The Five Kernels of Corn is about counting your blessings. It is a wonderful Thanksgiving tradition. Read the story then invite family and friends to share why each person is grateful at Thanksgiving.
I finally discovered how to unlock my student's motivation and helped them become experts at skip counting in kindergarten overnight.

I love this activity because it combines number recognition with a fun fall art project. Paint by number is a great way to work on this skill with preschoolers.
I'm falling behind on my Halloween crafts, so I have to combine a few in one post. I'll try to keep it short! Back when we made scarecrow silhouettes, I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to make them with sunsets or full moons as the background. I finally realized that I should save the full moon for a Halloween craft. But this ended up being more of a fall craft. Anyway, I drew a big circle on white paper, making it the size of a coffee filter. Then I squirted white and yellow paint in the middle of it and the kids mixed it up and spread it around the circle. Then I placed a coffee filter right on top of it and the kids pressed down a bit. (Sorry about the ghostly hands!) After only a minute or two, I peeled it off. This gave the moons a little texture, which didn't really show up on camera, but it was there! When they were dry I cut them out and glued them to a piece of black paper. The kids painted trees and hills and anything else they wanted onto their paper. I had also used a stencil and cut out some bats, cats and owls for them to glue on. The black paint made the moon curl up a bit, as well as the black paper itself. I just used some double stick tape under the moon edges and then flattened the whole thing between two heavy filing containers. Earlier in the week we made spinning ghosts to hang in our room. I drew a very simple ghost pattern onto white paper and gave it a long "tail." I cut out the ghost part because I knew that would be difficult for my kids to do themselves. So all they had to do was cut out the rest of the tail and draw in a face on both sides. Last week we made spider rings. I got the idea from Fantastic Fun and Learning so go there for directions. We made the small ones and only used one pom pom. I hot glued the pom pom on, but the kids used tacky glue to add the wiggle eyes. They LOVED them! We also went on a field trip last week and picked out a pumpkin for our classroom. The kids painted it black, green and purple and then we made it into a spider. We glued on 8 wiggle eyes and two fangs cut from a small paper plate. I used large pipe cleaners for the legs and stuck them right into the pumpkin. I must have been on a spider kick because over the weekend my daughter and I made a garbage bag spider. She was a really good helper when it came to filling the bags with leaves! I used electrical tape to tape the two bags together, glue dots to attach the wiggle eyes (I decided to just do 4 since not all spiders have 8 eyes), made the fangs from a paper plate again, and used JUMBO pipe cleaners for the legs. I used electrical tape to attach the legs as well. It now sits in the bare spot where all my roses used to be, waiting to greet trick-or-treaters! I don't know if he's weather-proof, but luckily it's been a dry week and the legs are holding up just fine. I did use a few tent stakes to keep some of the legs in place, but even those without a stake are still standing. Yay!
This year we will detour into My Father's World Exploring Countries & Cultures. I've been known around here to spend a little too much time in office supply stores buying supplies. It didn't take too long to organize this guide. Fortunately MFW provides student notebook pages. I did print off other things that many generous MFW moms had made. This is how I put it all together: This is my shiny new guide, the student notebook, and my master schedule. As folks around here know, I'm always pushing these Staples Better Binders. They are so worth the money! These things are indestructible. I've never had to throw one away. You can recycle your old binders at Staples and get $2 back for each one. That helps the cost some at least. They go on sale during back to school time, so grab them then, or you'll go broke! I bought the 1 1/2 inch size for the student notebook. At the beginning of each week I take out the pages that will be used and put them all on a clip board. These binders are too big to work out of, but they make a nice place to store everything in one place. Another thing I love over at Staples is their Better Dividers. Again, these things last forever. I always recycle the ones I used from previous years. I love that there are printable labels to use. You can find that template here. I've divided the binder into these sections: Memory Verses World North America South America Europe Africa Asia Australia Antarctica Bible Copywork Hero Tales Geography Vocabulary Geography Game Fast Facts I included the memory verses in the first section. The next tab has all of the pre and post test world geography pages, and anything else that doesn't belong in the continent sections. I pre-printed all A Trip Around the World Pages, and Another Trip Around the World Pages and included them in each continent section, so we won't have to do that in the future. This is the North America section. South America Europe Africa Asia Australia Antarctica I'm so thankful for the creator of the blog Mama Jenn. She created these great Bible copywork pages. She also made Hero Tales copywork pages. I like that there is a place to draw a picture. Additionally she made geography vocabulary pages. All of these activities are scheduled in the MFW guide. The next section holds the Geography game pieces, though I may take these out to put in the binder I keep mine in. The last section holds the Fast Facts drill sheets. We will probably not use these as much as CLE already has daily math drills. I laminated the Geography Game instructions, boards, and game pieces. I 3 hole punched them and put them in the binder. This binder also holds the Currency Kit conversion pages. I laminated all of the game pieces and separated them by continent. The new Currency Kit did not come cut out. This literally took (hours.) I chose not to laminate the pieces as I will not be using this guide again in the future. Even if I were, I'm not sure I would have. It took long enough! This is my master schedule. I like having an official record that includes all the things we do. I bound it with my fancy new ProClick Binding Machine! If you'd like a cover for your teacher resources, mine is here. I keep attendance and field trip logs in the front. This is our official attendance sheet for the year. This is where we will keep a log of the field trips we take. There will be plenty of fun things we will get to do with this guide! We're going to have lots of fun! I look forward to getting to know you MFW ladies. I have a whole lot to learn about this new guide. I hope to learn from your successes, and maybe I will be able to share some of mine. We start school in 4 weeks! See you soon!

Help kids understand what responsibility is with a definition in simple words, with examples that explain being responible, taking responsibility, accepting consequences.
Before I get to the art project today, I wanted to update you on my job situation. If you were reading this blog back in May, you know I left the center I was teaching at and stayed home with my daughter for the summer. At the end of the summer, as I applied for new positions, I realized I didn't want to teach in a center anymore. So I became a nanny for a wonderful family instead. They have a 3-year-old daughter and an 18-month-old son. My daughter is 2-and-a-half so she fits in nicely. Although I love teaching and often miss being in a classroom, I am very happy with my decision. And I still get to do a lot of what I did in the classroom anyway. (But no more class displays -- boo hoo.) Now on to the art... I noticed the red leaves from a burning bush looked like lips, so I thought it would be fun to make faces out of things from nature. Most of the leaves have already fallen off the trees where I live, but there are a few still hanging on. We took a walk to collect some items that we thought would be good for our project. Then we got to work gluing the items on to resemble a face. I put markers out to add in other details, but it's not necessary. Here's one I made before I drew anything in: And then after: It just adds a little something. We had a lot of fun! And the little one just made a collage. This art won't last forever, but it's a wonderful activity to do on a beautiful autumn day!

Hello Everyone! I love this time of year. I love learning about the trials and successes of the small group of Pilgrims who traveled so far and lived through tragic times...all for freedom. I love sharing with kids the differences in the wants and needs between our generations. I love learning and teaching about the different environments and settings. for many of our kids, the stories of the Pilgrims are just that...stories. I often wonder if they realize that most of what we read about from that time period really happened. There is a legend out there that I came across many years ago, The Legend of the Five Corn Kernels. It is said that the Pilgrims endured such hardship that there were times when all they had to eat were five kernels of corn each per day. When times got better, they continued to serve the five corn kernels on their plates to honor and remember those hard times. Many families of original descent continue this practice. From my research, there is no telling if this was in all actuality something that absolutely occurred, but it is still a wonderful tribute to the trials and remembrances of those people. I want to introduce this visual to my students. I put together a little unit to help describe the legend. You can get your own printable of this little unit. Simply Click HERE! Here's to remembering and celebrating history. I hope you have time to enjoy this little legend in the next couple of weeks. Thanks for stopping by! Joyfully! Nancy
