Leading up to life as a post-graduate my goal has always been to give back to my parents, my day-one supporters. Now that I'm approaching a year as a full-time working girl, I am finally in a place where I can start doing so. My mom and I went on our first girls' trip to Italy this past February and still find ourselves gushing about it each time we get together. Come fall, I decided to treat her to a birthday vacation in a city that has all the charm and ease for the perfect girls' trip -- Savannah, Georgia. Lined with Spanish moss-covered oak trees and elegantly historic architecture, Savannah has everything we wanted from a quaint Southern city. Beyond a welcoming environment, the locals made us feel right at home with a kind of friendliness that isn't always found in New York. It takes more than a few paragraphs to describe Savannah with its deeply rooted history and uniquely Southern culture. But I can say that from my mom's goal to visit all fifty of the United States, I'm so grateful we chose to explore this one together. Read on more details from our first day in Georgia's oldest but most beautiful city: I'm not usually a fan of guided tours, but we kicked off our trip with a popular Savannah trolley tour to get acquainted with the city. Most of these tours offer unlimited hop-on hop-off capabilities for the remainder of the day, and I would also recommend them as initial guides to map out the rest of your trip. After the 90-minute ride, we were more than excited to get exploring. Our first brunch was the most un-southern meal of the trip, but as a New Yorker I couldn't resist the best Aussie café in town. The Collins Quarter brought the Australian dining scene to Savannah with its best-in-class coffees (especially the lavender mocha) and avocado toasts, of course. But despite the cultural change, there was definitely a Southern influence on my french toast with its unapologetic toppings of pulled pork and bacon. Just across the street from brunch was the Birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, who is best known for establishing the Girl Scouts. Fun fact of the day: I was a Girl Scout for about ten years. Savannah has no shortage of homes to visit, and this one seems to always top the list. When visiting the historic city I would absolutely recommend visiting at least one home. The amount of history that lines these streets is best experienced in person rather than read on a web page. Any Forrest Gump fans here? Just down the street from the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace is Chippewa Square, where Tom Hanks famously gave his "life is like a box of chocolates" line. The original bench no longer stands here, but the area is still worth the stroll. Savannah boasts 22 beautiful squares that make walking the best mode of transportation. A further walk down Savannah's historic district is its famous Forsyth Park, where a stunning line of oak trees leads down to the iconic fountain. You can easily spend hours in this park strolling, reading, or simply lounging along any of its 30 acres. It's no wonder that so many couples choose to get married in this very spot. Speaking of weddings, another popular spot for the event is The Gingerbread House, which sits just outside the historic district. This house has become a photographic symbol of Savannah as well as a preferred venue for various events. It was quite the walk from brunch to this spot, but the view was well worth it. There is a consistency between the cities I love most -- Venice, Lisbon, and now Savannah. They are all best seen on foot. I love any walkable city that lends itself to exploration outside of the typical tourist spots. Jones Street is one of the most beautiful streets to stroll in Savannah with its uniquely elegant Southern homes. I especially loved each homeowner's festive spirit, with metallic pumpkins and colorful flowers decorating the stairways. Needless to say I couldn't help but stop to take photos every few seconds. Not photographed: We ended our day with dinner at Alligator Soul, where we dined over an elegant seafood meal. Between stuffed oysters, mussels, and scallops, we had a fantastic culinary welcome to Savannah. Don't be surprised when restaurant staff constantly strike up conversations while you dine either. We were so warmly greeted by our waitress that every minute was made memorable. It's no wonder the South is attributed to hospitality and charm. Stay tuned for more highlights from our Savannah getaway!

From the simple Colonial style to the intricate Medieval-influenced cathedrals, to the gingerbread accents of the Victorian period; examples of most, if not all, of the nation's 18th and 19th century architectural styles prevail in Savannah. More than 40 percent of the buildings and homes found in Savannah, Georgia have architectural or historical significance. The restoration of these structures is often undertaken by passionate individuals in strict accordance with the rules and regulations put forth by the Savannah Historic Foundation. This photo shows a classic staircase style seen on many of Savannah's homes. The scene is accentuated by all the lush greenery surrounding the exterior and the dripping, Spanish moss on the live oak trees surrounding the house. This photo would enliven any wall in a home or make a wonderful gift for anyone who loves Savannah or history. This photo comes in a variety of standard sizes and is printed on archival paper.

What's the longest you've ever been away from home? Other than college, the longest I've been away was eight weeks, way, WAY back when I was a counselor at sleepaway camp. As an adult, the longest stretch was 2 1/2 weeks, when we went to South Carolina in the summer of 2014. This winter, Mr. Goo Shoes and I beat our "personal best." We rented a little bungalow in Pompano Beach, Florida for the month of February. We packed up the car, and the three of us -- the third being Sadie -- headed south down Interstate 95. We took our time, stopping in Virginia for one night, and Savannah, GA for two nights. I wanted a full day to see the iconic southern city which has long been on my bucket list. Driving back, we made the same two stops, stretching our time away from home to just about five weeks. It was glorious to escape the usual scenery and winter weather! Weirdly, it didn't feel exactly like a vacation, because we weren't being pampered at a hotel, and had to do things like food shopping, laundry, and tidying the house. Yet, it surely was a welcomed escape from everyday life. And so, snaps from Savannah and Florida make up my "Away From Home" photo diary for February. Technically, these photos from Savannah are from the end of January. Our first night's dinner was at the renowned Olde Pink House Restaurant. The mansion housing the restaurant was built in 1771. Food was as good as the restaurant is pretty! Savannah was as much about the food for me, as were the sights (isn't that always the case???). Therefore, breakfast was considered an important meal, and the Bay Street veggie scramble accompanied with a scrumptious biscuit at B. Matthew's, did not disappoint. We had one day to see as much of Savannah as possible. The weather was perfect -- sunny and in the 60's. According to my Fitbit, I logged 19,000 steps (8.23 miles)! Mr. GS and Sadie didn't do quite that much. Our hotel was in the historic district, near the Savannah River. Gorgeous live oaks, with hanging Spanish moss, had me snapping pictures at every corner. On February 1, we started our final stretch down I-95. As highways go, it's pretty boring, but this made me do a double-take. No, that truck isn't going the wrong way, it's hitched to the one in front of it. Another eye-catcher was an enormous amount of smoke off I-95 in Brevard County. Apparently, it was a "prescribed burn" of 1700 acres. I had to google why that would be done. It's to reduce the brush and overgrowth that would otherwise fuel a dangerous wildfire. Yikes, that was scary! Are we there yet? Almost! Palm trees and warmer temperatures greeted us in Florida. We chose our rental based on its proximity to the beach - just a half block away! It was a treat to walk to the beach and see the ocean whenever we wanted to. The weather was perfect for the entire month - sunny every single day but one. A minor bummer was that it was extremely windy at our beach. The first day, our umbrella took off five minutes after we sat down (and, I might add, Mr. GS does know how to anchor an umbrella in the sand). The irony was that we had to drive to a less windy beach most days, instead of walking the half block to our own. Kite flyers were happy, though. On the days we were able to spend at our beach, we had it almost to ourselves. Lighthouse Point was not only visible from our beach in Pompano, but on our drive up A1A. I shot this out of the car window......not bad! We spent most of our time at Deerfield Beach, which was a bit less windy (and truth be told, we liked it much better). The shade of the palm trees meant we didn't have to worry about putting up our umbrella and risk having it impale a fellow sunbather. Sometimes you need to lie down on a beach towel and stare up at the palm trees.......and hope that a coconut doesn't fall on your head. Our backyard was meh, and we spent little time in it. This green fellow liked it well enough, and was a regular visitor. He and Sadie were quite intrigued with each other. I was a regular visitor to this green gym. There is no way I could be away for a month and not exercise........ Not if I was going to eat this.......... And drink this.......... And fit into my bathing suit. Mr. GS passed on the exercise program, and managed to maintain his boyish figure, bless his heart. "Dad Stud" was Junior GS' comment, when he saw this picture. I'd have to agree! Last year, when we were in Deerfield, the beach was much wider. The water came up a lot higher this year, and covered the rocks. Dramatic cloud formations, deep blue skies, and turquoise waters were the backdrops to most of our days. We saw a bunch of friends and family while we were in Florida. Dining outside on the Intracoastal with good friends was living "la bonne vie." The month went by so quickly. Before we knew it, the sun was setting on our vacation, and we were packing up the car to head home. Good night, moon. LINKING WITH: Best of the Weekend Keep In Touch Home & Garden Thursday
