Books How the Camel got it's hump: Tales from Around the World by Justin Fontes Azad's Camel by Erika Pal Pamela Camel by Bill Peet Craft/Art Felt Camel Craft found here. Camel hand print found here. Fun Facts A camel drinks 30-50 gallons of water at one time and it only takes about 10 minutes to drink that much. Exactly how much a camel drinks varies with the size of the camel, it drinks about 80% of it's body weight. A camels hump is not full of water, it is actually fat. The hump allows the camel to survive up to two weeks with no food. Sally/Alice the camel is the only camel with more than 2 humps. "Real" camels can only have up to 2 humps. African camels have 1 hump and Asian camels have 2 humps. Game/Activity Fill up a pool or bath tub with 30 gallons of water and show the kids how much camels drink at one time. You could also have them help you fill it up a gallon at a time while counting to 30. The weather is starting to change where we live so we went on a walk and talked about how the leaves are changing and it's getting colder so now we need jackets. When we got home we unpacked the fall decorations and put them up together. This is a link I liked for reviewing the seasons with my son!
~Alex is 32 months~ A Buggy Day In the morning we went to our Messy Art playgroup and Alex had a lot of fun playing with shaving cream, making sand and seaweed muffins and creating some play dough masterpieces. Of course I ran out of the house with out my camera. So no pictures this week. One of these weeks I will remember it. The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle Amazon.com Widgets This is a favorite book of ours. We also watched the Youtube video, Alex really enjoyed it. Today we made this really cute handprint caterpillar, I got the idea from No Time For Flash Cards post. I also made Alex a spider color match game. Using some spiders I made out of styrofoam ball that were cut in half, paint, pipe cleaner legs and some googly eyes. I printed a web coloring book page and added a color circle on it. This game was really too easy for Alex. He imediately matched the spiders to the webs. At least they will be cute Halloween decorations. LOL I found a little more complex bee/ flower matching printout from here for Alex. He was able to complete it, and it was definitely more challenging for him.

Theme: Little Penguin’s Tale, by Audrey Wood Honey Pot is 2 years and 2 months old We are participating again in this summer’s Virtual Book Club! (See what we did last month with a book from Mo Willems!) This time we had to choose a story by Audrey Wood. I love how this is introducing us to new and wonderful authors that I might never have discovered otherwise. And our little library had a large selection of books from which to choose. We brought home Little Penguin’s Tale as well as Piggy Pie Po. It was so hard to choose just one of these for our activities. Both such cute stories! We ended up picking Little Penguin’s Tale, and read it often throughout the week. Tin Can Music First we did an activity related to the actual story. At one point Little Penguin happens upon some gooney birds, making music with tin cans and empty glass bottles. Well I had no glass bottles in the house, but I did have a nice supply of empty coffee cans awaiting some use! Honey Pot banged around on our little drums and made music and danced like the gooney birds! Ice Skating Like A Penguin I discovered this idea at Inner Child Fun! I attached some wax paper to the bottoms of Honey Pot’s feet, and let her slide around the carpet like a penguin on ice. She slid around and around her craft table so many times! It was a great way to get up and moving, and elicited lots of giggles! “I’m a penguin!” Webbed Feet/Fishing Here is another way we pretended to be penguins today. The idea comes from Making Learning Fun. I attached sandwich bags to Honey Pot’s hands with a rubber band, and let her run them through the water to feel what it might be like to have webbed feet. Then we added some fish and let her go fishing like a penguin! “Numm-y!” And of course…what does Honey Pot ever do but put her feet in this bin? Hey, they’re supposed to be webbed feet anyway! Cream Cheese Penguins In my search for penguin-related activities and crafts, I stumbled upon this adorable snack from a blog called Our Big Earth. How cute are these? Mine didn’t have such nice and round, white bellies as theirs…but they were cute anyway I think. Honey Pot got a kick out of them! And she is a huge fan of olives and carrots. I wasn’t sure how the cream cheese would taste with them though. And truth be told, neither of us was a huge fan of the taste combination. But I only made a few of them, so we snacked on olives and carrots after the initial tasting. Penguin Footprint Craft I discovered this idea on Pinterest, originating from Meet the Dubiens. A huge fan of hand and footprint art, I just had to do this with Honey Pot! We painted her foot black, made a print, then waited for the print to dry. In the meantime, I let her do some free painting so that she could enjoy the craft a bit more. Later I added the details then allowed her to glue googly eyes! I think it is so important for students to take ownership of their learning environment. I want the students to feel at home in our classroom and feel like it is their room. This year, I had the students create our alphabet chart so it was THEIR alphabet chart using their handprints. Students were so excited about this activity. Each student was able to create a letter so it became their letter. I added the little details that were finishing touches to each of the letters. It was such a fun project to complete! The students were so happy to see their handprints hung on the wall and it made them so excited about our alphabet chart since it was created by them. They enjoyed it so much, thay I also created a class handprint alphabet book for our classroom library. Is is such a great way to get students interested in learning the letters of the alphabet. This can also be made into students handprint alphabet books. You can check out this product in my TPT store by clicking on the image below. Included are directions and examples to make each of the letters, the letter and the word for each letter as well as a template for an alphabet book. For the posters, all consonants are in blue and vowels in red to help students learn to identify vowels. It is an editable product so if you have a different picture that you wish to use for one of the pictures, you will be able to! I also made little flashcards to match the handprint pictures. They can be used to help students learn letter names and letter sounds and also learn the vocabulary of the pictures. You can download the flashcards for free by clicking on the image below.
