This Bundle includes the following lessons / resources: LESSON #1: This is the first editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson in a series of four lessons that covers the genre of research report writing. It introduces students to this genre, covers what a research question is, and how to use a K-W-L chart to find a research question. Students will compare this genre of academic writing to previous genres that they've learned. Specifically, how opinion and argumentative essays can be supported with personal experiences or logical, while research reports need to be supported by facts. Students will be introduced to different sources of information for their research report, as well as methods for organizing their information. The homework asks students to complete five note cards on a topic they're interested in with information from at least three different types of sources (magazines, books, interviews, websites, journals, etc...) LESSON #2: This is the second editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson in a series of four lessons that covers the genre of research report writing. It begins by asking students to utilize their K-W-L chart to record what they learned about their topic of interest. This was assigned in the first lesson. Students will evaluate their classmates sources and learn how to recognize reputable sources of information. Students will build on the information in their K-W-L charts to formulate research questions and thesis statements. Strategies for searching for information online will be reviewed. The PPT includes a graphic to help students create an outline for their research reports. The homework asks students to complete two different graphic organizers, so they can create an outline for their research report. LESSON #3: This is the third editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson in a series of four lessons that covers the genre of research report writing. Students will work to further develop their thesis statements and discuss how they plan to support their argument. Classmates will evaluate one another's academic argument through peer review. Students will be reminded of the importance of anticipating counterarguments when attempting to prove their thesis. This lesson goes over the importance of citing sources, as well as how students can create in-text citations and bibliography pages. Plagiarism is addressed. The lesson covers the importance of utilizing timely sources of information, as well as strategies for an effective introduction in a research report. The homework asks students to write the first draft of their research report. LESSON #4: This is the fourth editable PowerPoint (PPT) lesson in a series of four lessons that covers the genre of research report writing. Students will begin by reviewing the features of this genre of academic writing (the notion of argument, a research question, and thesis statement that is supported with facts). Strategies for an effective conclusion are addressed, including the need to address areas for further research. Students be introduced the different styles of academic research writing (MLA and APA) and how to include this in their papers. Finally, students will engage in peer review and editing of the first draft they wrote for homework in the last lesson. Tables and checklists are provided to assist with the peer review process. The homework asks students to publish their research report. FOLLOW ME ON TpT FOR MORE GREAT RESOURCES - INCLUDING FREEBIES! Highlights Taking Control of Writing Your Thesis offers a clear account of the how, what, why and who of working together to produce, finish and submit a successful thesis. About the Author: Kay Guccione is Researcher Mentoring & Coaching Programme Designer at the University of Sheffield, UK. 192 Pages Study Guides, Study & Test-Taking Skills Description Book Synopsis Taking Control of Writing Your Thesis offers a clear account of the how, what, why and who of working together to produce, finish and submit a successful thesis. Guccione is a Thesis Coach and Thesis Mentoring Programme Designer and is currently researching the barriers to thesis completion; Wellington has supervised and examined numerous dissertations at MA and doctoral level. They draw on these experiences throughout. They show that planning, writing, and support for thesis writers is a collaborative venture but also one which students can take ownership of and manage. They show that there are ways for students to become more connected to what and who they need, and explore the collegial and peer-support structures that are there to be utilised. They situate the student within an educational context viewing them not as the lone researcher able or not able, skilled or unskilled, but as the navigator of the writing process. The authors draw on their experience to provide ways of thinking, and tools for empowering students to feel more in control of the practices of writing about research. The book explores every aspect of the research journey, including the emotional side of writing, the ground rules of supervision and the use of coaching and mentoring support systems. The inclusion of student voice brings the student perspective to life, making the content especially accessible. Review Quotes This is the book that research students and their supervisors have been waiting for. Much more than a mere guide to thesis writing, it offers wise and practical advice on every aspect of the journey from research to publication. Susan Wallace, Emeritus Professor of Education, Nottingham Trent University, UK About the Author Kay Guccione is Researcher Mentoring & Coaching Programme Designer at the University of Sheffield, UK. Jerry Wellington is Professor in Education at the University of Sheffield, UK.
This book presents the doctoral dissertation process as not just a way of getting a qualification or even a method of learning how to do research better, but as a substantial and significant piece of research in its own right. The book will inspire current and prospective PhD scholars to take up ambitious and large-scale study projects, dedicating this most important time to a worthy piece of research. This edited collection provides real and outstanding examples of multiple research design methodologies which will allow doctoral researchers to develop a wide set of research skills, leading to the development of a high-quality academic thesis from which peer reviewed research papers and books can emerge. Each main chapter presents the summary of a doctoral thesis, followed by focused aspects from the projects where the contributors highlight the development of a research design, the process involved in executing the design, and present selected findings with their implications. Each chapter concludes with the researchers' experiences of learning through this journey and the implications of the process for the development of the discipline and their own career. Ideal reading for doctoral students and supervisors, this book is a source of encouragement and motivation for new researchers seeking to challenge general perceptions in the social sciences that PhD or other doctoral research projects must be small-scale rather trivial studies, but can instead produce robust findings that have real-world implications.
