Star books are such a great way to display atcs or photos, and they're not as difficult to make as you might think. Here's how to make a colorful 4 1/2" x 6" book like this one, perfect for spring-themed atcs or whatever you wish. Supplies Needed 2 pieces of sturdy matboard: 4 1/2" x 6" 2 pieces of cover paper for matboard cover: 6" x 7 1/2" Black pages, 7 pieces cardstock: 4 1/2" x 12" Small red filler pages: 14 pieces of cardstock: 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" Red pages, 7 pieces of cardstock: 4 1/2" x 9" Cream pages, 7 pieces of cardstock: 6 1/2" x 8" Beads for spine decoration (optional) 2 yards waxed linen thread At least 2 feet of ribbon for closure PVA glue Glue Stick Double Sided Tape Tracing paper Let's start with the cover. Using a glue stick, glue your matboard onto the wrong side of the cover paper you have chosen, and trim the corners as shown. Carefully fold the sides in and glue securely to the back of the cover. Decorate the covers any way you like. I used paper flowers and images from The Lovely Garden collage sheet from Alpha Stamps. Now, let's fold the first of your pages: the black pages and the small red filler pages. Fold the black pages in half so that you have 7 folded sheets measuring 4 1/2" x 6". Fold the small red filler sheets so that you have 14 folded sheets that are 4 1/2" x 1 1/4". These are the pages that will actually be sewn, with the red papers inside the fold of the black page. Make a template for your stitching out of tracing paper. Mark the top and bottom of the pages, and make four marks for the holes you will punch. The top and bottom holes (end holes) should be about 1/2" from the edge of the pages, and the two center holes should be about 1 1/2" from the edges. Use this template to punch holes in each of the seven nested signatures with an awl or needle punch. Each signature should have one black sheet, with two of the smaller red sheets nestled within. Thread your waxed linen with two needles, one at each end. Take the first signature (one black page with two red pages inside) and thread the needles from the inside to the outside through the two center holes. Then cross the needles and thread them back through the center holes towards the inside of the signature. Bring each needle back to the outer spine of the signature through its closest end hole. Now add the second signature. Thread the two needles through the corresponding end holes to the inside of the second signature from the outside spine, and pull the thread fairly snug. On the inside of this signature, thread each needle through its nearest center hole to the outside of the spine. On the 2nd, 4th, and 6th signature, add beads if desired. Thread them through one needle and then thread the other needle through the beads before going back through the center hole to the inside of the signature. Then, thread the needles back out through the end holes as before. Continue sewing each set of your seven signatures in this way. On the pages that don't have beads, just cross the threads before going back through the center holes. When you have added the last signature, you will end up with the needles on the inside of the pages in the center holes. Tie the threads off with a square knot. Whew! That was the most tedious part. When the book is closed, you will have six sets of black pages that are back to back. Using a glue stick, carefully glue these six sets together, so that each set makes one page. Set the book under some weights to let it dry. Meanwhile, fold your remaining pages. Fold the red pages in half so that you have seven 4 1/2" x 4 1/2" pages. Fold the cream pages in half for seven 6 1/2" x 4" pages. Fold the 6 1/2" side of the cream paper up two inches to make a pocket. This page should now be 4 1/2" x 4". If you wish, round the corners of the pocket with a corner punch. Then, using a thin doublestick tape, affix tape to the outside edges of the pockets where they will fold up. Attach double stick tape to the outside edges of all the red pages where they will affix to the black. Attach the taped outside edge of each red page to the outside edge of a black page. Make sure the edges line up well. Press firmly to adhere. When all the red pages have been attached, go back and attach the outside edge of the cream pages to the edges of the red pages in the same manner. Once all your pages are affixed, attach ribbons to the outer sides of your book block with double stick tape. Glue the covers to the book block, using PVA glue. Make sure that the covers are lined up and the edges are affixed well. Put the book under heavy weights, and allow that glue to dry! Now you have a beautiful Star book with a beaded spine. Decorate the inside pages and fill it with your favorite little works of art. You can change the dimensions of the cover and pages to make any size book. Here's one I made with triangular pockets and extra embellishments to hold "Comedians in B&W" atcs.

Good morning, Crafters! I have a sweet, summertime tutorial for you today! If you are trapped inside with the air conditioning roaring, then it's the perfect time to whip up this little cutie! My monthly mini showcases the Authentique Summertime Collection! This is the perfect collection for these hot, humid, end-of-summer days! This summer collection comes with six different sheets and 12 patterns, However, the collection has TWO sheets of cut-aparts, Summertime Five and Summertime Six. If you purchase the paper pad, you get four of each pattern. That is plenty of paper to make this mini album! This mini is 5" tall and 3 1/2" wide (similar to the Meadow Mini Album, shared HERE). There are three pages, with lots of fold-outs and flaps, plus TWO waterfall sections! Let's get started on the tutorial. Cut two pieces of medium weight chipboard to 5" x 3 1/2". Cut one piece of chipboard to 5" x 1". Trim dark blue cardstock to 7" x 10 1/4" and attach the chipboard pieces to the cardstock as shown above. Make sure to maintain a 1/8" gap between the spine piece and the cover pieces of chipboard. Trim the cardstock corners at an angle and attach double-sided adhesive to the tabs. Wrap the chipboard as shown. Gently fold the covers while scoring in the 1/8" gutter (or channel) between the spine and the covers. Trim decorative paper to fit over the center spine section. Do this BEFORE adding your hinge mechanism. DO NOT add paper to your inside covers until AFTER you add your hinge mechanism. Create a hinge mechanism from dark blue cardstock. Cut the cardstock to 4 1/4" x 4 1/2". (The 4 1/4" measurement is the height of the hinge.) Score on the longer side at: 1", 1 1/8", 1 3/8", 1 5/8", 2", 2 1/4", 2 1/2", 2 7/8", 3 1/8", 3 3/8", 3 1/2". This will make three hinges that are 1/4" all with a 3/8" space between hinges. Attach the hinge to the spine of the book. Line up the scored 1/8" "gutters" on your hinge to the gutters on your album. Gently burnish and fold all your score lines. Trim decorative paper to add to the inside of your covers. Trim three pieces of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and add one piece to each hinge. Glue these "base pages" to the left side of each hinge. (Don't worry. Your decorative papers will cover the other side of the hinge.) Create a waterfall section for the front cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous page. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the first base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap, then the right flap to finish the first base page. Turn the page and work on the BACK of the first base page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 5/8" x 3 1/8" and score on the bottom at 1/4" from the edge. Round the top corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the bottom edge of the BACK of the first base page. Add a pocket to the bottom of the second base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flip the second base page over and work on the BACK. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 5 1/2" and score on the long side at 2" and 5 1/4" from the left edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the second base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the right edge of the second base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the right flap, then the accordion fold the left flap to finish the second base page Add a pocket to the bottom of the THIRD base page. Cut dark blue cardstock to 2 3/4" x 3 7/8" and score on three sides at 1/4" from the edges. Fold on the score lines and attach the pocket to the page as shown. Flop the page and work on the BACK of the last page. Cut a piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the right edge. Round the left-hand corners. Attach the 1/4" tab to the left edge of the third base page. Cut a second piece of dark blue cardstock to 4 7/8" x 3 3/8" and score on the long side at 1/4" from the left edge. Round the right-hand corners. Attach the flap to the right edge of the first base page. Add magnets as desired. Close the left flap to finish the last base page. Create a waterfall section for the inside back cover. Trim the dark blue cardstock to 4" x 3 1/8". Score each piece at 1/4" from the top edge. Use a corner rounder to round the bottom edges. Cut four waterfall pages. Attach the first to the top edge of the dotted paper by the 1/4" tab. Add each waterfall page just under the previous. Add magnets to keep the waterfall closed. Now your mini book is ready to decorate! I trimmed a piece of white, adhesive-back canvas to cover the spine of my book. Then, I added the yellow and white dotted paper to the front and back covers. I kept the cover simple by adding a word grid sticker and a bit of pretty ribbon. (The sticker is VERY OLD and I have no idea where it's from!) I double-matted the sticker and added it to a bit of scrap chipboard before gluing it to the cover. I found the cute crab button in my stash and thought he would like to end his days decorating the bow! I used a banner die to cut out the spine decor. I used a Tim Holtz brad to dangle some charms from the spine. (I have a bin of charms and a bin of beads, most of which have been with me since the early 1990's! I add to them from time to time, so I really don't remember where these particular items came from!) I added the fun Summertime papers to the inside sections of my book, and then just added a few stickers and other bits and bobs to decorate each page. The Summertime cut-aparts are the perfect size for my pages... and to fit into the pockets! I have no idea how long I've had some of these stickers! I almost never reach for stickers, but I am happy I still had these in my stash as they worked perfectly for this little book! I found clear stickers, and 3-D sticker, and word art...just a treasure trove! With TWO waterfall features, there is a lot of space for photos and journaling! If you want to see each page, watch my little walk-through video below! I hope you are inspired to beat the heat and make a little end-of-summer mini! Thanks for joining me today! I have a ton of paper scraps laying around (yes, I have a paper problem ;)) from various projects. I also have a ton of Project Life cards that I've collected over time (at this point, I do not do Project Life - I reallllly want to try it come January 1. I love the idea of it. Love it). So what better to do than put them into a little album?! I made these up over the course of 36 hours and love them. I put these in my shop, but plan on making a few more for family and friends for Christmas. Perfect to throw in your purse or bag and jot a note or thought. Any types of paper would do - old junk mail envelopes deconstructed and cut down, card stock or scrapbooking paper (if you have a local craft store, you would only need a few sheets -- you can get 12 pages out of one 12"x12" piece of scrapbooking paper. Use some chipboard (or cut down a cereal box :)), and finish off with binder rings (available at office supply stores - or I have some available in my shop here), or use ribbon! Voila! A cute little book that's fun to jot in :)
