I have a new mini album to share today! This one features my Heart Squash Mini Album cut file and the Let Your Heart Decide collection by Pinkfresh Studio. First, here is a video showing how to assemble the base of the Heart Squash Mini Album and then a flip through of my finished book about our day in Amberg, Germany. For the cover I machine stitched around the edge then painted a layer of gesso on top. I splashed black watercolors around and then created a cluster of embellishments including mini alphabet stickers to say "amberg". To keep the album closed I cut tiny slits into the sides on the front and back and wrapped baker's twine around with a bow tied over the embellishment cluster. For the inside I cut three base pages from smooth white cardstock and then cut all the inner pieces from the Let Your Heart Decide patterned papers. Before adhering them in place I pierced holes for stitching. I did a chain link stitch through the square pieces and was planning to add hand stitching to the half heart pieces but decided it would make the album too thick. I like the texture the holes add though. On the left most square seen above I only placed adhesive on three edges to turn it into a pocket since that photo of the skinny red building has a lot of interesting history behind it that I wanted to include. I kept the embellishing pretty simple and simply added a sticker or two to every half heart section and tucked a few tab stickers here and there. If a sticker was too long to fit one section I let it go across two sections and the album still collapses. I wanted to include way more than four photos so I had to think of a way to do that. I figured out how to machine stitch photos and cardstock squares together using a zigzag stitch and then they fold over each other into a single layer - you can see what this looks like in the video at the beginning. Here are all four main photo sections opened up all the way to reveal hidden photos and journaling. Here is what the album looks like when opened, without opening the interactive photo bits. The photos are held shut with velcro adhesive dots. Details of opening each of the four interactive photos. I was able to include about 20 photos this way and journaling to go along with the pictures. For the journaling I just copied and pasted the text from our blog post recap of Amberg into a new document, changed the font to Remington Noiseless, printed it out, trimmed it into strips, then adhered the strips with liquid glue. That was probably the most time consuming part of this whole process. If there were empty spots on the journaling squares I filled them in with stickers and trimmed the excess. Here is the open album with all of the photos opened. So many layers! I completed this album over about 5 days, working on it in spurts, but if I had to put an actual time on it I think it took about 6 or 7 hours. Not too bad and it was tons of fun and so easy with the help of the Heart Squash Mini Album cut file! I can't wait to see how you use it! Let me know if you have any questions, thanks for stopping by! Here's hoping that all of you that celebrate Thanksgiving had a wonderful gathering with friends/family! Today I'm sharing a mini album that I made a few months ago with the use of Authentique's 'Legacy' collection. I call this mini a 'Tri-Fold Mini Album'. It's a relatively simple album to make but provides the access to store several pictures, journaling & even a sentiment if so desired. These pictures of me & my son were taken this past Mother's Day. I loved all the different action shots & wanted to showcase them in a quick & simple way. While navigating through Pinterest, I found a tutorial for this sort of mini album. I'll supply the list to this tutorial at the end of the post as well as a brief video showcasing this mini. The tutorial is in French--but luckily with the help of 3 years of French taken at college & the photos provided in the tutorial I was able to easily create this mini. What I liked the most about this mini is that you can either store it closed or display it on a desk or shelf standing up as shown in this screen shot. I have my mini album displaying on my desk at work. So this mini also makes for a nice keepsake or gift. The photo shown here is of the back of the mini where I've included two photos of my son & husband along with 1 pocket to store journaling and 1 sentiment. This mini is designed to hold 8+ photos--depending on your needs/preferences. Each square measures 3" inches x 3" inches--so the photos measure about 2 3/4" inches x 2 3/4" inches. The album itself measures 3 1/4" inches wide by 9" 1/4" inches high & it has medium chipboard covers. For those of you that are saavy with the paper & scissors--here's the link to the tutorial. UPDATE: It was brought to my attention that the link to the original tutorial I used to create this album is no longer available. Therefore, I created my own video tutorial. :-) You can find the tutorial here or you can click on the video itself below. Here's a video showcasing the mini. Here's the link to the tutorial. Supplies: Paper - Authentique, Embellishments - Prima, Ribbon - May Arts, Flowers - The Felt Shoppe, Prima, Other - Medium Weight Chipboard Thanks for stopping by & enjoy the rest of the week!
I started a project a few years ago when I was pregnant with my second child. He's about to turn 4! Am I done? Not even close, but I knew starting it would take me
Sure, we've all heard of or tried aging paper with tea but what happens when you dump your used morning coffee grounds (grinds) on paper to see if that works too? That's what I wanted to know. For the experiment, I used five sheets of paper; two regular pieces of copy paper and three pieces of medium weight card stock. Actually, the three heavier pieces came from the office supply store in a pack and I think they call it "cover stock" there. The card stock already had a mottled look to it which helped. In the photo above, it is pictured across the top and the white pieces are the copier paper. I should have used a lot more newspaper to protect the floor since this experiment got kinda messy. One piece of card stock and one piece of copy paper got crumpled into balls and then flattened back out before having the coffee grounds dumped on them. At first, just the used coffee grounds were scattered fairly heavily on all the papers and lightly rubbed in. After a while of sitting with the grounds on top, I wondered if the grounds would work better if they were wetter, so the middle card stock and the bottom right copy paper got a drink of coffee too. Well, yikes, everybody got a drink of coffee 'cause it migrated through the newspaper to some degree to all the papers. Lesson learned: if you don't want some of the papers to get wet, put them on separate pads of newspaper. As the coffee grounds dried, they got shaken off so I could see if anything was actually happening to the paper. If you are more patient than me, you could just leave the coffee grounds sitting on the paper longer. I'm sorry to say that neither of the copier papers lived through the experiment...they were not heavy enough. When the remaining papers dried more, a brush was used to get some of the more embedded coffee grounds out/off. Now we have The Crumpled, The Wet, The Dry left. (Remember the Clint Eastwood movie, "The Good, The Bad, The Ugly"?) The Dry is not really dry because it got wet from underneath from the coffee-soaked newspaper. The Crumpled The Wet The Dry The Dry The Wet The Crumpled The coffee grounds' effect is softer in The Wet because they were diluted and dispersed more. On The Dry the grounds embedded more and were more obvious. The Crumpled had to be ironed to be flat enough to run through the copier. Actually, since the iron was hot, I just ironed all of them. The papers were a little thicker after all the moisture they had been subjected to, so they needed to be fed into the copier one at the time and given just a tiny push to make sure that the "grabber" on the copier could catch them. The Dry The Crumpled The Wet The papers were used in a St. Patrick's Day display. All of the papers used in the display had a sort of aged look but the ones aged with the coffee grounds looked (and actually felt) like old papers. The Crumpled The Wet The Dry (I should have taken a better "before" picture of the card stock but you can see in the above picture on the edges what it looked like before much aging. Also, this paper used in the display is not exact but has a similar mottled look to the original.) So, if you want to put your used coffee grounds to good use, age some paper with them for future projects!
