Photo by Larry Sefton I'm pretty sure this is the photo they used but I don't have a copy of the magazine yet. Two people have sent me photos of the page in the magazine. The back story on this quilt: I made the quilt top in 2007. In 2010 Julie Sefton contacted me and wondered if it was for sale. We agreed on a price and I sent it to her. She had it quilted beautifully by Chris Ballard. In March this year I was contacted by Joen Wolfrom to see if she could use a photo of it in an article she was writing for "The Quilt Life", the magazine created by Ricky Tims and Alex Anderson and published by Meredith Schroeder (AQS). I contacted Julie and asked if she could take some photos since the only one I had was before it was quilted. Her husband Larry has quite a set up for taking photos so he was up for the task. They sent me copies of all of the photos that they submitted. Here is a photo of the page in the magazine that Julie took with her phone so I could see it. If you don't know who Joen Wolfrom is, she is the ultimate expert on color and design and using it in quilts. I have used her books in my classes many times as a reference for use of color, value, etc. I have most of Joen's books and actually met her many years ago at our quilt guild. One of my books (Landscapes & Illusions 1990) is autographed. Joen's newest book was released this year. I'll do a review of the new book tomorrow so this post won't get too long.

I made this church banner for a friend to gift to her church in 2015. It is approximately 69" x 93" and is all batik fabrics. I used Hobbs Thermore batting in it to keep it lightweight. Click here to see a photo of it hanging in the church. 21" finished colorwash. I used 2" squares to make it in 2015. 28" colorwash made with 2.5" squares. I made the top before 2007 and used it as a class sample for years. Then in 2015 I finally quilted and finished it. This little 19" colorwash is a mix of regular quilting cottons and batiks and was made in 2015. All batik rectanges 2.5" x 4.5". I made it in June, 2007. It is 45" x 63.5". It is in the Julie and Larry Sefton Collection and was featured in the October 2014 issue of "Quilt Life". Bright Colorwash 1 - 43" x 56" Finished in 2012 Bright Colorwash 2 39.5" x 50.5" Finished in 2013 Bright colorwash made with rectangles 2" x 4" finished in 2015. Sold as a quilt top in 2015. Batik Colorwash 50.5" x 38.5". Finished in 2012 Batik Colorwash 2 - 38.5" x 38.5". Finished in 2012 Batik colorwash made in 2015 with rectangles that finish at 2" x 4". It is approximately 44" x 68". African Colorwash - 20" x 23.75". Finished in 2013 I made this piece in Feb. 2008. It is 19" x 23.5" I had the quilt top on my design wall for about 8 years. I finally finished it in Feb. 2008. It is 20" square. Colorwash bars, designed and pieced in 1995 and quilted many years later. My first colorwash pieces were made with calico type fabrics and from there I went to multicolor busy floral prints of a little larger size. This is one of my earliest pieces made with 1.5" squares that finish at 1". It is 12.75" square. This is another early piece, also with squares finishing at 1". It is 16.5" square. I sold this piece so I can't measure it but i think it is about 25" square. If you go back to this post you will see how I store the squares for working on this type of quilt. I challenged myself to go one step farther with this colorwash and add applique to it. I liked it before I added the triangles and I like it afterwards so I'm not sure what I learned there. This piece is 36" x 37". This piece was one of the first colorwash pieces that I made. I believe it was in January of 1991. It was accepted in the AQS show in 1992. It is 49" square. I entered this quilt in the local county fair quite a few years ago and it won the Best Quilt purple ribbon. It is a Colorwash Trip Around the World. This heart colorwash quilt was made with a strip pieced method of constructing 13 stratas to create the 13 rows in the hearts and then sliced to make 24 identical blocks. I gave this quilt to one of my nieces.

I think this watercolor seminole was a kit which she bought on a trip to Sisters. I have seen this pattern in a catalog fairly recently, but I don't know the name of it.

I finished the floral colorwash that ended up just a little bit under 24" square. I thought this was the perfect back for it. The binding is a dark green with little shots of many colors that are in the wallhanging. In the outdoor scene my Red Penstemon (Beardtongue) is blooming. The blooms are the very palest pink. Down in front of them at the bottom left are Balloon flowers competing for space. They will be periwinkle and pale pink when they bloom. There are lots of buds so a lot more blooming to take place.

Life is on overdrive these days. Just when I think I have caught up on things and have a little breather, something else arises that needs my attention. How did I become so busy in my retirement years?! Oh, I know the answer "quilting, quilting and a little more quilting." Many Most of my activities are related to quilting - teaching beginner quiltmaking; writing for American Quilter magazine; leading the Central Florida MQG; making blocks for a bee; and making quilts: one more to finish (Bloom) for the September 26, 27, and 28 Quilt Fest of Jacksonville; and two quilts to finish as gifts. Top that with being notified that Lifelong Learning College classes for winter term (January through June) are being scheduled so I need to choose dates, and it's enough to think I just might be a little overcommitted. What can I do? Resolve to carry on! Pictures I'm sharing here are of a quilt made in 2001. You might be thinking, "old news," but this is a quilt I've never blogged about - "So What's Your Point?" It's already on it's way to Ohio, a gift for my cousin's youngest son - that would be my first cousin once removed - and his new bride. Though the quilt is 12 years old, it's never been used except to lay across a bed that no one slept in. Besides, with dozens of quilts in our closet, and living in a climate that seldom calls for a quilt, it just makes sense to give it a good home. "So What's Your Point?" is the result of a tumbler swap with my friend in Switzerland, Edith. I chose to arrange my tumblers in this colorwash manner. So What's Your Point? 73" X 94" It's one of the earlier quilts in my free motion quilting experience, with all quilting accomplished by "bobbin quilting." With this method, a decorative thread is wound on the bobbin, and quilted with the back side of the quilt facing up. That way, instead of trying to get thick decorative thread through the eye of the machine needle, threads perform better through the bobbin. I used a variety of threads - metallic, rayon, perle cotton - in different areas, wherever I quilted a different design. Quilting designs include pebbles, swirls, echos, waves, leaves, petals... some of which can be seen better from the back. An obligatory photo of the back reveals a very blah backing. Whatever possessed me to buy such dull-looking fabrics?! They must have been on sale. This past week found me on a label-making binge. It's so much more economical to print out a whole sheet of Printed Treasures labels at once, than figure out how to get small pieces through the inkjet printer. 73" X 94" I'll admit that it was somewhat difficult to box up this quilt and send it on its way. But I'm reminding myself that I have about a hundred more where this one came from! And, hopefully Matt and Celine will enjoy and appreciate it, especially during quiet winter evenings at home. Linda
It's a quilt top! It ended up 36" x 45". I used some wild and weird batik in this colorwash and a lot of the pieces are from 20 years ago. The center is more blendy in person than in a photo. My small Narcissus flowers are just ending their blooming season. I had a lot more flowers than I normally do. My peonies are bigger and bushier and have more buds than usual this year too. I guess that means they all liked the long winter and cold spring.

Hello! I've been away from my computer because it has been a very busy summer! I have been crafting and sewing though! Look for more posts this week. First, I want to share with you my newest project. A Floral Colorwash Wall Hanging. I very much enjoy Wanda's creativity over at Exuberant Color. She was selling some colorwash kits so I bought a couple! After our AC broke and a few other household catastrophes I thought the best way to cope was to try and make something with my new fun squares! First I tried light in the center and dark around the edges. Each of the four corners were becoming different colors and becoming darker. I did blue/green, purple, pink/red, and yellow/orange. It was cool, however I wasn't liking it that much. Then I tried to make one similar to this one. I love it! It's definitely not done or perfect, but I put it up on the wall and I'm going to change some things around. Eventually I'll sew it together... maybe... someday..... will I ever let myself stop moving squares? Only time will tell! I started with it on my table. Then later I moved it to the wall. I needed a better view. Even as I'm looking at these pictures I can see some of the squares aren't where they should be. I think I went 'light' too soon. A few squares are definitely sticking out to me. It needs to be darker/colorful for a few more diagonal rows. I couldn't find my white flannel "design wall" so I used yellow. Of course, after I got all the squares up on the wall I found my white one.... oh well! I guess it's not too bad for a first try and no 'color training'. What is your favorite way to figure out value? I tried squinting and also placing some squares with my glasses off! =)
My favorite, the colorwash quilt that we got to take home as Josh's mom gave one to each kid. (Josh let me pick) Do you see the raised flowers and the butterflies?
I started a colorwash with rectangle shapes to talk about on my last live session Thursday. I still need to fill in with squares at tops and bottoms of rows. It rained part of the day yesterday and I ignored the damaged garden and continued playing. By 11 p.m. I had all of the rectangles filled in and now I'll get the squares and fill in. It could use one more vertical row on the left side so I'll consider that today. It will lose 8.5" in width when sewn and 6" in length. I'll probably change some pieces before I sew it. I was just walking through the kitchen when I saw the opossum strolling through the back yard. He didn't stay long, he was on a mission. I took this photo of the Columbine buds the day before the hail storm They weren't damaged. This photo was taken that same evening and I think they are OK too. Coral bells and Veronica.

I am lagging way behind on my finishing this year. Last night I finally quilted this cool color colorwash wallhanging. Now I need to trim it and choose a binding fabric. Since this one has regular quilting cottons, batiks, African, and Kaffe Fassett fabrics I don't really have to put a batik binding on it. It is so much easier to hand stitch regular quilting cottons than batiks.
I have all of my Kaffe Fassett fabric in matching bins and I needed one more. I emptied out the trays with the floral fabric squares that were in one of them. I figured I might as well play on a design wall while doing it. I have some tweaking to do but I always do that over a couple days after I have the initial design up on the wall.
