Italian school house doors Note to Design Freakers: Anyone interested in a fabulous Online Painting Techniques Course for Interiors, Art and Furniture. Check out the link/Image below. I have this dream that I would one day have a loft and then put old Italian exteriors doors in the interior of the space. I would silver or gold leaf them and they would be brilliant, and of course hip beyond belief. here's a detail shot, you can see a little of the brown antiquing This summer while working painting a villa I got my doors, because the clients had to change the front door while putting in an alarm system. They are just gorgeous I wish I could put my finger on the photos. The doors are huge, with panels carved in, heavy and wood and they even have the letter slot that says "lettere" on it. They are now in storage. The day I got them, I went to my favorite cafe where a girlfriend works and I told her my dream and I joked I don't have the loft but I have the doors. I love what an improvement painting hardware can be Then autumn rolled around and I started working on another villa, that was once a school house up in the hills of Assisi. These clients were very cool, Italian - Canadians who work in film, and the school house already had a loft built into it, plus the exterior doors inside, man isn't life weird that way. So instead of becoming very jealous I just decided that I would get them to do the Silver Leaf Doors. We ended up doing the inner front doors, which is not the pretty set of doors that goes to the loft room, yet they are a focal point for the house and entrance. the before shot Here is a before shot. I liked the animal scratches it gives it a past For this process, first I painted it gray so if it wears off in time it will just look aged. Then I silver leafed the door. Then I put a dry brush of raw umber (dark brown) oil paint over the whole thing to tone it down and antique it. I left all the imperfections and even animal scratching in the wood because I liked the texture. I painted all the hardware with metal paint in an industrial silver. What do you think? I just love it. The clients love it too, they actually in the spring want me to change the panels to copper leaf to go more with the brick floor. Maybe I should even do the oil paint dry brush effect in a brick-red color over the copper. I always have the main goal to make the clients happy, and sometimes I get to test some of my dreams in the meantime. so pretty Natalie Check out these parties I'm linking to: Between Naps On The Porch Mod Vintage Life French Country Cottage Redoux Interiors Savvy Southern Style

Aged silver leaf on a cabinet is a beautiful look. Want to get the look without the hassle? Our lovely cabinet was not so lovely to begin with, take a look at its transformation. This wood cabinet is an old stereo cabinet. The front panels had cracked decorative panels that we removed. Next step was using Annie Sloan's wonderful paint to cover. We used Graphite Chalk Paint for the base to our silver leaf effect. After the paint dried we applied a coat of Artisan Enhancements Leaf and Foil sizing. Its like a watery glue that you paint on with a brush. Colin and I painted the sizing on together working from either ends of the cabinets. We were undecided about the panels so we did not apply the sizing inside the paneled area at first. Later we changed our minds and did size that area as well. Wait for the sizing to dry to tacky status, about 45 minutes. Then start with a sheet of foil that will cover an area. Foil is thin and on a roll (you can see it on the floor next to me). It comes in silver, champagne and gold. Where ever you paint the sizing on is where the foil will stick. I roll off about 18" and then stick it matte side to the sized area. Then rub it on with a scrub brush or a dried sea sponge to make good contact before you peel the sheet of foil back. The metallic foil will stick to the cabinet and the sheet will come off almost transparent, as you can see above. This is soooo easy and fast! Foil doesn't flake like silver leaf and you can do large sections at a time, making this project go very quickly indeed! Rubbing it on, peeling it off~this is the look. You will see the brush strokes of the sizing and it creates a very natural leafed effect. After a bit of debate, Colin went ahead and foiled the interiors of the panels. Then he selected a stencil and used Graphite Chalk Paint to go over the silver. Look at how amazing this looks! Our stencil pattern was Royal Design Studios Small Eastern Lattice. You can see how it looks after Colin finished the first door, After it was all finished he protected it with Artisan Enhancements Clear Top Coat. We use this over special finishes, like foil for a clear protective coat. You can finish it with Annie Sloan's clear soft wax but it will dull down the foil. Finished silver leaf effect cabinet! Finished in one day! Hooray! To see how easy it is to apply foil, watch the quick short video below.
