Pack of 12 Hornfels samples approximately 1" (3cm) in size Formed at the baked contact between an intruding igneous body and the surrounding rock Perfect size for use in classroom identification labs and exercises, correlates well to Next Generation Science Standards Evidence Statements Great for students studying the effects of thermal alteration of metamorphic rocks Specimen comes in clear labeled and barcoded bag for ideal storage Hornfels forms in the narrow band between an igneous intrusion and the surrounding rock. As an intrusion propagates through the crust, the magma scorches and heats the crustal rock around it. This heat chemically alters the crust, forming a baked contact containing hornfels. This samples is good for metamorphic rock classification and identification, and is a great example of heat alteration. Pack of 12 specimen samples.
10 Unpolished Mineral Specimens. Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side, and can vary in color from grey to a dark pink. An igneous volcanic rock that is rich in silica, Rhyolite is known to have a texture that ranges from glassy all the way to porphyritic. This sample of Rhyolite is porphyritic, meaning that at least one group of crystals is distinctly bigger than others that are present. It is also extrusive, which is to say that the magma from which it was formed reached the surface of the Earth, either flowing out (extruding) to the surface, or exploding violently into the open air. It is considered to be the extrusive equivalent to granite, in part due to the resemblance that the can share. Rhyolite is related to obsidian, in that the difference lays primarily in how fast they were cooled. When cooled too quickly, the crystals form into a type of natural glass, known as obsidian. When it cools at a slower rate, microscopic crystals are allowed to form, allowing Rhyolite to occur. Origin: CO

Pack of 10. Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side. Commonly distributed, Gneiss is created by the high-grade metamorphic processes from pre-existing rock formations that started out as either igneous or sedimentary rocks. Typically, gneiss is foliated, or composed of layers, with alternating light and dark colored bands, called "gneissic banding". Unlike a lot of names, gneiss actually comes from Middle High German verb gneist, rather than Latin, and means "to spark", due to its glittering nature. Origin: WY, CO, UT
