The description card reads, "Crazy Quilt 1883-1893 Silk, cotton, wool, and linen, pieced and embroidered with silk and cotton threads Crazy quilts, which emerged after 1850, were usually composed of small, irregular-shaped fragments of silk, wool, and other fragments pieced together. The seams were then embroidered using a variety of stitches. They acquired the name “crazy quilts” because of the strong colors and busy, confusing nature of their designs, typical of Victorian taste."
You don't really see the beauty of this c. 1930 quilt until you capture it with a photo. I think it sparkles with the light and dark fabric. Feedsack like, not a feedsack expert. Not a four patch or nine patch. Just random two inch squares. It is a very utilitarian quilt. Don't think I have ever seen this straight line quilting before. Looks like maybe they used a yardstick and drew lines on the back. Needs a day at the spa. But otherwise in pretty good shape.
Sometimes when I get an obsession is comes out of left field and hits hard. This is the case with my current love affair with antique quilts. I've always liked them, and have a couple of nice examples, but all of a sudden a few days ago I realized I really really want to collect them, in a big way. First, they're very useful- you never know when you'll need an extra blanket. Secondly, they're gorgeous and each one is unique. Finally, how can you deny the amazing craftsmanship and hours upon hours of labor that each one took to make. They're one of the most overlooked areas of folk art. Let's look at some pretty ones now! I'm currently crushing on this one on ebay A cozy little entryway with antique blue and white quilts here I absolutely love this bright stack of beautiful quilts casually leaning on a cheerful floral armchair An outstanding example with all the bells and whistles! Antique stoneware bowls, brightly painted cupboards, and antique quilts- A country dream come true! A spectacular example in greens, and oranges. Look at all that quilting! This little vignette is pretty as can be, but be cautious of displaying your antique textiles near windows. You'd be surprised how fast a little sun can steal away their color forever. A stunning staircase displays an impressive collection of quilts, blue apothecary bottles, and decoys. Utterly charming! This welcoming room, rendered in multiple shades of faded pastel is made all the more lovely with the hanging quilt display on the wall! I would love to display antique quilts on my upstairs bannister except that 1. we still don't have an upstairs bannister, and 2. my cats would consider is a personal invitation to rip them to shreds.

The computer catalog of their quilts is a good place to start and we spent a long time looking up our friends and favorite quilters to see what works were there. We wrote down the catalog numbers and the next day, some of the quilts were presented on the tables in the viewing room you saw in the last post about the Quilt House. This is by one of my authors, M. Joan Lintault from NY. It is one that isn’t in her book so I was excited to see it. It is a printed design on the fabric and then quilted. Just spectacular detail in the leaf designs and the colors are beautiful. Here is the Libby Lehman they own. One of her ribbon play quilts with vibrant colors after all these years! Of course, Libby is on everyone’s mind in the Quilt world and we are hoping for a complete recovery so we can see more of her work! Goats by Ruth McDowell. ONe of my friends owns a large horse piece by her so I had to see what the museum had. I regret not taking a class with her! These beautiful full quilt shots were generously provided to me by the museum. Any that are odd or badly lit were ones that I took. I couldn’t get an angle to shoot some and of course didn’t have ideal lighting so it’s the best that I could do under the circumstances. Some of the quilts that are filed flat are ones that have embellishments so can’t be folded into boxes or are too delicate. For example, this is a crazy quilt made famous by being on the cover of a Penny Mc Morris book. This embroidered bedcover from 1710-1730 has lots of gold thread, very heavy and intricate. The center medallion is a bed of gold thread and I think the base fabric is silk. As a contrast, this white wholecloth quilt from 1750-1800, France, is just fantastic free motion quilting! It’s over 5 ft so just close ups here. This is a Mughal ‘floor’ quilt from the first half of the 18th century and is silk with silk embroidery, wood-block cotton print on the reverse side. The embroidery is tiny here and amazing! I wonder if it was truly for a floor or a repro of an image on a floor? The vibrant colors of this silk were a standout and I could study this for hours. It is one of the 3 quilts that I found inspirational because of the small pieces used in the quilts. I’d like to try creating with tiny pieces. Here are the other two below. Detail in the Gallery. Pieces were about half inch at the smallest center. Made by Bertha Neiden in Lincoln, NE about 1910 of wool and probably wool scraps from clothing! Wool and felt pieced by hand! It reminds me of many gameboards all together! More photos coming in future blog posts!

I have found myself collecting vintage quilt tops with the intention of quilting them. I must have about eight quilt tops and to date had only quilted one of them. As a result, I decided that I really needed to get one quilted to justify adding further quilt tops to my collection. I quilted the following gorgeous 1930's Le Moyne Star quilt which I purchased in Houston in 2011 for a mere $82USD. The quilt measures about 68 inches square. Here is a section of the quilt before quilting:- I designed the quilting on my recently purchased Wacom Cintiq Tablet. I love that you can preview quilting designs onto images of the quilt. This was my quilting design - the final quilting only varies slightly from the original design. I was thrilled with the final result - I love the secondary design which has been created by the quilting lines. Some better close-ups of the quilting:- And a single block:- That is one quilt top down ... at least 7 to go.

Since I'm in the middle of quilting and really have nothing new to show, I thought I'd post a couple of pictures of my favorite quilt from the Aurora Colony quilt show last October. Something about this quilt just calls my name. Here's a close up. I have the orange, red, and background fabrics. I still have to find the green. I'm thinking of using something from my homespun box but I haven't given up on finding something close to the original. I also have to decide on a size and draft it. But first, I have to finish the project I'm quilting.
