Just a reminder that there are a few hours left of the big back to school sale on TpT! Everything in my store is up to 28% off with promo code BTS13 :) Today was a really good day with our new 2nd graders! We did a lot of community building and worked on our first craftivity! First, we read one of my favorite back to school books, Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. After we read the book, we graphed the syllables in our names. We gave each kiddo a sticky note and had them write their names on them. The kids took turns saying their names, and as a class we counted the syllables in each child's name. Then they hung up their sticky note in the appropriate column. This activity also let us review each other's names :) Due to time, we didn't have the kids make their own graphs, but I do have everything you would need in my Fun With Kevin Henkes & Friends! pack! After we made our class graph, we worked on the cute craftivity to go along with the book {you can find it in Fun With Kevin Henkes & Friends! or in my Back to School MEGA Pack!}! Students had to count the number of letters, consonants, vowels, and syllables in their names. Then they wrote why their name was special. Some of their responses were PRECIOUS!! I am sharing some of my favorites with you :) I like my name because I'm named after a movie star. I like my name because I am named after Esther in the Bible. I like my name because my name sounds good. I like my name because it is named after Reese's Puffs. I like my name because I am named after my great grandpa. I like my name because my name is named after a baseball player's last name. In the afternoon, we read Have You Filled a Bucket Today? and talked all about bucket filling!! I think this is such an important subject to spend time on because it really helps build an awesome classroom community! After we read and discussed the book, Amy demonstrated how hurtful words or actions can't be taken back, even if we say sorry. She squeezed out some toothpaste each time a child gave an example of bucket dipping. After most of the toothpaste was squeezed out, we called students up to try and put the toothpaste back in tube {using toothpicks}. It was hard to do, and we couldn't put the toothpaste back. I think the kids really got it :) Then we made two anchor charts; bucket dippers and bucket fillers. Our class decided that we should crumple up the Bucket Dippers chart and throw it away! The last thing we did was work on was the Bucket Filling and Bucket Dipping sort that can be found in my Back to School MEGA Pack! The kids did great! I am so excited to start letting the kids fill each other's buckets :) Tomorrow we are going to start our first day of Daily 5! We use Daily 5 for Dummies to help us pace our lessons :) It is definitely worth it to google it, especially if you are just starting out!! I will post more about that soon! GIVEAWAY TIME!!! A couple weeks ago, you all helped me get to 200 followers in my TpT Store! THANK YOU!!! :) I can't wait to do the same thing on this little blog of mine :) I promised you a giveaway! Off to dance class for the little one in a few, but wanted to post a few pics to share :) Got my first Vistaprint order today! So you know I had to share! The first one are I Pick rack cards that I'm going to use to help my kids find just right books. They are supposed to shop in the mornings for them... but alas, they've strayed from the course... we had a come to meeting this afternoon about proper IDR/book shopping etiquette. We'll see how it goes tomorrow... I had this (see below) as a poster all ready to print and put on my book cart, but thought, why not make a small magnet from it? So that's what I did! The fonts are from GingerSnaps and the border from Ms. Fultz's Corner, and the clipart is KPM Doodles... hope I didn't go against any TOU!! And finally, one more anchor chart! Our phonics skill this marking period is r-controlled vowels... so we did a little brainstorming the other day.... Off to ballet!!! Oh, and I've been boo'ed.... will get to that sometime this weekend!!

Soooo homework. Yeah. Isn’t that a tricky subject? After a dozen years of teaching here is my philosophy on homework. The general rule is 10 minutes of homework for every grade level. That would be 20 minutes for 2nd grade. I don’t include reading at home when I’m talking about homework. So I expect 20 ... Read more
This literacy menus freebie is a sample of my Literacy Contracts. This literacy choice activity board provides students with the opportunity to become independent learners, and to have choice in their learning. That way they are more likely to be engaged and on task. The literacy menu can easily be incorporated into your daily literacy centers, early finishers or homework. Students select an activity whilst you work with a small group on guided reading/writing. Students select 2 or 3 boxes to work on a day during your literacy block. Once they have completed a box they color their box in with a colored pencil. They work independently on each task while the teacher pulls out groups for guided reading/writing. Alternatively the literacy contract could be used as a 'Tic Tac Toe' activity, where students select an activity, and mark a cross or circle in each box once completed. The goal is to have 3 crosses or circles in a row horizontally, diagonally or vertically. Activities included in the contract: • Read to Self - students re-read a book from their guided reading group and complete the activity. • Silent reading - select a book from the bookshelf to read independently. • Buddy Reading - Choose a buddy to read a book with • 3 spelling boxes - different spelling activities on each contract. • 1 vocabulary box - different vocab activity each contract. • Labeling - students draw and label a different picture each week. • Journal writing - students write a recount about their weekend. The literacy contract is very user friendly and easy for students to understand with visual cues in each box. Teacher instructions are also included. You can check out my previous post on the book Sneaky Spinach here! As soon as I read Spaghetti in a Hot Dog Bun the first time, I fell in LOVE with Maria Dismondy! Her books are absolutely amazing and all teach different character lessons in a kid-friendly way! When Maria asked if she could send me her newest book, The Jelly Donut Difference, my heart was so happy! I couldn't wait to read the newest book in her amazing collection and come up with a fun way to use it in my classroom! This book is so cute! I read it to my own two kids before I read it to my classroom kids and I loved being able to discuss ways to sprinkle kindness at home and at school! This book is too cute! It is all about Leah and Dexter, two siblings that can't seem to get along! With a little help from a neighbor and some special donuts, the siblings learn what is really important in life and learn to spread kindness and smiles! How absolutely ADORABLE is Maria Dismondy!? Maria has a background in early education and is commited to teaching the importance of character building, which allows her to touch lives all over the world! She travels as a public speaker to schools, community forums, and national conferences! When she is not busy writing or speaking, she is at home in Michigan with her family! My class and I had SO much fun with this book and the activities that we did! If you follow my blog or social media accounts, you can see how much I love spreading kindness and positivity! After we read The Jelly Donut Difference we brainstormed ways that we can {sprinkle kindness} as a class! How sweet are these ideas!? Then, my students wrote about how they can sprinkle kindness and enjoyed their very own jelly donut! I just got jelly donut munchkins from Dunkin Donuts!
