Over 150 pages of engaging spelling and poetry activities that can serve a class for an ENTIRE YEAR! Can be easily integrated into any existing Literacy program. Aligned with the Science of Reading and UFLI programs. Hands on learning Spelling lists and poems can be paired with Literacy manipulatives or turned into games! Here are some ideas: Pair poems with I-Spy games that invite students to actively search for spelling patterns or words in parts of the poem. Conduct a word hunt by taking spelling words from the poem and placing them around the room. Leave words out of the poem and have students select words from a word bank and place them in the correct spot in the poem according to rhyming patterns. Integrate the poem into your morning message. Practice reading the poem as a whole or small group and allow students to circle words that start with the letter __, or rhyme with__ Use the spelling list words in a Literacy centre! Sort words into rhyming families or match a word to a picture How to introduce & instruct spelling words Small or whole group direct instruction: Call and repeat each word on the spelling list Segment each sound in each spelling word so students can gain an understanding for the spelling pattern and structure Sort words on the spelling list (according to rhyming pattern, beginning or ending letter...) Match each spelling word to a picture as a way for students to make a visual connection Use spelling words in reading, writing or manipulative Literacy centres How to invite students to practice poems Whole or small group 'morning message' - choral reading I-Spy words, letter sounds or rhyming patterns in the poem. Allow students to interact with the poem by underlining, circling or highlighting different parts. Poem sentence scramble. Break poem apart line by line. Have students put it back together in order (group or independent activity). Read poem to a peer in the class Omit some spelling words in the poem and have students fill in the blanks Send poems home to practice with families
Teaching heat transfer is a breeze with these six engaging radiation, conduction, and convection activities for middle school.
Spring is definitely my favorite time of year to teach Science! There are just so many hands-on concepts that are so interesting to the students. Plants, of course, is always so interesting because they are something the kids can see all around them and they all have some kind of experience with. First up, here are some of our centers we have going on during our study of plants. This first one is the same green mat as the one below, just with different sorting objects. This is our Spring Sensory Tub. So far, it contains flowers, pots, rubber bugs, and bug cards that the students can match with the rubber bugs. This seed matching center is one of my favorite Science centers. Each large card contains an empty seed packet and some seeds. The students find the small card with the same seeds and matches it to the large card. One of the student's favorite activities was going on a nature hunt and then using what they found to create their own nature collages. And of course, no study on plants would be complete without planting our own beans! We planted pinto and lima. (The clear cups make it easy to see how the roots grow!) Want to completely amaze your Kinders?! Just change white carnations into colored carnations with food coloring and water! At the end of our unit on plants, I split the students into five groups and they made posters to present to the class about what they learned. Watching them work together and figure it all out on their own is always my favorite part of group projects. I wrote the title for each group on a piece of paper, but the students did all the planning, writing and drawing on their own. "How to Plant a Seed" "Plant Needs" "What We Know About Plants" "Types of Plants" "Parts of a Plant" Update: I have created a Living & Nonliving Mini Unit to continue our study of living and nonliving things. You can see it on Teachers Pay Teachers, here. Or you can read about it on my newest blog post, here.
