SKYLAR FEIN was born in Greenwich Village and raised in the Bronx. He has had many careers including teaching nonviolent resistance under the umbrella of the Quakers, working for a gay film festival in Seattle, stringing for The New York Times and as pre-med student at University of New Orleans where he moved one week before Hurricane Katrina hit. In the wreckage of New Orleans, Fein found his new calling as an artist, experimenting with color and composition of the detritus of Katrina. His work soon became known for its pop sensibility as well as its hard-nosed politics. After a few starring roles in group shows, he had his first solo show in May 2008 at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery in New Orleans. In the fall of 2008, his Prospect.1: Biennial installation, "Remember the Upstairs Lounge," shined a spotlight on an overlooked piece of New Orleans history: a fire that swept through a French Quarter bar in 1973, killing everyone inside. The worst fire in New Orleans history has never been solved. His installation walked visitors right through the swinging bar doors, and offered visual riffs on politics and sexuality circa 1973. The piece was praised in ArtForum, Art In America, The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker, among others. In late 2009, Fein had his first solo museum show, "Youth Manifesto," at the New Orleans Museum of Art. The exhibition was an ode to punk rock as a force for social and cultural upheaval. True to form, the opening reception was shut down by police responding to the look of the unlikely art-going crowd. In March 2010, Jonathan Ferrara Gallery presented Fein's solo installation, “Skylar Fein: Rise of the Youth Front" at VOLTA Art Fair in New York during Armory Week. This installation drew thousands of people and delved into revolutionary politics past and present, a continuing theme in Fein's work. In May 2010, Fein was invited by the New York curatorial project No Longer Empty to recreate his "Remember the Upstairs Lounge" installation in a vacant Chelsea space. The exhibition, once again, drew thousands of visitors and sparked renewed interest in this piece of history. In September 2011, Fein exhibited over eighty new works in his solo exhibition Junk Shot at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery, New Orleans. This exhibition embodied this artist’s turn towards formalism and art historical reference while maintaining Fein’s iconic sensibilities and aesthetic. Fein's solo exhibition "Beckett at War" in September 2012 at C24 Gallery in Chelsea was praised by The Village Voice as one of the top ten exhibitions of the year in New York. He then followed up with his November 2013 installation of "The Lincoln Bedroom" which received wide media attention. Fein unveiled his “Giant Metal Matchbook” series in his 2014 solo exhibition at Jonathan Ferrara Gallery and exhibited another, larger suite of these acclaimed sculptures in a solo exhibition at the gallery in 2015 and VOLTA NY 2016. Since then, the series has been exhibited nationally at art fairs such as, Art Miami, Miami Project, Art on Paper NYC, Seattle Art Fair, Texas Contemporary, and Art Market San Francisco. He continues to exhibit nationally as part of the Guns in the Hands of Artists exhibition (Washington D.C., St. Louis, Minneapolis, Miami, Fairfield,CT and Aspen), and has an exhibition of his photography forthcoming in Houston.

GLASS ROCKS SHOWN ARE EXAMPLES. EACH ROCK IS UNIQUE. They say it only takes one person to change a policy and we ran into that one person. We have been selling these raw "slag" glass rocks now for several years and one person apparently thought they were getting the Hope Diamond. Please do not order without reviewing all the photos, which are only EXAMPLES and fully reading the description*. These items are NOT of the actual piece you will receive as we took a random sample to demonstrate the vast differences of shape, color, occlusion and clarity. This listing is for a raw glass rock. This is raw glass that is made from recycled glass bulk. The glass was melted, poured out into massive sheets, placed in a cool temperature bunker where it proceeded to crack. From there the pieces are broken down further and sorted by size/weight. These are: * NOT Gem stones! It is glass. While some have better clarity than others, their beauty is in their raw, organic form. * NOT Smooth and polished. It is a supply item that happens to be vintage. You certainly can polish them and even tumble them if you like, but their raw organic shape and intense color make them absolutely gorgeous to catch light, add to an aquarium, your garden, a windowsill or to make collages or windchimes with. Naturally this is just a partial list of what can be done with them, they are for your imagination! * NOT appropriate for children unless they are a display item for educational purposes to discuss the glass making process. * SHARP! When the glass fractures it does so in a conchoidal fashion. This means the fracture is shell or fan shaped. This adds to the beauty as sometimes these conchoidal fractures have wonderful ripples and refract light in a prismatic fashion! * NOT andara glass. But a quick search will pull up "Andara Crystals" and they are hundreds and at times, thousands of dollars! The sellers of andara are stating that lightning hits sand (silica) and the intense blast of energy forms the "Andara Crystals". While lightning does hit sand and can create some outrageous pieces, it does not cause the "glass" to become blue, red, green, turquoise, etc! However, these are identical on a molecular and mineral basis to what is being sold as Andara Crystals. * Often found with tiny bubbles, ripples of color, and even some "artifacts". I have see what appears to be chewed up bubble gum before, hunks of raw silica, bubble holes, etc. Yes, an insect has been seen, but I am starting my own extinct animal farm from these..... * NOT poured or formed or hand blown. It is a rock of pure glass that broke up and is quite random and organically shaped. Because SLAG Glass has many meanings and these meanings have evolved, I will explain what we mean by SLAG GLASS. Again, it is recycled glass from bottles, panes, headlights, glasses, pressed glass and other forms of glass. It is melted down, colorant added (in our case blues and greens), mixed up (not perfectly in some cases) and poured into massive sheets where it gets placed in a cool bunker to cool and crack to its heavenly form! (During this process, tiny bubbles may form and remain in "solidified" form. Some are quite dense while others are scarce and random). From there it gets further broken into size and weight classes. These are absolutely stunning rock/boulders and crystals of raw glass. Some glass artist purchase this type of raw glass and melt it down further for their purposes; destined to become stained glass, drink wear, plates, panes, etc. Due to the natural variances of the glass, some may be deeper or lighter in color. We buy this glass in 1 ton bags where we make Glass Gabions that are back lit. This listing is not suitable for you to make your own large Gabions, as they are sold in singles or small lots. Please start a convo if interested in purchasing a large quantity for this purpose. If you have a special intention and would like to make a request, we welcome this but we cannot polish or tumble the rocks. Some requests have been that we find a rock that has at least one flat surface, presumably to mount it over a light source. This is a realistic request. Darker blue or lighter blue, also realistic. Flawless clarity--not realistic. If you like the bubbles, there are some that actually have a foamy surface of bubbles, and I can certainly look for one for you. Rocks without some ding marks, not realistic. However, you WILL find them interesting, alluring, pretty to place in an aquarium, fountain, pool water feature, on a light source or in front of natural light. They are pretty cool! One last note: I take all of our photos myself with a Samsung Galaxy S10e. I only use the onboard software to make any adjustments to photos I take. These adjustments only include crop, contrast and saturation. I only adjust contrast and saturation so that the picture closely resembles what my naked eye sees. I do not have Photo Shop, so nothing ever gets "shopped". I show images of the rocks in the sun, as this is one of the most probable methods of displaying the rocks. I show them on windowsills and in small groups to demonstrate the wonderful play of color. Once again, these are NOT gemstones! They are packed in massive sacks to ship to us and they will rub up against one another making chips and dings. I hand wash each one, wrap it well and package it either alone or with the others you purchase. Did I mention these are not gem stones? 🤔 For PROJECT MIX, this is a money saving option and will give you 9 rocks that are in the 850-1000 gram range. Patinated concrete sculpture. Concrete base, insertion of an old nail and objects gleaned from my walks.
