Grafting is an ancient agricultural practice that joins the root system (rootstock) of one plant to the shoot (scion) of another. It is most commonly employed in woody perennial crops to indirectly manipulate scion phenotype. While recent research has focused on scions, here we investigate rootstocks, the lesser-known half of the perennial crop equation. We review natural grafting, grafting in agriculture, rootstock diversity and domestication, and developing areas of rootstock research, including molecular interactions and rootstock microbiomes.

Rootstock – The root system and the base of the trunk below the graft union or graft knot. Rootstock is bread specifically for grafting or budding purposes. It is used for specific growth habits of a tree, such as tree height and overall size, disease resistance, soil adaptivity to various types of soil, precocity, and other growth factors. Rootstock determines the height of your tree. A tree grown from an apple seed will be about 40 feet tall. When shopping for rootstock, all rootstock descriptions feature a “percentage of seedling.” When you see the percentage of seedling this means the tree will grow to the percentage of the full seeded height. EXAMPLE: If you see a stock rated 20% seedling, the equation looks like this:40 ft. x .20=a tree that will be approximately 8 feet tall. Like humans, height is not an exact science so your range may be a few feet on either side of the average. ROOTSTOCK FOR 2024 ULTRA DWARFING - SMALLEST of the SMALL EMLA 27 – 20% of seedling – About 6’ to 10’ Tall *Great for small garden spaces, patio containers, trellised hedges, fence lines and espalier rows. *Must be staked when planted as a single tree. *Needs little pruning after the first five years, except for occasional shortening back of compound spurs. *Scion varieties grown on EMLA 27 grow into small, compact, precocious trees and rarely sucker. *Varieties grown on EMLA 27 produce a good quality of fruit and generally start to yield heavy crops after the second year of first dormancy. DWARFING - 2nd In our SMALL TREE CATAGORY M-9 (T337) – 35% of seedling – About 12’ to 16’ Tall *Induces early cropping with large fruit size. *Good for High density plantings on trellised rows. *Great for small garden spaces, trellised hedges, fence lines and espalier rows. *Must be staked when planted as a single tree. *A regular spray program is recommended. DWARFING - 3rd In our SMALL TREE CATAGORY EMLA 9 – 40% of seedling – About 14’ to 18’ Tall *Induces cropping early in the life of the tree. *Roots are brittle, trees on this root-stock require staking throughout their life. *Fruit is larger and ripens earlier in the season, especially during the early years of the tree’s life. *Trees on EMLA 9 show a wide degree of tolerance to soil conditions, withstanding heavy soils and wet conditions. It is not, however, suitable for dry light soils. Grafting onto rootstock is fun and very "graftifying." You will need apple rootstock, apple scion wood, a very sharp knife, waterproof grafting tape and a nursery pot and soil. Check out our grafting tool kit in our store along with an excellent selection of scion wood. Once you have grafted your new tree, it will be ready to plant in its permanent location in about a year. You should see a fruit crop by year three. Happy Grafting!

The now available rootstocks were once found near Vladivostok (Siberia). This species has purplish red flowers. A great feature of the species is that if the rootstocks would be planted too deep or too shallow, a new root system is created at the correct depth within a season. It also appears to be impossible to completely remove the plant once it has settled. (B)

Every spring during open house, visitors are fascinated by this bizarre evergreen perennial, blue donkey-tail spurge. Looking more like a sedum on Prozac than a member of the poinsettia family, Euphorbia myrsinites will certainly make visitors take notice. The snake-like flat stalks of succulent blue foliage curl outwards to 18" from the central rootstock. In March, the tips of the blue foliage are highlighted with terminal clusters of small yellow flowers. Native to sandy and gravelly mountain slopes, it's perfect in rock walls or meandering near the front of an open perennial border. Good winter drainage in colder areas is essential. Maintenance: About the only maintenance we recommend is to cut back the old flower stalks after flowering, and even that isn't required. If your plant ever become looking tired, then cut the entire clump to the ground, and if it isn't fall or winter, it will quickly resprout. Growing Conditions: Full sun, and well drained soils are the keys to success. Garden Value: Because it's a prostrate grower, it easily weaves in and around taller perennials as long as they aren't dense enough to provide too much shade. The blue foliage color is always welcome by garden designers who focus on color combinations. Natural Impacts: Bees are among many pollinator insects that appreciate the nectar of blue donkey's-tail spurge. One of the few areas, where it grows too well and has become slightly invasive is the Rocky Mountain regions, so if you're in this area, you should choose another plant.

SKU: 9100 Silicone clips attach scion to rootstock of a grafted plant. Holds stems up to 1/16-in. across. GRAFTING ROOTSTOCK You’d love to try Grafted Tomato Plants but hate the $8 cost per plant? Then Graft Your Own! Grafting vegetable plants is just now a big rage in the US, but has been practiced for generations in Europe. Grafting joins the top of the desired plant – the scion – to the root system of another plant – the rootstock. As the two plants fuse, the remarkable flavor of the fruits from the scion combines with the vigor and disease resistance of the rootstock to produce a plant better than either parent. The grafted plant offers greater yields, larger fruits, an extended harvest season and greater resistance to diseases and pests.
