If you've been to Arches National Park, you've seen this rock. It's amazing, a giant boulder that appears to be perched, precariously, on top of a big pile of smaller rocks. It really boggles the mind. I was in the park early one morning and I started here, then I went to Organ Rock (which is best shot as the sun crests the La Sal Mountain range) which I'll post soon. I don't think the rock formation to the right has a name, but if anyone knows let me know! One thing I noticed about shooting in Utah is that the sunrises/sunsets seem to last longer. I normally am shooting sunrise/sunset in California, where I live, so I guess Utah is flatter than California?? (don't laugh!) I mean, seriously...less mountains to block the sunlight?? I'm perplexed, but I swear the glowing sunlight lasted longer. Or maybe it was all the....driving I did :) http://www.lighttheexpedition.com

This is the Pinnacle Rock on the Heart of Rocks loop trail at Chiricahua National Monument. I went to Chiricahua National Monument for a weekend of hiking, camping and adventure. I had never been here even though I had heard a lot about it. The rock pinnacles, or hoodoos, which the monument was primarily created to protect, are erosional features composed of welded rhyolite tuff, which is volcanic in nature. A “Wonderland of Rocks” is waiting for you to explore at Chiricahua National Monument. This forest of rock spires was eroded from layers of ash deposited by the Turkey Creek Volcano eruption 27 million years ago. The 8 mile paved scenic drive and 18 miles of day-use hiking trails provide opportunities to discover the beauty, natural sounds, and inhabitants of this 11,985 acre site. Visit the Faraway Ranch Historic District to discover more about the people who have called this area home: Chiricahua Apaches, Buffalo Soldiers, Erickson and Stafford families. Chiricahua National Monument is a unit of the National Park Service. The monument is located approximately 36 miles (58 km) southeast of Willcox, Arizona. It preserves the remains of an immense volcanic eruption that shook the region some 27 million years ago. Called the Turkey Creek Caldera eruption, it eventually laid down two thousand feet of ash and pumice, highly siliceous in nature. This eventually hardened into rhyolite tuffs, and eroded into the natural features visible at the monument today. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiricahua_National_Monument www.nps.gov/chir/index.htm IMGP0685

Canyon de Chelly National Monument is located on a high plateau at an elevation of 6500 feet in northeastern Arizona near the center of the Navajo Reservation. It encompasses 130 square miles and is actually three red-walled canyons --- Canyon del Muerto, Monument Canyon and the namesake, Canyon de Chelly (pronounced "Shay".) Spider Rock is on the South Rim Drive, a 36-mile round trip. These spectacular sandstone spires rise 800 feet above the canyon floor at the junction of Canyon de Chelly and Monument Canyon. Navajo legend has it the Spider Woman lives on top and keeps the bones of her victims there. Beyond, the main canyon continues unseen for many miles. The weather here this day was crazy -- rain, sleet, hail and sun peaking through the clouds making for some wild light shows. The trees with the lighter, almost teal colored leaves in that little spot of light toward the top of the frame are Russian Olive Trees. They have an amazing aroma right after they bloom that's the most amazing fragrance I've ever smelled. It's very fleeting, and doesn't last the entire summer, but it was at its peak when we were there. Reached Explore #111 on May 30, 2008. Thank you all!

This rock formation is called the Kissing Rocks. It is on the Heart of Rocks Loop. Lots of interesting rock formations on this loop. Wildlife is majestic, and observing it can be an amazing experience. However, while for some the wild can be mere minutes away from their homes, being surrounded by nature is a luxury for many. Venturing out to seek beautiful vistas and amazing sceneries can be tricky for the majority of people, too. Trips to the wild can be quite expensive in terms of time, money, and effort. You also often have to be able-bodied and quite fit to go on such adventures. That is why so many of us are so grateful to wildlife photographers.

Get classic photography for a fraction of the cost of buying from a gallery. This classic photograph from the American Southwest was taken in the early-90's on a trip through Northern Arizona and Utah. Canyon de Chelly is one of the most under-rated landscapes and one that is known for several iconic photographs by Ansel Adam, as well as being a location featured in several Western movies. It will been printed using an archival Giclée process on Moab Entrada Rag Natural 190 Photographic Paper to last a lifetime. This photographic paper produces fantastic prints with vivid colors or black and white tones with crisp sharpness. Ask us about other Sizes and Printing Options! We offer canvas prints, acrylic laminated photo paper, and many other types of media. Please respect my copyright, and do not reproduce this image without written consent.
Predating the New Mexican flag, this sun, according to one source, is a symbol of happiness that appears in the iconography of a number of Native American cultures. I think it's from the historical period as is the handprint to the right. members of the southern plains nations seem to have painted it over what appears to be prehistoric horned dancing figures. (I should probably look at my notes again). As is the case of many historical paintings in Pecos River region, the artist was probably not from the region but was en route to present-day Mexico.
