Teaching The Cay by Theodore Taylor is one of my favorite units because we get to incorporate research and life skills into the curriculum. Doing so breeds life-long skills, which are highly valued by future employers and in college. Teaching students how to conduct research early on will be of great benefit to your students once they reach high school, college, and their future careers. Your students are sure to enjoy this project, which combines Reading, English, Science, and Social Studies skills to foster a higher understanding of what Timothy and Phillip, the main characters in the novel, went through just to survive. This unit is comprehensive and coincides with Taylor's beloved book but with a twist as to the setting.
