Sugar People - MODELLING TIPS Now that my previous page has been merged with Sugar People, the posts on The Personal Cake Company have disappeared along with that page. Therefore, over the coming months I will update and re-post this advice as well as passing along more modelling tips that I hope will be of help. USING GUIDES TO GET THE PROPORTIONS RIGHT There is a myriad of information out there on body proportions. My advice is, at the very least, find a very basic guide that you can print out and keep to hand. It will be very useful in all sorts of ways: Realistic Figures It is fairly obvious how useful it could be for a general realistic figure, but it also helps to keep an eye on it even when working with photos of actual person. Sometimes the photos you have may not have the 'perfect' angles to give the body proportion so you can use it as a guide to stop you going off track and giving you a good idea as to what measurements should be. Caricatures Knowing how realistic body proportions work is very useful as a starting point in deciding how you want your caricature figures to look. The best stylised figures just change some of the elements of proportion. If you change everything you will end up with a figure that is not very pleasing to the eye. Taking things further ...... From basic proportions, you can (time permitting) delve further into the subject of human proportion to understand in detail how the human form works in still life, in action, details about how the body ages etc. This will all be helpful when you are moulding your models. Resources that you might helpful include :www.drawinghowtodraw.com jemorris.blogspot.uk (specifically children's bodies) design.tutsplus.com The attached proportion guide might be helpful to you (I am afraid I am not sure where I got from so cannot credit the author). I don't have a fine art background, and neither have I studied on a formal course so I am always trying to improve my knowledge. Usually it is by way of research for a specific figure, as like everyone else I don't have hours and hours to study the subject. Happy Modelling! Susan xx
