I have been papercutting for around 9 years now. I love the simplicity of making intricate artworks from just a single sheet of paper and nothing else, removing pieces to create lace-like images. I am influenced by the Art Deco period, which shows up quite often in my work.
I found these scherenschnitte freebies this morning after scouring the web. Okay if you want to have a go without the expense. I am going to do a class one day. Have a cheap and cheerful day. xxxRobby

*Now available as a print! Click here! About a year ago, my friend Marie commissioned me to do a papercut for her. She didn't have anything in mind at that time but she knew she wanted me to do something. Eventually she settled on something from Jabberwocky, a poem found in the Alice in Wonderland books. What she had wanted was for me to illustrate just the first stanza: `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. For some reason my listening skills were not up to snuff and I just thought she wanted me to illustrate the whole poem itself. This threw me for a loop. I had never really been into the Alice stories, although some of my best pieces have come from Lewis Carroll's mind. There's not really a description of the Jabberwocky itself, except that he has eyes of flame. So I spent the whole year fretting about what the Jabberwocky looked like and I couldn't imagine it. So last month I just sat down and got to work. Sometimes that's just what you have to do, you have to sit down and work and stop freaking out about things. And it took a while, but I finished it. I'm quite pleased with the results. Here is my papercut of the Jabberwocky, complete with toves, borogoves and mome raths: What does the Jabberwocky look like to you? Here's the poem if you're not familiar. `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe: All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe. "Beware the Jabberwock, my son! The jaws that bite, the claws that catch! Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun The frumious Bandersnatch!" He took his vorpal sword in hand: Long time the manxome foe he sought -- So rested he by the Tumtum tree, And stood awhile in thought. And, as in uffish thought he stood, The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame, Came whiffling through the tulgey wood, And burbled as it came! One, two! One, two! And through and through The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead, and with its head He went galumphing back. "And, has thou slain the Jabberwock? Come to my arms, my beamish boy! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!' He chortled in his joy. `Twas brillig, and the slithy toves Did gyre and gimble in the wabe; All mimsy were the borogoves, And the mome raths outgrabe.

I just moved into a new house and everything is so overwhelming so I'm trying to ignore the chaos and put some normality back into my life. I figured I'd do that by starting up exercising again. This silhouette was going to get pushed aside but I decided to take advantage of my new porch and the moonlight and the giant floodlights the old lady had put up who previously lived there and sketch a little something. I'm researching mushrooms for a different project I'm doing and thought I'd try out a little scene with that theme. Here's what the template will look like. Remember to cut out the gray areas first and then the outlined area in the back. Download your free scherenschnitte template here: Mushroom Bunny I cut this out at work and am using a different mat than I normally would use. This one doesn't suit me. If you are trying to use a craft knife to cut out your papercuts and it tears all the time, maybe try getting a different mat. It'll make a big difference.
San Francisco-based paper artist Kanako Abe creates elaborate, stylized portraits of animals and children using Ise-katagami, the traditional Japanese paper stencil technique for patterning kimono fabric. Abe learned Ise-katagami in 2012 and her creative interpretation treats paper as the finished product rather than simply a material in the process of image-making. The artist’s silhouettes of youth are also reminiscent of the Western tradition of creating silhouette portraits of a child’s profile. More

Mary Rolls Today we discussed Notan; the interaction of light and dark, or positive and negative, with the intent of creating an harmonious and unified composition where one does not dominate the other. Mary's collage is an example of a symmetrical arrangement of triangular shapes. By using only one shape family, Mary has created a very cohesive design. Furthermore, the slightly concave design and strong diagonals bring depth. Mike Koonce Mike's collage is an example of asymmetry. Notice how he has used similarity in shape (circles), scale or size change and variety (rectilinear and curvilinear shapes). The circles on the left dominate the composition by size as well as character; circles retain identity better than rectangles and squares because they contrast the format. In addition, the placement of the circles throughout establishes a rhythm that moves the eye.
Edit: Video added I am often asked about my paper cuts, many of you would like to know how I go about doing them. I begin with a piece of paper that measures 12" x 12" which is then folded......there are several sites that show how to create paper snowflakes, you can see the folding steps here Fold (you will notice in the following photos that the excess at the top gets cut away) I then draw the image I want to repeat. It will need to fit onto one section of the folded paper I unfold the paper and using a light box, transfer the image onto one section, then refold. I use a set of mirrors to see exactly what I will get once I have finished cutting The tools I use Staples hold the layers tightly together, punched holes allow for easier maneuvering of the scissors. Now, I am ready to make those cuts, small sharp scissors are an absolute must! More cuts are made...... notice that I am cutting so that I always have something solid to hold on to. I am showing you lots of photos so you can see that I "plan" each cut Cutting is complete Carefully unfold. It is delicate and must be handled gently Once I have it unfolded, I use a dry iron to press it flat. This one has 12 sections and is made up of birds and bees. Whatever you choose to draw, you need to be sure that everything is "connected" otherwise it will all just fall apart. Here is a video of the whole process Below is a sampling of some other themed papercuts I have created using this same method. Even though I had been designing this way, it had not occurred to me to cut snowflakes until I had taken a workshop conducted by Kathy K Wylie.....she takes "snowflakes"to a whole other level. If you seriously wish to create your own unique snowflakes and want to learn how to translate them into fabric, I suggest you get yourself a copy of Kathy K Wylie's book, Sewflakes
It's definitely Spring here in Utah and with Spring comes more leisurely walks in the park and longer walks under a starry sky. Here's to hopin' you find someone to enjoy the gradients at dusk with. This is what the template looks like. Those vines can get a bit tricky. Sometimes I find that the part that messes up my papercuts the most is the last part when I remove the scrap paper from the cut. I get all excited and if there are little veins still left connecting the paper, I tend to pull them rather than cut and that's when tears happen. So be patient until the very end. Endure! Paper cutting has been around since the 16th century. Different cultures have different names and different styles. In Switzerland, it is called scherenschnitte, German for “scissor cuts.” This traditional art involves cutting symmetrical shapes of paper to depict scenes of the Swiss countryside. Scherenschnitte is t
