Roy de Maistre (Australian, 1894-1968), Farmhouse in the Pyrenees, c.1930. Oil on plywood, 60 x 49 cm.
It is an Original Painting The Joker -2, Acrylic on canvas, size-24x36 Prabal Roy uses the metaphor of clowns to depict some serious issues Joker occupies the central position in Prabal Roy’s canvases. In the Kolkata-based artist’s exhibition, “Out of Frame”, his canvases showcase various aspects of a clown by reinventing and reviving the figure of a joker which according to the artist is there in every individual. “Each and everyone, more or less is in a way or other, has a belonging with the clown,” explains Roy. The exhibition was inaugurated by First Lady, Suvra Mukherjee. The ambiguity of Roy’s paintings might puzzle the viewer at first, but a closer and a keener look will helpnotice its minute details and comprehend the underlying depth. “In few of my paintings, the basic idea is to depict the clowns in a way that it seems as if they are overcoming the life’s hurdles and getting ahead,” says the artist. The canvases, in a way, reflect Roy’s personal experiences. “There was a time when people made fun of me, ridiculed me and those incidents inspired me to clown that out on canvas. For a clown, he makes people laugh by ridiculing himself and still smiles, similarly I believed that come what may, I will smile and paint something which matches my character.” Group Exhibitions: 2013- ‘Spread’ at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; ‘Spread’ at Karnataka Chitrakala Parisath, Bangalore; ‘Artist Guild’ at Birla Academy, Kolkata; ‘Shatak Ekush’ at Chemould Art Gallery, Kolkata, ‘Painted Poetry’ at Birla Academy. 2012- ‘Spread’ at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; Space Art Gallery, Hyderabad; Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi; AIFACS, New Delhi; ‘Shatak Ekush’ at Chemould Art Gallery, Kolkata; GLRA(Germany) at Lalit Kala Academy, Chennai; Shree art Gallery, Kolkata; ‘Nirvana’, Dubai. 2011 - ‘Nirvana’ at Visual Art Gallery, New Delhi; ‘Anubhabe Rabindranath’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Spread’ at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; Aspect Art Gallery at Halo Heritage, Birla Academy and Art Walk (Emami Chisel), Kolkata; Shree Art Gallery, Kolkata; ‘Time and Space’, Bangalore; ‘Sixth Sense’ at Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai; Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, Bangalore; ‘Pearl Art Gallery’ at Lalit Kala Academy, New Delhi. 2010 – Maya Art Gallery, Bangalore; Renaissance Gallerie, Bangalore; ‘Bango Sanskriti Parisad’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Creative Wave’ at Academy of Fine Arts; Shilpo Bhabna at Gallery 79, Kolkata; ‘Spread’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Shatak Ekush’ at Academy of Fine Arts; Shree Art Gallery; ‘Spandan’ at ITC Sonar, Kolkata; Bharat Kalakendra at Birla Academy; Aspect Art Gallery at Halo Heritage, Kolkata; Art Camp at Shantiniketan, Cooch Bihar, and Mandarmani (Emami Chisel), West Bengal; Bimal Mitra Academy at kolkata. 2009 - ‘Artist Group’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Spread’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Shatak Ekush’ at Academy of Fine Arts; Chemould Art Gallery, Kolkata; ‘Spread’ at Birla Academy; ‘Dhaka-Kolkata’ at Bengal Gallery of Fine Arts, Bangladesh. 2008 –‘Tale of Two Cities’ at AIFACS, New Delhi; ‘The Address’, Indore’; ‘Art Elements’, New Delhi; ‘MEC Gallery’, New Delhi; ‘City Dhoomimal’ Gallery, New Delhi; ‘Satak Ekush’, Kolkata; ‘Confluence’ at Shillong; ‘Spread’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Art 39’ at Academy of Fine Arts; ‘Spectrum’ Art Gallery, Kolkata; ‘Genesis’ Art Gallery, Kolkata; ‘INFAC’ Camp & Exhibition, Kolkata. 2007 - ‘The Deities’ at Artist Circle Gallery, Kolkata; ‘Foliate’, ‘Touch’ & ‘Exposure’ at Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata; ‘Yapan Chitra’ Art Gallery; Kolkata; ‘INFAC’ Camp & Exhibition; Kolkata. Jean-Pierre Roy’s new body work evolves his stirring, rich paintings, which blend geometric abstraction and figurative scenes. Recent works will be shown at the VOLTA NY fair, running in New York City from March 7-11. Roy was the cover artist for Hi-Fructose Vol. 37. In a statement, the show says that Roy “will continue to place figures in an optically loaded environment, allowing for the entropic confusion of historical painting tropes, non-spaciotemporal geometry, and figurative drama to play out against an arid, dystopian landscape.”
