Pure Santalum austrocaledonicum essential oil.Sandalwood essential oil comes from the wood of slow-growing hemiparasitic trees of the genus Santalum. Overharvesting and illegal logging have led to concerns about the long-term viability of the well-known Santalum album, commonly known as Indian Sandalwood. We are happy
Santalum album is an evergreen tree or parasite/hemiparasite in the Santalaceae family. Its native range is from Jawa to Northern Australia. Familiar names include Chandana, Indian Sandalwood, and White Sandalwood. In Hinduism, they are considered sacred trees for their fragrance and medicinal qualities. It has been over-exploited for its essential oils. The small size of the trees has decimated the woodworking aspect from being over-exploited. They can live to be 100 years old. It parasites another surrounding tree by tapping into the roots and stealing water or nutrients. It grows naturally in dry forests around 2,300 feet in elevation. It can grow to around 30 feet tall but is usually around 5-8 feet tall and wide. The leaves are lanceolate around 2-3 inches long and 1-2 inches wide. The maroon and white flowers are fragrant, around 1/2" inch. It is in bloom from late spring until late fall. It prefers to grow in full sun to part shade with average water needs. Zones 10-11 Germination Soak seeds for 24 hours in warm water. Sow seeds 1/2" deep, then tamp seeds into the soil and lightly cover. Keep moist in a bright spot. Keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 30-60 days.
The Vanuatu variety of Sandalwood is rich in santalol, the chemical constituent that gives the signature creamy euphoric sandalwood aroma. This smooth island sandalwood is warm, woody and honey-sweet and a great alternative to, if not better than, the prized East Indian Sandalwood Santalum album which is becoming more and more scarce. Our Vanuatu Sandalwood is sustainably produced and eco-harvested by a small project on the pristine South Pacific Vanuatu island in New Caledonia. Sandalwood production is regulated by government and for every 1 tree harvested, 5 new sandalwood plants are in turn planted. In this way the demand for sandalwood can be met and the trees will never be endangered. Sandalwood is a slightly thick oil that gets better with age. Sandalwood oil is valued in perfumery as one of the finest fixatives. By itself it is a beautiful, long lasting sweet perfume. It can also blend well with many other perfumes and botanicals without overpowering, making it very versatile and useful. Sandalwood makes an elegant base note in woody floral and oriental bases, precious wood accords, and high class florals. Botanical Name: Santalum austrocaledonicum Aroma: Sweet, creamy, santalol-rich woody. very long and sweet woody drydown Country of Origin: Vanuatu Cultivation Method: Eco-cultivated Method of Extraction: Steam distilled Plant Part: Heartwood Blends Well With: Cedar, Chamomile, Bergamot, Lemon, Orange, Geranium, Eucalyptus, Frankincense, Lavender, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Rose, Jasmine, Tuberose, Pine, Patchouli, Spruce, Vanilla, Vetiver, Spikenard, Myrrh, Plumeria

Santalum album Striking dark red blossoms tip the long, slim green branches of this small tropical evergreen tree native to India. The bark ranges in color from dark brown to black and features a red interior. Indian Sandalwood can live up to one hundred years, and has been highly prized throughout history. This species has been cultivated and traded since ancient times, and is known for the valued essential oil that's extracted from the tree. Over exploitation and fire are threats to the tree and because of this the Indian government has placed a ban on the export of the timber. Indian Sandalwood grows best in well drained, sandy soil. [syn. Santalum freycinetianum var. freycinetianum] ʻIliahi or Forest sandalwood Santalaceae (Sandalwood family) Endemic to the Hawaiian Islands (Oʻahu only) Oʻahu (Cultivated) Habit (wild) www.flickr.com/photos/dweickhoff/5210116890/in/pool-beaut... Flowers and especially the heartwood have a pleasing sandalwood fragrance. The Hawaiian name lāʻau ʻala literally means "sweet wood" or "fragrant wood." Though early Hawaiians may not have used ʻiliahi wood extensively, it was still valued. Besides used as firewood, the light yellow wood was sometimes used to make ʻūkēkē or musical bow. Medicinally, the leaves were used as a shampoo for dandruff and head lice; and a drink from powdered material for male and female sex organs or "for sores of long duration." The fragrant heartwood and bark of ʻiliahi was pounded to scent the smell of new kapa (tapa), and when added with coconut oil the would water proof the material. One older source (Charles Gaudichaud,1819) states that Hawaiians "used all fragrant plants, all flowers and even colored fruits" for lei making. The red or yellow were indicative of divine and chiefly rank; the purple flowers and fruit, or with fragrance, were associated with divinity. Because of their long-standing place in oral tradition, the leaves, new leaves (liko) and flowers of ʻiliahi were likely used for lei making by early Hawaiians, even though there are no written sources. Etymology The generic name Santalum is derived from santalon, the Greek name for sandalwood. The specific epithet freycinetianum is named in honor of Captain Loius de Freycinet (1779-1840), commander of the French exploration on board of which was Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupre, the first Western botanist to come to the Hawaiian Islands. nativeplants.hawaii.edu/plant/view/Santalum_freycinetianum
