One side of the shawl features a lace pattern with bobbles and later on small cables, while the other side is knitted in comforting and meditative garter stitch, which makes the shawl squishy and warm. “Nupullaan” is a Finnish word describing a flower just about to bloom. The size of the shawl is easily modified. Just keep adding more rows for a bigger version. You can also finish the shawl by adding tassels to the corners. Description Info Shown In This is a PDF knitting pattern This lace shawl features two skeins of Undercover Otter’s Eventide, a fingering weight yarn with a smooth blend of merino, yak, and silk. Yarn over eyelets decorate the semi-circular shape with a lightning bolt motif. I-cord edges frame the wingspan and a garter stitch border finishes the graphic design with sharp short row points. Each Eventide colorway is dyed on a neutral heathered base, which gives the yarn rich depth and dimension. The silk fibers create a super flowy fabric and it also soaks up the dye, producing bold saturated colorways. Complete this statement shawl with a tassel on each wingtip. All rights reserved. This is the fifth design in the Celtic Cable Shawls collection. The construction of this lace-weight shawl is rather complex and unusual. The shawl begins with the centre square, worked outwards in the round. Then, two of the edges around the square are filled in with short rows, and the body is worked in stocking stitch, finished with lace ribbing. After this, the other two edges of the square are filled in and rest of the shawl is worked exactly as the other side.Measurements Width: 17"/(43 cm) Length: 55"/(140 cm)Skills required include: * Working outwards from a small diameter in the round * Complex closed-loop cables (tutorial link in pattern) * Provisional cast-on (tutorial link in pattern) * Some wrong-side cabling * Short rows * Basic lace

I associate "ruching" with a trim of gathered ruffles or pleats. Here the term seems to be used simply as an alternative for "edging." The 4-row repeat produces a medium-wide garter stitch border with two rows of ladder eyelets running horizontally along the top and two staggered rows of large eyelets in the saw-tooth lower edge. Four stitches are adding in the first row and are maintained in the stitch count until they are bound off in the last row. You can download the full-size chart, verbal instructions and notes here. Up next: I have absolutely no idea. Making sense of this Victorian knitter's patterns is proving to be considerably more frustrating than those of the previous one. My apologies for the long delays in between posts.
