Roses, Salvia and Geranium always make a pleasing trio as outlined in this summer border. Here, the blossoms of English Rose Bonica, bred by Meilland, combine their soft rose-pink color and cup-shaped form happily with the vertical, deep purple and white spikes of 2 lovely Salvias and embrace the violet-blue flowers of Geranium.
Ideal for planting alongside an informal path, Lavender forms a magnificent hedge with its attractive foliage, colorful blossoms and delightful fragrance that entices the senses! Planting a row of Lavender up a path, releasing its fragrance when you brush past it, creates a welcome cottage feel. Paired with roses, the cool purple coloring of the Lavender flower heads becomes a perfect foil for the pink or golden rose blossoms.
Noted for its rich, fruity fragrance, Rosa A Shropshire Lad is ravishing with its large rosettes displaying up to 100 perfectly arranged, soft, and peachy pink petals.

My Mother is a nuts and bolts kind of woman. Practical with no frills. Dust rag in one hand, and a plate of cookies in the other. Being busy is her best friend. The words "sit down" do not relate to her. If ever you give my Mother a compliment she will brush it aside, saying, "Oh gee!" then she will make a clicking sound with her tongue. She is that predictable, and never late. My Mother is a do-er, with a generous heart. (My son Sacha when he was two years old.) My Mother has given me life twice. Once at my birth, and then again after Sacha's birth. A few weeks after Sacha was born my Mom sensed something was wrong with me. She said she thought my stomach should be going down, she said she knew I had lost weight, but that my stomach looked like I was still pregnant. I told her that I felt great, that after three weeks I didn't expect to have a flat stomach, and that if I weren't well, if something were wrong with me certainly Sacha wouldn't be doing well breast feeding. I wasn't worried and brushed her concern away. Still she persisted. After days of discussing the way I looked, my Mom said she would not return home (California,) until I went to see a Doctor. I told her I didn't mind if she stayed in France with me forever. She laughed, and then nearly bopped me over the head with a wooden spoon. She has a way of getting her point across. That is how I found out I had ovarian cancer. It is a silent killer. My Mother's intuition saved me. A Mother's love, is that she can feel her children from the inside out. My Mother is the strongest woman I know. She has given me the gift of life twice. Her love has been my guiding light, and without it I would be lost. Happy Mother's Day! Tell me about your Mother?
Cupped roses can misbehave in my garden - maybe it's the climate? I'm never sure why. And pale pastels can look really washed out under the so-strong New Zealand sun. But not the beautiful cupped pale pastel David Austin rose Windemere...
'Belle Isis' is a Gallica rose that i acquired, because I wanted both parents ('Dainty Maid' is the other) of the David Austin rose, 'Constance Spry' growing in the same garden bed. www.helpmefind.com/rose/pl.php?n=620

Pros/Cons Flower Care Quantity Help Substitutes The Good: Standard Premium Roses are very predictable in color and they are so hardy and long-lasting! We rarely do a wedding without roses, they are truly classic and a wonderful foundation element in any arrangement. They are also fun to reflex, see video below! The Bad: Roses come closed and need to 'bloom', therefore they need a lot of elbow room, so no crowding! If tight set them outside in warm weather for a few hours or use a hairdryer (heat OFF, cool setting only) to push the petals open. One other trick is to turn a rose upside down and spin the stem in your hand, this will force the bloom open quickly. The foliage on roses are typically crummy, and we often remove, so don't freak if the greenery looks shabby. Remove lower leaves, give the stems a fresh cut, and place in cool water for 1 hour BEFORE unwrapping cardboard. This will prevent the roses from slumping over by allowing them to rehydrate while upright. After an hour, remove the wrapping and spread out. Allow for plenty of elbow room! Roses can come in tight, so place them in a sunny location to encourage opening. Remove guard petals, which may have spots or bruising. All substitutions are only done as a last resort, and only when the reasons for doing so are reasonable and genuine. For example, if a flower becomes unavailable (off-crop), incorrect color, or not in good condition to grace a wedding function we will substitute a flower that has a similar color and price-point. Watch our video on substitutions to learn more.Acceptable Subs: Different rose variety in the same color palette, or a combination of filler flowers to give the same stem-count and colo.
While the history of Valentine’s Day is hotly debated, there's no question that roses have come to symbolise love and romance.
