We've been transfixed by all things Danish for the last couple of years, haven't we? While you wait for season three of the Killing, plunge into We, The Drowned, the astonishing sea-faring epic novel by Danish novelist Carsten Jensen in which a young man searches the world for his father, a sailor, who returned from fighting the Germans in the Treårskrigen a changed man and immediately disappeared again - Albert's hunt take him all over a brilliantly described world from Newfoundland to Samoa. The relationship between father and son, Laurids and Albert Madsen, is only one of the threads that...

I've deliberated and chosen my favorite nonfiction children's books of 2022 with the criteria of excellent writing, an interesting topic, eye-catching illustrations or designs, and all-around engagement.

The sun is beating down here in South Carolina, which means my mind drifts more and more to the cool depths of the sea, salty breezes, and the cries of pelicans. I’ve always enjoyed reading books about the ocean in the summer, no doubt due to family vacations spent at the Gulf of Mexico. The […]
“The deep blue water of the open sea far from land is the color of emptiness and barrenness; the green water of the coastal areas, with all its varying hues, is the color of life.”

Deep in the Ocean is a one-of-a-kind book perfect for any child fascinated by the sea and sea creatures. In the book a scientific team has boarded the submarine Oceanos to explore the ocean’s depths. Suddenly, it gets caught in a violent storm, causing it to drift thousands of miles off-course.
