It stinks having to repaint furniture, but this time I chose Rustoleum Chalked Paint in Charcoal for a stunning industrial chic look. What do you think?
A few weeks back I was chatting with Lori about our upcoming Junk Bonanza booth. She mentioned that we would need some sort of checkout counter, something we could stand at to write up receipts. Pr…
You may have seen a similar cabinet on Pinterest. Like me, you may have even pinned it. Twice. And you might have also thought, "I NEED that." Of course, radio cabinets aren't all that easy to come by, but when you do find one on Craigslist. In your town. You BUY it! And then you paint it RED. Okay, so that's what happened. One dark and stormy night, the ever-beleaguered Hubby went out and brought home this bad boy: an antique wood radio cabinet. I seriously thought about painting it white. "White goes with everyone's décor," I said. But my daughter convinced me to go for the red. "Not too many people can fit red into their house," I said. "Yes," she answered, "but that means the ones who can will be REALLY excited to find something in red." Okay! Here's a quick rundown of the process. First, Hubby removed the fabric "speaker" in the front. Then I sanded a few of the rough spots. Not enough, though. After I painted, some of the dents showed through, but we'll call that "character." Then I primed it with Zinsser primer. This step may or may not have been necessary. I was going for a bit heavier distressing than usual, so I could have probably gone without the primer. Then I painted the whole piece red. (Acrylic craft paint, Walmart craft section.) After that, I sanded it with a sanding block. The red was a tad on the orangey side, but I didn't mind because I knew I'd be going over it with a dark stain, which is the last process: to brush on stain and wipe it off. The stain helps bring out the sanded wood, essentially staining it again. It also adds depth and a little shine to the piece while giving it a layer of protection. I really love how she turned out! Once again, I wish I had a bigger house, because I'd keep this one! Alas, it is moving on to greener pastures.
Remember the gutted, legless radio cabinet that I snagged at the White Bear Lake Trash to Treasure Day? It’s sitting on top of the sewing table at the back. Here is a close up. It is not mad…
A repurposed vintage radio cabinet is transformed into creative storage for throw blankets and books. Chalk paint makes this a very easy project!
A vintage radio cabinet is completely transformed using simple aqua latex paint and some stain.
Last year a neighbor, who was moving, gave me this vintage radio cabinet. The guts had been removed before she purchased it, but she had plans to use it as a decorative shelf/cabinet. She never had the time, so she gifted the piece to me (thank you Karen!). And as well all know, kids/work/home/life can take over, and the neglected radio cabinet sat in my garage for nearly 6 months before I finally put some paint on her! But here she is all prettied up! I painted her with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Provence, and sealed with clear soft wax. Dark wax gave it some aging, while fresh fabric now livens up the area where the speaker used to be. I also stripped and restained the top in a dark walnut, and wiped on some poly for protection. Wouldn't it be a great conversation piece in your entertainment area/basement? The back is open, and there's a piece of wood inside that would work as a shelf for your I-Pod dock. You could hide your player inside and little would anyone know that the music coming out is from your I-Pod! Ahh, it would be a marriage of today's technology with yesteryear's beauty!

White paint and a little, or a lot, of distressing is my favorite furniture finish. Distressing paint is really easy and adds character to the piece.

Is it Happy Hour yet? Just kidding! I shouldn't drink when I'm DIYing! But check this out... This old 1930's Sears Roebuck, AM...
I'm working hard, you're working too - we do it every day For every minute I have to work - I need a minute of play Day in day out all week long - things go better with rock.... This radio however, had played it's last song. Have you ever heard that song by Autograph,Turn Up The Radio? It's from way back in 1984 when bands had great big hair. Egads - 1984 was a long time ago... 30 years! Wow, someone is getting old around the Ranch. No matter the age of that person, for sure things still go better with music. This radio is an oldie too, and I'm pretty sure when it was cranking out the tunes there was no rock and roll blaring from the speaker. The veneer was peeled pitted and chipping away, but Maison Blanche Vintage Furniture paint came to the rescue. It had no guts when it became mine. So I gave it back a bit of its glory days. A couple summers ago I picked up two vintage radios for a total of $12 bucks. One actually works, which my husband claimed. Then idea and opportunity collided. Opportunity in the way of Maison Blanche shipping out some of their creamy smooth no prep paint for me to dip my brush in, compliments of the company. And then the idea part..... It's got a little shelf in the front to hold stuff & junk #2 son bought a house a month ago and you know how bachelor pads can be. When I saw sheer lime green and orange curtain panels pass through from a UPS delivery, I thought it needed a woman's touch, but the trouble is, he really hasn't asked me. Probably because he doesn't think of me as a woman, I'm just mom, and orange and lime are not in my decorating palette, so what fun could I possibly be? Well back in the day.... I turned up the radio. Not one quite this old though. This radio is rocking now, sporting Maison Blanche navy paint with ivory song lyrics. I wanted to paint him a dresser to use as an entertainment center.... "uuuhh, no I really don't need one". OK. Next time he came over I inquired.... can I paint you a side table? "uuhhh, I don't really need one right now, maybe when I get a couch". Ok. Third time was a charm.... I have this old radio I want to turn into something for you, is that ok? His reply.... "You REALLY want to make something for me don't you... anything would be fine I don't have much". No schmidt Sherlock, that's why I keep asking what I can make! So besides a wife - to give that woman's touch to his decorating - what else does a handsome 25 year old need? A maid, cook and gardener. Along with a secretary. And a vintage radio bar of course. Navy is one of the new Maison Blanche Paint Company's colors, and it's a match to the ticking fabric in my cedar porch. A perfect dark denim navy color. Yes I contemplated if I was the one who needed a bar in the cedar porch, however I have plenty of furniture. And bars.... To see my dresser bar, click here I wanted his bar to be sort of cool since I'm sure his friends are going to ask where he got the cabinet to house the liquor. The answer "my mom" will be uttered, and his friends will forever connect his frumpy middle aged mom to his cool bar. The mom in me also contemplated making it a cookies and milk bar. Reality.... he probably only eats cookies with milk at my house. But then again..... Daytime, nighttime, anytime.... Things go better with rock. Even milk and cookies. Please check out the other blogs and see four more projects created with Maison Blanche Navy paint....... Doreen from Hymns and Verses Refresh Restyle with Debbie Shayna from The Wood Grain Cottage Karin of Art is Beauty Bliss at Bliss Ranch Guided in product technique by: Shannon at Fox Hollow Cottage. The details: Sanded the veneer, added a new shelf in the back and a panel in the front to hold napkins, cuz guys drinking beer always use napkins right? Spray painted the spindles and front plate silver. Found old knobs in the garage and sprayed them too, then added some old wheels to the bottom. Gave the top a coat of dark stain, and refreshed the middle veneer. Painted an under coat of Maison Blanche Ivory, and two coats of Maison Blanche Navy. Because I'm impatient I stuck my letters on before the paint was dry, and when I pulled them off some of the ivory came off too. BONUS! Got the chippy look without sanding hard! Distressed through the navy in a few spots to give it a worn look like a pair of jeans. The last thing I did was rub the whole thing down with stain, it gives it an aged look and blends the white in for a vintage feel.
