The first week of school generally consists of getting to know one another, in addition to discussion and practice of classroom procedures and routines. We also got our creative juices flowing by creating summer reflection writing pieces, squiggle stories, and "All About Me" mini-posters. Students are getting to know one another and me, and we are learning to work together to build a successful and positive classroom environment. On Wednesday, I wrote out six questions, all having to do with how to make our classroom and ourselves function to the highest level, on six pieces of chart paper. Students, in groups of three, spent two minutes at each chart, collaborating and responding to each question on a sticky note. After all groups visited each chart paper station, I hung all of the charts up and we discussed each answer and noticed some very interesting trends. Here's the finished product, which you can click on to enlarge: Inspired by Life in 4B To tie into the previous activity, I was inspired by my wonderful teammates, Mrs. Fadden and Ms. Mattox, to develop at class pledge with my students. We reviewed our responses to the above questions, and then we put all of the ideas together to form a cohesive paragraph that we have all agreed will help us to remember why we are here at school and what our common goal is. Below is the rough draft of our class pledge (which I will type up, make pretty, and have all of my students sign): Since we were able to develop a class goal (to achieve success in third grade), I also had each student determine an individual goal after reading the story Matthew's Dream by Leo Lionni. I displayed our "Hopes and Dreams" for third grade near the classroom door, so that we can refer to, and revisit, them throughout the year. Lots of students are interested in learning how to sharpen their cursive skills, multiplication and division skills. I was very impressed by the number of students ready to take on our 40 book challenge! More on that later! Here's our class display of our hopes and dreams for third grade: Lastly, I read a book called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? The premise is that everyone carries an invisible bucket everywhere they go. When your bucket is "filled" you feel happy. When your bucket is "empty" you feel sad or upset. People can fill buckets by lending a helping hand, smiling, being kind, including others in games, and more. People can empty buckets by teasing, being ungrateful, acting disrespectfully, and more. I encourage my students to recognize the actions of bucket-fillers by writing them quick note and sticking it in their bucket display. This helps make everyone feel good. When we feel good, we want others to feel good. Therefore, kindess is passed from person to person. This is our bucket-filling display, complete with ways we can fill buckets and ways we can empty buckets: I look forward to more of these types of meaningful activities that promote teamwork, kindness, and achievement with your child!

I love the way we created our class agreements this year. First, students participated in a carousel activity where they went around the room to each poster. They had a pile of small post it notes that they used to respond to the questions- A Great Classmate, IS-DOES-SAYS-DOES NOT... A Terrific Teacher, IS-DOES-SAYS-DOES NOT... A Learner, IS-DOES-SAYS-DOES NOT... A Classroom of Learners, IS- LOOKS LIKE- FEELS... Then each group of 4 students looked at all of the responses and came up with their own class agreements. Finally, we put them all together and this is what they came up with. I think they did a great job!

This was an after school program I put on for kids at my library. There's this fantastic book that I wanted to share with the kids entitled, The Story of Buildings: From the Pyramids to the Sydney Opera House and Beyond. It's all about the history of architecture, with big fold-out illustrations of the world's most famous buildings. My original review for the book can be found here. So after a thorough book talk, we went through our own small history of buildings. First up, building with sticks and mud...or marshmallows: Kids got a certain number of toothpicks and marshmallows (anything they ate was just a handicap for them!) and got to building. Then, whoever built the sturdiest structure after a half hour won. We tested the strength with some skinny paperback books placed on top. The kids got to learn what sort of shapes were the sturdiest and why the ancients might have stuck to a pyramid shape. But then! What should come along in the history of architecture but...bricks? The competition this time was to build the tallest structure--but still sturdy! After a half hour, the kids would bring up their creations for testing on our "Lego Earthquake Table" This illustration and the instructions for making your own Lego Earthquake Table come from Scientific American. We ran out of time after that, but you can have all sorts of fun with architecture and engineering. Let the kids get creative! Back to School Tip #5 THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL Well, we are finally here. The last in my series of blog posts for Back to School Teacher Tips. Today, I want to share some advice about the first day of school. You want to make a good impression on students the first day of school. The key to this is to plan ahead and be prepared. Then, when that first day comes you are ready to greet those bright shiny faces as they walk into your classroom. Here are some suggestions to help your day go more smoothly: Greeting Students: Smile, shake hands and greet your students as they walk in your classroom. This makes them feel welcome and helps them feel more at ease. This is actually a good thing to do every day, not just the first day of school. Introductory Activity: Have an activity on their desks waiting for them or some instructions posted on the board/Smartboard for them to follow while they wait for all students to arrive and class to start. You don't want them to just be sitting around feeling nervous. This is an activity you could have waiting for them on their desks. This page gives them something they can complete as they wait for class to start, and that will give you some information about them to begin building a relationship. Click on the picture below to download a free copy of this New School Year Graphic Activity Page: This New School Year Graphic Activity Page is part of my 1st Day of School Packet that I sell on TPT. To see the entire packet, click on the picture below: Icebreaker Activity: Help your students get to know you and each other. Have an icebreaker activity prepared and ready. One activity you might try is called Tangled Web. Have students sit in a large circle. You start by holding a ball of yarn, introducing yourself and telling the class one fact about you. Then, hold on to the end of the yarn and throw or roll the yarn ball to another student across the circle from you. They say their name and a fact about themselves. Then they hold a part of the yarn and roll the ball to the next person. This continues until all students have shared and the yarn makes a tangled web figure. Classroom Rules, Expectations and Procedures: You want to begin to teach students these important expectations that I have discussed in my previous blog posts. But, you don't want to just start going down the list on the first day telling them what to do. You want to teach and model your expectations as they come up in your daily activities the first days and week of school. Start with your classroom environment. Briefly point out areas of your room, let them explore, but don't go into too many details until you are ready to use an area. Classroom rules are important for the first day, be sure to model and reinforce as much as you can this first week. Read Aloud: Read-Alouds are important for the entire school year, but I think especially so on the first day of school. Whether your students are in first or fifth grade, they love to hear their teacher read. I always bring my students to the carpet, so they are close and can see the pictures in the book. Some of my favorite picture book titles that can be read aloud on the first day are: Grades K-2nd: The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn First Day Jitters by Julie Danneberg Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes The Teacher from the Black Lagoon by Mike Thaler David Goes to School by David Shannon Tomorrow is the First Day of School by Maureen MacDowell Amelia Bedilia's First Day of School by Herman Parrish Grades 3rd-5th: Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes Oh the Places You'll Go by Dr. Suess Thank you Mr. Falker by Patricia Pollaco Homework by Arthur Yorinks This is the Way We Go to School by Edith Baer On the first day of school, you want to set the tone for your class for the rest of the year. Above all, relax, smile, have a great time and get to know your students. This should be a day to begin learning about your students and for them to learn about you.
