The student will find the system of Grading herein expounded simple and entirely free from complication. All which might have a tendency to mislead the student, has been eliminated so that every line drawn and applied may be easily grasped and perfectly understood. Preface In publishing the AMERICAN PATTERN GRADER, it is not the purpose of the author in any way particularly to advocate cutting by proportion in spite of the fact that he considers the knowledge of this art indispensable to him who proclaims himself a competent cutler and wishes to be considered so by his fellow workers. It is and always will be, the wisest and best method to adopt drafting to measure where this is possible. In other words, the cutter who has the time to devote to each individual and is remunerated adequately for such services should never cut but by special measure. For the cutter, however, who is engaged in wholesale tailoring work or such work where prices are of a nature necessitating quick results, drafting by proportion, popularly known as " The Use of Block Patterns," becomes a necessity. In order to thoroughly master the art of using block patterns, it becomes necessary first to learn how to grade, as the former is the result of the latter. In the lessons following this page, it will be found that the grade is started from a single pattern which is utilized for all sizes and when once made, is the basis for (he making of block patterns. In this volume, the author has aimed to put the art of using block patterns as plainly as possible to the student, and it is his firm belief that anyone who is conversant with cutting can easily follow the lessons given herein. In order to facilitate the work of the man who is compelled to employ this method of cutting, a most complete course of instructions in the making of alterations is added. These alterations have all been practically tested and are the result of twenty-five years of actual practice during which period not the least time was given lo the careful study of the necessities and requirements of altering garments encountered daily under various conditions. Leather is very likely the first material used by humans for sewing. How difficult can it be to sew leather? At a first glance – very difficult, or at least that’s what I thought before actually doing it. But after I finished my first serious project I realized that sewing leather is not more complicated than sewing denim for example. On the contrary, because leather doesn’t fray, doesn’t need washing, pressing, doesn’t shrink etc. I made quite a few projects with leather, made some mistakes during the process and discovered so much by trial and error that now I can share with you some tips on how to sew leather.

Thanks for all your kind words about my new Butterick patterns! Your lovely comments make my day; I hope you all know that. I wanted to clarify something about the straps on B5882. As I mentioned briefly in my last post, I had intended for the straps to twist when worn. And, as it turns out, the folks at Butterick (while genius) are not mind readers. Who knew?! So I wanted to show you pictures of the dress as I made and styled it, so you can make your choice when sewing the pattern. Here's a picture I took in my sewing room, right after I finished the dress. See how the strap is turned down underneath the bust, and then twists at the side of the bust? This is how I draped the original pattern, so it helps eliminate any rippling of the strap. I feel like an idiot for not giving Butterick more detailed notes on the placement of the strap. Live and learn, right? Happily, the dress still looks fantastic on the model and I love everything they did with the photo shoot. Oh! And here's the dress on display at the Craft and Hobby Association in Anaheim last month! This shows the dress without a crinoline, a more subtle look that works well also. Several of you asked about how to do an FBA on this pattern, so I'll be sure to write about that soon. Thanks again for all of your support! It means the world to me. P.S. Several of you mentioned waiting for a sale to purchase the pattern, and you're in luck! Patterns are currently $1.88 on the Butterick site. The sale ends this Thursday, February 28th.

There were some fabrics leftover from the demo quilt and I wanted to include Flip and Sew for my class on Saturday. Using ONLY leftover strips and leftover batting. Quilted center, 36x43" ready for adding QAYG borders. I had some strips of batting which I connected by using this Heat Press tape and a teflon sheet. Worked great! This made a large piece of batting about 36x44" and I then used a large ruler to divide the batting into three parts. I found a yard of fabric in my stash that was used for the backing. Then I got out my strip collection to add to the leftovers from the demo quilt. The beginning two strips lined up with the edges of section #1. I used a walking foot to sew them and quilt them down simultaneously. Each strip is added to the previous ones and pressing as I go. The whole quilt took about three hours total. I can then add borders to enlarge this finished start.
