Corrour is a remote 57,000 acre Highland estate on the edge of Rannoch Moor. Before the nineteenth century, it was a wilderness where shepherds summered their flocks and drovers took their cattle to market.
I wanted to design a map of Scotland which showed Shetland and Orkney in their correct geographical positions, as so often Shetland especially is added in a box to the side. You can see why of course, as the Islands stretch so far northwards, it means leaving alot of blank space on the page- but this was space that could have an illustration! I chose to include Scotland's National animal which is the Unicorn. The Unicorn is reputed to be 'unconquerable', and apart from innocent maidens, it seems only Scottish Kings or Queens had the power to master this creature- hence a Scottish Unicorn is traditionally depicted with a crown and chains. I've interpreted the Unicorn in my own way, and i hope he looks quite majestic as he towers over Scotland! Drawing the unicorn made me think of ancient places in Scotland too, so i've given the map a bit of an aged and worn look, and tried to include as many historical places as i could squeeze in. See how many you can spot! This is an A3 size digital print on 250gsm recycled paper, of SCOTLAND! Posted flat.
