, how about these adorable pincushions made by the queen of tiny scraps, AmandaJean of Crazy Mom Quilts? I love seeing her cheerful bowls full of pincushions, and her blog is a great resource for easy quilt ideas and beautiful scrap creations! Emily Bailey of Em's Scrap Bag has been sharing a lot of gorgeous scrap quilts on Facebook these days - and this is one of my favorites! Notice that the horizontal strings are repeats of one of the fabrics in the coin strips - it gives this quilt a great geometric effect. And the cross-hatch quilting is amazing! And speaking of Emily, have you signed up to participate in the Hands2Help Charity Quilt Challenge 2016 yet? Emily collects quilts for Quilty Hugs For Happy Chemo, and that's just one of the charities we are spotlighting this year. There's also Covered in Love, spearheaded by Kat Drinkwater, who collects quilts for terminally ill patients in Tyler, Texas. And for our Canadian quilters (and anyone else who wants to send a quilt to the frozen North) there's the Yukon Women's Transition Home, which serves women and children escaping from abusive home situations. The Challenge runs until the end of May, so you've got plenty of time to dig through your scraps and make a beautiful quilt to wrap someone in love. I hope you'll consider joining in if you haven't already! You can sign up by clicking the link in this paragraph for the Challenge and scrolling down to the entry form, or just fill in the entry form in the top right sidebar! *&*&*&*&*&*&*& Are you feeling inspired now? I am! Can't wait to get back to my scrap bin and see what comes out of it next! Let's go scrap!! Hugs! Sarah PS - remember next week is our first linky party to show off our scrappy progress - I hope you'll all link up and share! No matter how much or how little, progress is progress, and a little encouragement goes a long way! And for those of you who just wish you had scraps to play with, I'll have something especially for you!!
Happy New Year! Despite the long pause in postings, I did actually complete a few more sewing projects in 2014. January 2014 - Drawstring book bags for Allie and Cate's birthdays February 2014 - Robert Hughes baby quilt (I really need to consider taking a "how to photograph your quilts" workshop:) quilted with stars and spirals May 2014 - Amy Becker's HS graduation lap quilt Amy picked out fabrics at Fabric Depot during her Portland visit, Christmas 2013. I supplemented with a few fabrics I found at The Stitching Post and at Kapaia Stitchery during a trip to Kauai (always looking for an excuse to fabric shop). The blue batik with butterflies was the first fabric Amy chose. Other colors were built around that. quilted with vining flowers and leaves Now Amy has this nice warm lap quilt - perfect for her college years at the University of Arizona in Tucson. She assures me that it does get cold there, especially when the air conditioner is running. November 2014 - New curtains and duvet set for the Sisters house After 20 years, Stefanie and I decided it was time for a change in the upstairs bedroom in our Sisters house. We found some curtain fabric at IKEA (seen below in the medium-sized pillows). After a futile search for a coordinating duvet cover I decided we just needed to make our own. Not as cheap, but so much more fun! On the bed in Anna's old room at our house (tempted to keep it here, but...) Had to add a border piece as it was just a bit too small. Found a fun coordinating fabric at The Stitching' Post. Shams and throw pillows. The quilting in the shams mimics the print in the curtain fabric. All set up in its new home. On to 2015... January 2015 - Jeanne's lap quilt This quilt was made for my good friend and fellow swimmer, Jeanne. She will be out of the water for a bit, recuperating from surgery, so of course this called for a quilt! My daughter, Anna, suggested the colors - perfect for a swimmer. Another swimmer friend, Jenn, joined me for a shopping trip to Fabric Depot and also helped with part of the sewing. Sandi and Jeanne The design incorporates over 60 small blocks with names of some of Jeanne's friends. Next Up???? cityscape art quilt based on a photo of Roussillon, France art quilt based on our Croatia travels last September flower/plant themed art quilt for the Hardy Plant Society Hortlandia Plant Sale in April hopefully taking Hilde Morin's Bowl Art class

with needle and thread. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for my mom. Every day she has radiation, she is fitted with a mask almost exactly like this and bolted to the table under the radiation machine. The mask was made of moldable plastic and formed to her skull and shoulders. I have to tell you how stunned I was when I saw them pull her mask out of the cupboard and then watched them put her on the table and tighten the bolts. She is my hero! Last week for therapy, I gathered up some of my favorite blue scraps. I'm currently in the process of changing all of our 18 year old, seen two houses décor for the living room into coastal shades of blue, green and tan with splashes of beach finds here and there. Pinterest Board So many of our happiest memories as a family are at the beach. I wanted to capture some of those feelings and remembrances and bring them into our daily lives. Pinterest I have always liked the look of this Stacked Blocked pattern and decided to make a new coffee table topper to help make the room feel more "beachey". Pretty straight forward stitching. Using some white scraps, I just started cutting the blues into different lengths, none larger than about 7" and attached white strips to each side. On the machine for some FMQing and.... here it is! Finished and already brightening the room! Love! Love! Love! I used an oceany blue fabric from Joann's for backing and some of Kaffe Fassett's stripes in luscious blues for the binding. Here are some other projects I've crocheted and sewn to help redo the room: Removing border and repainting comes next. I'm waiting for warmer weather so I can have windows open while I paint since the smell seems to linger a long time in this house. In the meantime, I'm still making Granny Square blocks and putting together Churn Dash blocks for a second quilt for the bunk beds in Ben's room. Sewing is such a peaceful, creative process for me. I've learned I like the puttering and putzing of making a quilt more than the idea of setting out to make a quilt and finishing it asap. Choosing fabrics, appreciating the colors and feel. The tactile pleasure of measuring and cutting. Contemplating where a block might go in the overall pattern. Pressing. It centers me. Calms my fearful thoughts and worriful murmurings. Hope you get a chance to sew some this week. i have to say quilt story freshly pieced my quilt infatuation & crazy mom quilts
