This PowerPoint begins describing how the muscular and skeletal systems work together. A brief description of energy use and movement is provided with visuals. A link to a cool video that just shows some great examples of movement and muscles (gymnastics). Students then guess the number of muscles in the human body and the answers are revealed. A step by step sequence describes how blood vessels are woven into the muscular system to deliver food and oxygen and remove CO2 and waste. Action potential is briefly addressed and a link to video that shows a mind controlled prosthetic limb is provided. The three types of muscles (smooth, skeletal, cardiac) are addressed in a step by step sequence and students match the type of muscle to the correct picture. Voluntary and involuntary muscles are addressed and students again choose between pictures. Muscle fibers are described with visuals. An activity is built-into the slideshow that has students simulate the contraction of muscles with their hands. Directions included. A reference to Form Follows Function is made. The bicep and tricep are then focused on with the contraction of one muscle and relaxation of another. How smooth muscles work is described and an activity has the students move a golf ball (food) through a trash bag on a table using only their fist (some water and dish soap needed). Connective tissue is addressed here (Also a part of the skeletal system PowerPoint) and a stand up quiz is presented. After students learn about Tendons and Ligaments, they see a picture of one or the other. If they think it is a tendon they make a "T" and if it is a Ligament the make an "L" with finger and thumb. Answers are provided as well as a fun bonus "Achilles". A link to a virtual tour of the muscular system is provided. A quiz opportunity is provided that has the students name some common muscles in the human body. A box highlights and points to a muscle. Teacher can call upon table groups or students to answer. Next slide reveals the muscle. This repeats so all students can participate. A comedic visual quiz is provide that has the students name 10 different muscles on Sylvester Stallone throughout his movies of the 80's. Answers are provided in a step by step process. The students will really enjoy the quiz. A chicken leg dissection with instructions are provided and students record a provided spreadsheet into their notebook. Directions take students through the entire chicken leg dissection one step at a time and visuals are provided. Color coded text makes following instructions a snap. The visuals are very helpful. Answers to the spreadsheet are provided at the end and covered one at time as not to overwhelm. Please make sure to wear goggles, gloves, and disinfect / warn about contamination / pathogens. Chicken should be refrigerated before and after. Dispose of properly. A series of questions review the activity with visuals and a 1-5 end of the PowerPoint Quiz is provided with answers following. A series of hidden box games conclude this PowerPoint that have the students guess a relevant picture that is hidden beneath shapes. Each slide removes more of the obstructions to the picture. This is a really exciting and interactive PowerPoint that you and your students will enjoy. -Thanks -Note, students should have some knowledge of the skeletal system / joints for parts of the chicken leg dissection. I do offer a skeletal system PowerPoint if interested. Human Body and Health Topics Unit on TpT Human Body Systems and Health Topics Unit This Unit includes all of the following...
