I started making hybrid animals during the pandemic lockdown as a hobby to do while I was stuck at home. It was inspired in part by Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake and by an old film called The Island of Doctor Moreau.
I love photographing any kind of wildlife. It's a real privilege to wait and watch sometimes for hours until you are joined by a wild animal who is comfortable for you to be nearby and take a picture of him or her. It's even more special when its the elusive and very shy red squirrel. Shy and cautious but also extremely mischievous and fortunately with a love for sunflower seeds meaning they can be tempted to come near and stay still for a few seconds. The native red squirrel is quite rare now in the UK only found in certain regions as it has been hunted by the grey squirrels and have become the dominant strain but the two are very different and the red is much smaller with super tuffty ears and a brilliant red coat. Populations are currently estimated at approximately 140,000 red squirrels and 2.5 million grey squirrels. Red squirrels are our native species and have lived in the UK for around 10,000 years, Grey squirrels were introduced to the UK from North America by the Victorians in the 1800s, the first record of them escaping and establishing a wild population is 1876. The wildlife trusts explains that grey squirrels are a familiar sight for many people across large parts of the UK and are often seen in parks and gardens, whilst the range of our native red squirrels is now limited to certain areas of the UK, such as Anglesey, parts of northern England and Scotland. In many cases they have retreated to wilder, remote locations. Unfortunately, without conservation management, red squirrels could become extinct in England in approximately 10 years. Time is really running out to save our red squirrels. To preserve red squirrels, they must be kept apart from grey squirrels as the two species cannot live together long term. Biologists believe that most of the world’s wildlife remain undiscovered. The same squirrel as on this picture, taken a few minutes later. Technically not a zoo animal, as it is a wild squirrel which just happens to live on the trees in the zoo area.
