Planning to visit Yellowstone National Park in October? Here are 10 important things you need to know including weather, crowds and hotels.
No, you're not looking at the Leaky Cauldron set from Harry Potter. This amazing rustic resort is one of the top 150 buildings in America, and was named the 36th best inn in the country. Today the Old Faithful Inn is one of the only remaining log hotels (and buildings) still standing, and after 110 years it remains one of the coolest buildings to spend a weekend in. Designed by Robert Reamer, the Old Faithful Inn was built in waves, starting with the Old House that makes up the lobby and guest rooms. In the center of the seven story tall gabled lobby is an unforgettable 500-ton, 85-foot tall stone fireplace that reaches up the hight of the building and looks like something right out of Game of Thrones. Over the years, Old Faithful Inn has gone through quite a few expansions, storms, and fires, and in 1959 during the Hebgen Lake earthquake the building was shaken from its foundations and many of the inn's beautiful fireplaces were damaged, including the main hearth in the lobby. The second story was renovated and some of the smaller fireplaces were replaced and given new life again. Everything was quiet on the home front until 1988, when the North Fork Fire threatened to burn the entire Inn to the ground, luckily firefighters, volunteers, and a heavy-duty rooftop sprinkler kept the inn safe and spared it from the flames. On the inn's 100th birthday in 2004, a four-year multi-million dollar project began to upgrade the building, while restoring and maintaining as much of the historical material as possible. The Inn is, for obvious reasons, the most requested lodging in Yellowstone National Park and the 327 rooms are open for booking from early May until mid-October. Rooms and suits cost anywhere between $159 a night to upwards of $525 for the hotels main suit, some of which face the geyser. The Old Faithful Inn also offers daily tours for anyone not wanting to cough up the doe, but who wants to see inside the awesome Nationally historic building. It's one of America's most iconic hotels so if you do have the chance to spend the night while visiting Yellowstone National Park, it's absolutely worth it! -Roadtrippers This historic cabin facility is located near Old Faithful Geyser and includes a one-story main lodge built in the 1920's featuring massive logs and stone pillars. Tremendous views of the Old Faithful Geyser can be seen from the bakery and cafeteria-style food court. The large gift store is also located in the lodge. Basic cabins are equipped with or without bath and grouped nearby. The lobby of the hotel features a 65-foot ceiling, a massive rhyolite fireplace, and railings made of contorted lodgepole pine. Its incredibly large space can be experienced on many different levels and from many different vantage points. The visitor can stand in the middle of the lobby and look up at the exposed structure, or climb up a gnarled log staircase to one of the balconies and look up, down, or across. Wings were added to the hotel in 1915 and 1927, and today there are 327 rooms available to guests in this National Historic Landmark. The rustic-style lodge, with log and wood shingle exterior is located adjacent to the world famous Old Faithful Geyser. The original part of the Inn, known as the "Old House" was completed in 1904 and includes an immense lobby with a huge stone fireplace. The East and West Wings were added in the teens and the twenties, with many rooms having been remodeled in recent years. Guest accommodations include rooms with private and shared baths. Additionally, a full service restaurant, deli, gift store and interpretive tours are available at the Inn. Please note that all park accommodations are non-smoking and reflecting the natural surroundings of Yellowstone; televisions, radios, air conditioning, and Internet service is not available. Wheelchair accessible accommodations are available on a limited basis.
