Le svirgolettate, sono tocchi di colore apportati su un dipinto, pennellate vigorose o delicate, a seconda dello stato d'animo dell'artista. I miei pensieri, le mie ricerche, le mie idee, sono le mie svirgolettate di ogni giorno ad un dipinto in costante evoluzione: la mia vita. Una tela nata bianca, pura, e disegnata, colorata, ideata, giorno dopo giorno grazie all’apporto di queste mie piccole ma decisive pennellate di pensieri.
Nearly 500 years after Florence ditched Michelangelo’s grand design for the exterior of San Lorenzo Basilica, the city’s mayor wants to finally realise the artist’s vision.
In memoria della vittoria sui Francesi nella battaglia del 10 agosto 1557, giorno di san Lorenzo, Emanuele di Savoia decide di erigere un santuario. Ma le casse dello stato sono vuote e allora, al posto di una grande e costosa chiesa costruita ex novo, ripiega sul restauro di una piccola chiesa esistente in piazza Castello a ridosso di un palazzo di proprietà privata. I lavori iniziano nel 1563, l'anno in cui la capitale del Ducato passa da da Chambery a Torino, ma evidentemente non vanno avanti con grande celerità visto che si arriva al 1634 con un niente di fatto e l’Ordine dei Teatini si impegna, con il consenso di Vittorio Amedeo I, ad edificare una nuova chiesa e finalmente nel 1668, Guarino Guarini viene incaricato di redigere il progetto. Guarini appartiene all'Ordine dei Teatini, ha studiato teologia filosofia architettura e matematica a Roma, e giunge a Torino espressamente per occuparsi di questa costruzione. Non demolisce ciò che già è stato costruito ma utilizza le fondazioni esistenti che risalgono al primitivo progetto del Castellamonte, lo si deduce dal registro dei pagamenti del Libro della Fabbrica da cui risultano per i cavaterra spese molto ridotte in proporzione al volume dell’edificio. E' un tipo oculato e anche nel suo Trattato di architettura civile insiste molto sulla necessità di contenere i costi “dovendosi fare il tutto colle minore spesa possibile, non debbosi pertanto adoperare què materiali, che non essendo nel paese non possono conseguirsi, se non con gravissima spesa” La nuova costruzione è collocata, come abbiamo già detto, a ridosso di un palazzo esistente e l'accesso può avvenire soltanto attraverso l'ingresso del palazzo, dunque dall'esterno sarà visibile soltanto la cupola superiore. (In realtà il prospetto di una facciata per San Lorenzo era stato disegnato ma non fu mai realizzato per non interferire con l’omogeneità architettonica della piazza.) Guarini concepisce una pianta centrale costituita da un grande spazio ottagonale inscritto in una forma quadrata a cui le superfici ondulate identificate dalle cappelle laterali danno un effetto di grande dinamismo A questo quadrato, aggiunge un rettangolo in cui racchiude il presbiterio ed il coro. La geometria dell’ottagono imposta tutta la struttura architettonica della chiesa: guardando la cupola vediamo una struttura di archi incrociati che formano un fiore di luce a otto petali. Il numero otto è simbolico e nella tradizione cristiana indica il giorno perfetto, il giorno del ritorno di Cristo. Nel lanternino al centro della cupola di luce Guarini raffigura lo Spirito Santo e in corrispondenza sul pavimento mette una stella a otto punte che riprende i motivi della struttura soprastante. Il cornicione è composto da otto superfici curve che si congiungono. L'intenzione del Guarini è di creare meraviglia e stupore tramite l’architettura l’architettura, che non si compiace, se non di piacere al senso… e meraviglia, la chiesa di san Lorenzo la suscita eccome, con quella cupola di oltre 15 metri di diametro completamente inondata di luce. Guarini infatti non progetta una volta in muratura: la sua cupola è una struttura molto più leggera ma resistente, fatta di archi e nervature. Per capirci possiamo dire che svuota la cupola di tutto il peso inutile e lascia intatto solo lo scheletro su cui si scaricano le forze, ottenendo degli ampi vuoti in cui può collocare le bellissime finestre a serliana (si tratta di un elemento architettonico composto da un arco a tutto sesto affiancato simmetricamente da due aperture sormontate da un'architrave ciascuna delle quali poggia su due colonne) che danno alla costruzione una luce che ai suoi contemporanei appare assolutamente miracolosa. Entrando nella chiesa, la completa mancanza di finestre nelle cappelle e i marmi scuri alle pareti avvolgono il fedele nel buio, simbolo della sua condizione umana ed esortazione a iniziare il suo percorso verso l'Assoluto attraverso la luce che gli si svela man mano. E grazie ai suoi studi matematici Guarini riesce a stupire e a sorprendere in una maniera che ha dell'incredibile. Spiego. Le cappelle radiali non ricevono luce diretta dall'esterno, ma ciascuna reca un oculo al di sopra, mentre sotto la volta si nota una stella a sei punte con al centro un altro oculo, che come l'altro, non riceve luce. Ebbene per sole due volte l'anno, il giorno dell'Equinozio di Primavera e d'Autunno, il raggio di luce che entra a mezzogiorno dalla cupola va a colpire l'oblò della prima cappella accanto all'altare, dal quale filtra e illumina un affresco che altrimenti sarebbe completamente buio e invisibile. E l'affresco ha esattamente la dimensione dell'area colpita dal raggio di luce, non un centimetro di più. Portentoso. E le sorprese di san Lorenzo non sono ancora finite. infatti guardando la cupola da una particolare angolazione ci si sente osservati da una inquietante faccia con i denti digrignati. La guida scrive che è un effetto casuale non voluto dall'architetto, ma io in questa chiesa di casuale non ci ho visto proprio niente.
